Shenandoah County, known previously as Dunmore, was formed in 1772. The Senedo Indians lived north of New Market and the name is derived from that tribe. To the west of Shenandoah County is the Great North Mountain, to the east is Massanutten Mountain. Cedar Creek is the northern boundary and the southern boundary abuts Rockingham County.

Counties that surround Shenandoah County: Frederick, Page, Rockingham, Warren and Hardy County, WV
