Descendants of Fernando Delphia (Cudge) Sparkman

Generation No. 1

FERNANDO (Cudge) was born Oct 1856 in Camptown, Alachua Co., FL, to Lewis William Sparkrman and Hester Palmer. He was the grandson of Florida Pioneer William S. Sparkman, Jr. Cudge died 28 Oct 1928 in Ocala, Marion Co., FL. He married (1) ELIZABETH MEDDOWS 27 Jun 1876 in Marion County, FL. There are no known children of the union of Elizabeth and Cudge. He then married (2) EMMA CATHERINE JORDAN 19 Nov 1878 in Marion County, FL. She was born 1859 in Lake City, Columbia Co., FL, and died 1927 in Lake City, Columbia Co., FL.

Cudge and Emma are buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Southern Marion Co., FL. Cedar Grove Cemetery is approximately 1 mile north of the Withlacoochee River off State Road 200 and down a dirt road to the east of 200 about 1 1/2 miles. A good portion of Cudge's family is buried there. (see Cedar Grove Cemetery Transcription).

From stories I have heard from my mother, Margaret Garrett Hammock Smith (granddaughter of Houston Christopher Columbus Sparkman, daughter of Ella Alverda Sparkman Garrett), great niece of Cudge, and her brothers, their Uncle Cudge was quite a character. He reportedly had some rather disreputable associates which is supported by a photograph of Cudge and Frank James on Cudge's front porch in Gaiter. Reputedly, Frank was hiding from the law after a robbery out west, and was there recovering from wounds received in his escape.

Cudge was also suspected, along with his father Lewis William Sparkman, of counterfeiting gold coins in the 1870's but was never caught at it., though it is reported , but not proven that his father served six months in a federal prison for that crime.

Cudge was also religious man and kept close ties to the Cedar Grove Methodist Church, of which he was a longtime member.

2. LOUIS FREDERICK was born 09 Jan 1882 in Dunnellon, Marion Co., FL, and died 01 Feb 1930 in Dunnellon, Marion Co., FL. He married SARAH ELIZABETH BERTINE HODGES. She was born 12 Feb 1903 in Viana, FL, and died 07 Aug 1992 in Holder, Citrus Co., FL. Both are interred at Cedar Grove.
