Marion County Cemeteries

Cedar Grove Methodist Church Cemetery

Church originally built before 1880 and used as a school house - Burned in 1935, rebuilt in 1936.

Location: On SW 147th Ln, 1 mile north of the Withlacoochee River on Hwy. 200 in Marion County, FL.

Submitted by Sallie Tinkham and used with her permission.

Notes: I had the pleasure of meeting with Sally at this church and cemetery on September 20, 1998 along with my mother, Margaret G. Smith (great great grandaughter of Lewis William and Hester Sparkman, great great neice of Cudge Sparkman, Sr.), Willie Sparkman Coleman, Katie Sparkman Pontero (granddaughters of Uncle Cudge), Sandra and Greg Haxton (great great great granddaughter of Lewis William and Hester Sparkman), and a few others for the purpose of fleshing out Sallie's knowledge of the Sparkman families for a book she was writing on the history of some of the defunct towns of Marion County, specifically Gaiter and Heidestville. My grandmother, Ella Alverda Sparkman Garrett was born in Heidtesville in 1889, she was the granddaughter of Lewis and Hester Sparkman, great granddaughter of William S. Sparkman and and Sarah Surry; great niece of Cudge Sparkman, Sr. Sallie has a wealth of knowledge of the area and a desire to share it with others. All the above named persons with the exception of Sallie Tinkham are descendants of Florida Pioneer William S. Sparkman, Jr who came to Florida before Florida was even a possession of the USA.
