Lafayette County, Florida was created December 23,1856 from part of Madison County, and included at the time what was both Lafayette and Dixie Counties. Lafayette County was named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French citizen who assisted the colonies during the Revolutionary War. The Suwannee River forms the entire eastern boundary of Lafayette County. The county seat was moved to Mayo from New Troy in 1893, and Mayo is currently Lafayette's only incorporated town. In 1921 the lower part of Lafayette County was carved off to create Dixie County.
The Lafayette County FLGenWeb will be under construction for a bit... Please be patient.
