Available! Gilchrist County FLGenWeb is available for adoption

Created in 1925 from the westernmost portion of Alachua County, Gilchrist is one of Florida's youngest counties. Trenton is the county seat. Alachua County was created in 1824. So if you have an Alachua County ancestor that dissapears from records about 1925, check Gilchrist County. And of course all records for Gilchrist County ancestors before 1925 are actually Alachua County records.

About USGenWeb ® and FLGenWeb

In 1996, a group of genealogy researchers in Kentucky figured out how to use the internet to make the information they had compiled available to anyone by designing a central portal that included a link to each Kentucky county. Other states soon joined in and in a matter of months, what began as a statewide project went national. The founders named it The USGenWeb ® Project and soon there was a web portal for all 50 states, with each state providing links to every county within its boundaries. The goal being to maintain as much genealogical and historical material in a FREE environment that the only requirement is access to the internet.

The FLGenWeb was born in late 1996, and had soon recruited coordinators for all 67 counties,as well as a portal to provide a link to each of those county websites. All FLGenWeb members are volunteers who have a desire to assist others in their search for their Florida Roots. Currently we have several counties available for adoption, including this one. To adopt this or any other available Florida County, please visit the FLGenWeb Volunteer Page

Being a County or State Coordinator is fun and rewarding. If you have an interest in the history of Florida and the genealogy of it's residents please consider it. If you think "there is no way I can do this" there are many people ready, willing and able to help you. It's not near as difficult as you might think. USGenWeb ® Counties that are up for adoption and need Volunteer Coordinators!! Are you able to do a basic website? Why not take the time to coordinate a county. It really doesn't take that much of your time and it will help others and also help you in your research. The one advantage that these counties have as opposed to the larger websites is that they are FREE and many times they contain information that the larger websites don't have. Think about it become a member of the USGenWeb ®. You'll be glad you did!
