Flagler County Military

Seminole Indian War

Florida experienced two significant Indian wars—the Seminole and Miccosukee resistance—during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

  • The Seminole Indian War (1817-1818) arose from tensions between white settlers and the Seminole people, who fiercely resisted through guerrilla tactics.
  • The Second Seminole War (1835-1842) saw intense battles and the leadership of figures like Osceola. Both conflicts resulted from the United States' westward expansion and its desire to control Florida's valuable lands.

Despite significant military efforts, the Seminole and Miccosukee people demonstrated remarkable resilience, preserving their culture and maintaining a presence in Florida to this day.

Many men came from Georgia to fight in these wars and then settled in Florida.

Civil War

During the Civil War, Flagler County was still part of Volusia and St. John's counties. Volusia County had formed in 1855 only seven year prior to the conflict. Prior to that Volusia was part of Mosquito County.
