The 1870 US census for town of Peshtigo lists the household of John W Hughart. Among the members are his wife, the former widow Lorinda Richardson McNabow and her two surviving sons from her first marriage, James and William McNabow; two children from John's previous marriage to the late Jane Carr, William and Jemima Hughart, and John and Lorinda's children Lorinda Jr., Franklin, John A. and Elizabeth, then 7 months old.

 In a fishing cottage along the shore of town of Peshtigo, the Hughart family, including 9 children and two adults, were trying to sleep on another very hot, extremely dry, smokey night. The youngest of the group was Levi Hughart, who had entered this struggling place just 23 days earlier. On that night, October 8, 1871 they would all be awakened by the bright orange glow and distant thunder of the Peshtigo Fire (please see: The Peshtigo Fire Home Page  The Peshtigo Fire Survivors Page). Faced with scorching, blinding, tornadic winds, showers of buring debris and choking, painful breathing , all 11 members of the household somehow managed to find a way to survive.

 As to stories about Frank A. Hughart as the Peshtigo fires, we know about one small incident concerning his family. This incident was recorded by my younger sister Dorothy Boughton (Hughart) Pope. She lived near our Dad, Waldo Myrick Hughart, in his later years, in the late 1980s. This is the short story he told. "When living in Wisconsin, the family survived the Peshtigo fire in the 1880s. Father Frank put his wife and children in a boat, probably with a number of others. He then buried some furniture and a few belongings in the sand in the front yard. The house was destroyed, but the furniture and the few belongings were saved." Our sister Elizabeth inherited a small rocking chair that had been part of the buried furniture.

The family stayed and rebuilt in town of Peshtigo, as farmers, by 1880. Two more children had been added to the family after the fire.

        He died on 01 Dec 1916 in Lake, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.

        She died before 1852. 
       John W HUGHART and UNKNOWN married.
        They had the following child:
               i.  Frank Ashbury HUGHHART
                    was born in Dec 1842 in Indiana, USA.
                    He married Dorothy TORGERSON in 1866. He died after 1900.

          daughter of David CARR and SAW-A-NO-QUE
         was born in 1840 in Peshtigo, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.
         She died on 30 Jun 1863 in Peshtigo, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.
         John W HUGHART and Jane CARR were married on 24 Sep 1852 in Green Bay, Brown, Wisconsin, USA.
         They had the following children:
               i.  William HUGHART
                    was born in Jun 1854 in Peshtigo, Oconto, Wisconsin, USA.
                    He died on 10 Feb 1922 in Lake, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.
               ii.  Jemima HUGHART
                    was born about 1856 in Peshtigo, Oconto, Wisconsin, USA.
                    She died on 21 Oct 1928 in Lake, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.

        daughter of Gaby Guy RICHARDSON and Rachel Olney NUTTING
        was born on 30 Mar 1832 in Shipton, Richmond, Quebec, Canada.
        (notes on LORINDA RICHARDSON: She first married WILLIAM MCNABOW 14 Sep 1853 in Cong, Shipton, Quebec, Canada, son of JAMES MCNABOW and OLIVIA DOYING. He was born 04 Mar 1829 in Canada, and died 05 May 1858 in Canada. Children of LORINDA RICHARDSON and WILLIAM MCNABOW are: JAMES ALLEN MCNABOW, b. 22 Jun 1854, Quebec, Canada; d. 07 Sep 1934, Lake, Marinette, Wisconsin; SARAH MCNABOW, b. 15 Jun 1856, Quebec, Canada; d. 03 May 1858; WILLIAM MCNABOW, b. 02 Feb 1857, Quebec, Canada; d. 06 Oct 1929, Lake, Marinette, Wisconsin. )
        She died in 1885 in Lake, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.

                    was born in Mar 1866 in Peshtigo, Oconto, Wisconsin, USA.
                    He married Nancy LAMPSON in 1896 in Lake, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.
                    He died on 14 Apr 1945 in Lake, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.
                iii. John A HUGHART
                    was born in 1868 in Peshtigo, Oconto, Wisconsin, USA.
                    He died after 1930 in Lake, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.
                iv. Elizabeth HUGHART
                    was born in Oct 1869 in Peshtigo, Oconto, Wisconsin, USA.
                    She died after 1880.
