Notes for Pe ton ne to qua  (Tonsea):

Marinette Eagle Star, P.5,
Tuesday, 25 Apr 1911:

"Mrs. O.F. Peck, one of the oldest pioneer residents of Marinette co., succumbed at the home of her son, Frank Peck of Grover, about 8 o'clock this morning, at the advanced age of 83 years and 11 months. She had enjoyed excellent health until a few months previous to her death. Her death, as nearly as can be learned, will mean the last of the native tribe living on the Peshtigo River. In 1827, Mrs. Peck, then Mrs. Tonocee, was born on the Peshtigo river near what is now the Airline road and the new bridge. She was reared with the natives and recalled of late years in detail stories to her children and grandchildren interesting accounts of their life and their first white neighbors, the builders of the Peshtigo mill. She was united in marriage to Oscar F. Peck, one of the prominent and wealthy residents of Marinette Co., formerly of the state of New York. The union was blest with six children. The son, Franklin B. Peck, who now owns the old farm in Grover and of whose family she was a member; Edward J. who died on October 12, 1895, and four daughters, Jane, later Mrs. Lyman Conant, now deceased; Julia, now Mrs. George Nickerson of the town of Peshtigo; and Mosa, Mrs. John McGregor. Mr. and Mrs. Peck resided at Lake Noquebay for seventeen years where Mr. Peck was employed by the Peshtigo Lumber Company; managing their large farm there. They then removed to Grover where a farm of 320 acres was purchased and cleared by Mr. Peck. On October 8, 1871, all of the farm buildings were destroyed by fire. The farm was then occupied, however, by George, a brother. Oscar Peck was a prominent and respected Grover resident, his death in 1899 being the cause of much regret among the residents of Marinette Co., as well as in the town of Grover, for which he had served as supervisor for eleven years. Mrs. Peck was a kind and affectionate old lady and her death, although far from untimely, will be mourned by her numerous friends and relatives. She has made her home with Mrs. and Mrs. Frank Peck for the last several years. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home in Grover, the Rev. L.A. ?? of the Methodist Church officiating.

Notes for Abraham Place:

History of Northern Wisconsin, Vol. II, page 600:

Abraham Place, farmer, Sec. 3, P.O. Peshtigo. Born Jan 20, 1818, in Chittenden County, Vermont; when about twelve years old, he came with his parents to Saint Lawrence County, New York. In 1837, he came to Green Bay, WI. In the spring of 1838, he removed to Peshtigo, where he has since lived. He first worked in Bailey's mill, where he continued about six years. Then he commenced trading with the Indians, and has followed this more or less ever since. He has acted in the capacity of agent for the Indians, in paying and otherwise attending to their wants. He owns over 800 acres of land, which he entered.  420 acres of this is his homestead farm. He is largely engaged in jobbing for the Peshtigo Company. He has been, for the past ten years, Treasurer of the School Board.

Abram (Abraham) Place

Centennial History of Michigan:

Next in this order comes Peshtigo. I am obliged to premise, that with the material received and at my comand little more than the merest outline of the interesting history of this place can be presented.
One of the first names we meet here is that of John LAWE, who traded successfully with the Indians. His widow, "Madam LAWE" afterward became, and is now the wife of Mr. Abraham PLACE. They long continued the Inian (sic) trade with good success.
Few of those who were here in early times will forget the old timber house four railes above Peshtigo Mills, so long know as "PLACEšs"
Here a hearty welcome, warm hearth, and bountiful table awaited their many friends. Sleigh rides to Peshtigo were by way of PLACEšs. The writer well remembers walking eight miles after school hours for a visit there, and back by the light of a lantern, braving the terrors even of the haunted hill, about half way from Menominee to Peshtigo.
Mrs. PLACE was of fine presence, and possessed more than ordinary force and intelligence. Her position and influence on the Peshtigo was some what similar to that of Marinette on the menominee (sic).  The house was supplied with game by Indian hunters; young and older Indians of both sexes were always at hand, rendering every needed service in a manner that reminded one of feudal times...

Richard Hall, The Centennial History of Oconto County, pulished in 1876 in the Oconto County Reporter:

One class of the early pioneers must not be forgotten. I refer to the Indian traders. John G. KITSON and John B. JACOBS on the Menominee, Abram PLACE and wife on the Peshtigo, and others of less note were conspicuous characters. Their trade in fur and peltries was a large one, and they were reputed men of much means. Their trade with the lumbermen especially in the article of buckskin, moccasins and mittens was considerable, boot and shoe packs being unknown. In a few cases there was conflict of interest between the traders and lumbermen. The navigation of the rivers was obstructed by the dams and booms of the lumbermen. For years, at Menominee, Dr. HALL furnished oxen, men and apparatus to "portage" the large mackinaw boats used by Mr. KITSON, by the dam. At length a lock was built which stood for a few years and made transport easy; then as the Indian trade declined it was no longer necessary to pay this tribute....

In October 1842 David JONES and Erastus BAILEY entered lots 3 and 7 Section 19, township 30 Range 23, embracing both sides of the river, where the mill dam was built and being nearly the same as the present mill site. About the same time, viz: in October 1842 JONES & BAILEY deeded one third interest to Jesse H. LEAVENWORTH for $4,000.

For some reason, the entries by JONES & BAILEY were cancelled in June 1844. In Sept. of the same year, PLACE re-entered the west side of the river, that is lot 3. The east side was not re-entered until 1848 by Alex STOWE. At this time the property was about the same as above described. Lumber was then and for years afterward, rafted and run down the river and out to vessels upon the anchorage, a distance then rated at sixteen miles.
Supplies were loaded in scows or boats at the mouth of the river and drawn in wagons or sleighs to the mill a distance called eight miles. There was no road from Peshtigo mills to either of the other principal rivers. The only road between the Peshtigo and Menomonee was from PLACEšs to CHAPPENšs trading post and then down the Menominee about four miles to the mills. This was a pretty good road in the winter; by careful driving a cutter could get through without more than two upsetts. The young people maintained that it was a good road.

Notes for Sarah Kenyon:

Marinette Eagle Star,
Saturday, 23 Mar 1889:

Mrs. Sarah Ann Place, wife of Mr. Job Place, of the Lower Bush, Peshtigo, departed this life on Wednesday, March 13th, 1889, aged 55 years and two months. Her maiden name was Sarah Ann Kenyon; she was born on the 27th of December, 1838, at Hindsburg, Chittendon Co., Vermont. She was united in the bonds of holy matrimony to Job Place on July 17, 1856 at Burlington, Vt. The newly married couple started west the following month of the same year (August) 1856, and settled in Peshtigo, where they have resided, enjoying the comforts of Christian marriage,  until the time of Mrs. Place's death. To them were born one daughter and four sons, who survive but one son.  She always had good health until August 4th, 1885, when she received a shock of paralysis from which she seemingly recovered, and apparently enjoyed good health until the 27th of last month (Feb. 17th, 1889), when another shock of paralysis took hold of her, from which she never recovered, and passed peacefully away, after many days of suffereing, on the 13th. For about two weeks the dear woman was unable to speak to her husband or children, which appeared to be a great grief unto her. She was one of the survivors of the Peshtigo fire, yet fresh in the memories of all survivors. She was ever a noble lady, a faithful, kind and loving wife, and affectionate mother. Many friends, crowding the spacious house to its utmost capacity, paid their last respects to the deceased. Rev. J. Churm officiated at the funeral, delivering an appropriate sermon from James 4:14 and the choir sang 399, 393 and 184 from the Gospel hymns. "Another soul has passed to the great beyonds, another body has been laid to rest in the silent city of the dead."

Notes for Job E. Place:

Marinette Eagle Star,
Wednesday, 17 Sep 1919, p 6:

OLD RESIDENT DIES TUESDAY

Jobe Place,
Survivor of Peshtigo Fire,
Succumbs at early Morning Hour Yesterday.

Jobe E. Place, a pioneer resident of this vicinity, succumbed at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning at his home on Oconto Avenue, the cause of death being complications arising from old age. Mr. Place, who had been ailing for the past several months, had been confined to his bed for two months and his death was not unexpected. Decedent was 85 years of age; having been born in Chittenden, Vermont, July 25, 1834. He was a son of Lyman and Susan Jackson Place, who were born in Saint Lawrence County, New York. In October 1851, he came to Peshtigo, entering the employ of the Peshtigo Lumber company with whom he remained until 1857. During this year he purchased 160 acres of land in section N, Grover township, where he took up his residence. At this time it was all timber land and in the midst of a dense forest, without roads or any improvements, only a trail of wilderness. He labored diligently, cleared the land and erected a substantial residence. In the big Peshtigo Fire of 1871, the home, cattle and all his belongings were destroyed. He began his work anew and erected new buildings and worked his 160-acre farm to a good state of cultivation. Mr. Place has seen all the growth and development of Marinette County and is well and favorably known, always being kind and genial to his many friends. He was supervisor of Grover township for many years. He was a resident of Marinette County for sixty-nine years and removed to Peshtigo from Grover twelve years ago, when he retired from farm life.

More About Eugene James Place:

Marinette Eagle Star,
Friday Evening, September 27, 1907, Vol. 16:

A shocking accident occurred in the Peshtigo Lumber Company's mill this morning at fifteen minutes after seven o'clock, which caused the death of Eugene Place of this city. The unfortunate man was fireman in the mill during the night. He had blown the mill whistle at six o'clock in the morning and after this, and just before going home, he was forking some shavings into the hopper. After the shavings drop into the hopper there is a chain that carries them into the main conveyor. He was doing this as to steam up for the day's work, and from all appearances he lost his footing and fell head first into the hopper. About half of his body, head first, was crowded into a space of about four inches in width. Mr. Al Brownell, the day fireman, noticed that the chain in the conveyor had stopped, and thinking that a block of wood had gone in with the shavings, as such is often the case, went around to investigate and found Mr. Place with just his feet sticking out of the hopper. On arm was broken and his face and chest badly crushed. Death must have been instantaneous.

The mill shut down today on account of the sad event. The death blow comes with terrible severity to the wife and eight small children (this was corrected to six children in the next day's paper), the oldest being a girl of fiteen years, and the youngest a babe of three months. The remains of the unfortunate man were taken from the sawmill to Harper's undertaking rooms, where his body was prepared to be taken to his home on French street. Announcement of the burial will be given in a later issue of this paper.
