Rich County History
Rich County is located in the northeast corner of Utah, with the
southern half of Bear Lake extending into the county. The Fremont
Indians hunted the areas of Bear Lake and Bear river, later came the
Bannock and Shoshone. The land was rich with wild game, beaver and other
game, and became a favorite hunting grounds for fur traders.

Rich County Pioneers
The Oregon Trail over which thousands of immigrants to the Northwest
traveled cut through a corner of the county. The first white settler in
the area, Thomas L "Peg Leg" Smith, he operated a cattle business, trading
post, and horse exchange on the Bear River near present day Dingle, Idaho.
The Homestead Act of 1862 brought the settlements of Round Valley (1863);
Kennedyville [Garden City] and Laketown (1864); Woodruff (1865); Randolph
(1870); and Argyle (1875).
