TOM BEAN - Nyal Gean Yowell was born May 4, 1922 in Grayson County to Robert E. Yowell and Mary Elizabeth Hopper. He married Virginia Brown on October 7, 1961 at Carrollton. He died Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison at the age of 88.
Nyal was a retired farmer. He served his nation during World War II in the U.S. Army. He served in Italy, North Africa and Germany. While in Germany he was in a German POW camp for seven months. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Good Conduct medals along with several others. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal. After returning home from the war he returned to the farm and later worked in Fort Worth on the B-36 Peacemaker Bomber along with his brother Grady.
He returned back to farming. He then studied carpentry and cabinet making in Whitewright under the G.I. Bill. He built many houses in Tom Bean, Howe, Sherman and the surrounding areas. He was a great perfectionist in making sure a building or whatever he was working on was as close to perfect as it could be. He and his brothers also had a band and played music all around the area. He played guitar and also mandolin.
He is survived by son, Gary Yowell of Tom Bean; brother, James Yowell and wife Joyce of Tom Bean; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 34 years, Virginia; brothers, Claude, T.J., Robert and Grady; and his sister Gladys.
Funeral services will be held 11a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2010 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, Tom Bean. Officiating the service will be Mr. A. C. Quinn. Burial will follow at Vittitoe Cemetery in Grayson County. Pallbearers will be Greg Counts, Chris Counts, Bill Yowell, David Yowell, Jimmy Yowell, and Preston Yowell.
The family will receive friends during a visitation from 3 -5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, Tom Bean.
Arrangements are with Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, Whitewright.
