Vittitoe Cemetery Historical Marker

Vittitoe Cemetery is located on Andy Thomas Road, 1 mile south of State Highway 11 between Whitewright and Tom Bean Texas.  Originally a private burial ground for the family of Samuel and Ellen Vittitoe, it was established as a public burial ground in April 1885 with a deed dated April 25, 1885 to the Trustees of the grave yard : Quincy Vittitoe, D.J. Lollad and James Bray.

The earliest grave is thought to be Frank Vittitoe, son of Samuel and Ellen who died before 1860.  There are five undated marble markers in the Vittitoe family plot in section C.  Samuel died in 1862 and his grave marker is to the south of Frank's.  Ellen is buried to the north of Frank.  South of Samuel is the marker for BLACK MAMMIE, a beloved former slave who remained with the family after the Civil War.  North and east of these four markers is another identical marble slab, which simply says, "Our Baby".

Vittitoe Cemetery became a legal public burial ground with a deed dated April 25, 1885 to the Trustees of the graceyard: Quincy Vittitoe, D.J. Lollad and James Bray. The land came from the John W. Turner surrounding area.  Vittitoe Cemetery was originally a private burial ground for the family of Samuel and Ellen Vittitoe.  The grave of Frank Vittitoe, son of Samuel and Ellen, is believed to be the first burial.  The cemetery has had expansions in 1924, 1960, and 1978.

There are 16 Confederate Veterans and 2 Union Veterans of the Civil War buried in Vittitoe Cemetery and 56 documented WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam Veterans also buried here.   Vittitoe Cemetery received an Historical Marker in 1985.

Vittitoe Cemetery is maintained by the Vittitoe Cemetery Board of Directors, who also administer the Perpetual Care Trust Fund which was Chartered by the State of Texas in 1978.  The interest from this fund, plus donations from individuals who are interested in maintaining this Historic Cemetery, cover the cost of year round care.
