PIONEER CITIZEN DEAD
Joe Bennett Roberts, one of the early settlers of this county, and for more than fifty years one of the most substantial and best citizens of the county, passed away Wednesday night, September 19th at 7 p.m. at the home of his son, Randolph Roberts., at 719 Grand avenue, Sherman, after an illness of about one week, though he had been in ill health for the past sixteen months.
Mr. Roberts is survived by four sons and a daughter, all of whom were present at his bedside when the end came, the five children being E.J. Roberts of this city, Palo A. Roberts of Atoka, Oklahoma, Barlow Roberts, Randolph Roberts and Mrs. John Abernathy all residing in Sherman.
Deceased moved to Grayson county in 1867, and settled in Kentuckytown in this county, where he has made his home ever since.  His wife, Florentha Roberts, died just thirty years to a day, and almost to the hour, before he followed at the old farm home at Kentuckytown, and he was laid by her side Thursday afternoon, September 20th.
Deceased was born in Jackson county, Tennessee, in 1839, being in his eightieth year at the time of his death. Joe B. Roberts, or "Uncle Joe" as he was lovingly called by a host of friends, was a man of strong convictions, with the courage to always speak them, and men knew at all times just where he stood in regard to men and measures.  He served through the Confederate army, and like all the old true Southerners, he was neither afraid to assert, nor to fight for his convictions.  His service during the war was under General Morgan, and he was at the time of his death a member of the Mildred Lee Camp of Sherman.  He was a member of the Christian Church, which he joined at an early age.
Funeral services were held at Kentuckytown at 3:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. George F. Cuthrell, pastor of the Central Christian church of Sherman.  Interment was in the cemetery nearby.
The active pall bearers were G.P. Webb, E.J. Smith, T.W. Roberts, Dero Austin, H.H. Cummins, B.F. Gafford.  The honorary pallbearers were W.H. Lankford, M.H. Andrews, Silas Hare, B.L. Jones, J.Q. Adamson, Chas. Ritenour, J.S. Brown, T.N. Parrish, F.E. Vittitoe, J.C. Skaggs, G.W. Pope, Guy Hamilton, Joe Harris, Robt. Chumbley, Henry Everheart, W.H. Phillips, John Chumbley, Chas. Gudgee, John Gant, W.O. Fain. -- Sherman Courier
