Capt. J.P. Hamilton
The sudden death of Capt. James P. Hamilton, which occurred at an early hour Tuesday morning at the home of his nephew, Guy Hamilton, in this city, came as a surprise and shock to his many friends and acquaintances throughout this section, among whom he has moved for the past forty years.
Capt. Hamilton had been sick for several months, but recently had gotten on his feet sufficiently to encourage him to make a visit to his kinspeople at Trenton.  Returning from Trenton about the first of September, his waning strength and vitality became daily more noticeable, and he was confined to his bed most of the time.  On the evening preceding his death, however, he was able to sit up, and talked cheerfully to friends who passed the home.  When his nephew went to his room about six o'clock Tuesday morning, there was no response to his efforts to arouse him, and a physician was called, who stated that he had been dead about an hour, due to heart failure.  The body lay in the natural repose of sleep.
James Patterson Hamilton was born at Abbeyville, S.C., April 5, 1830.  At an early age in life he moved with his parents to Mississippi, where he was reared to manhood and enlisted in the Confederate army from that state.  After the war he came with relatives to Texas, settling near old Kentuckytown, and for many years made his home with T.A. Hamilton, and after that pioneer citizen passed behind the somber curtain of death, he came to Whitewright and took up his residence with his nephew, Guy Hamilton.  He was never married, but, nevertheless, was a fixture in this community and filled a valuable place in its citizenship.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. W.J. Epting, after which the body was conveyed to Vittitoe cemetery for interment.

Mrs. W.C. Holmes, of Trenton, was here Wednesday to attend the funeral of her brother, Capt. J.P. Hamilton.  Among other out-of-town people here to attend the obsequies were Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Melton and Mr. and Mrs. Horace Melton of Leonard; J.H. Melton of Sherman; Mr. and Mrs. Gus Holmes and Mrs. Pearl Connelly and others of Trenton.
