POTTSBORO – Don Lewis Herd lost his courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's disease on Monday, June 25, 2012 at the age of 69, at his home.
The family will be at Bratcher Funeral Home for visitation from 6 -7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2012.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Bratcher Funeral Home Chapel.  Greg Knight, Minister of Pottsboro Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 610 U.S. Highway. 69, Denison, TX 75020.
Pallbearers will be Robert Clements, Robert Powlison, Gary Watkins, Jack Little, Duane Williams and Horace Groff.
Don was born on June 10, 1943 in Denison, Texas to Lewis and Opal Herd. He married Audrey Foster on June 15, 1965 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Denison.
He was a 1961 graduate of Denison High School, studied architecture at Draughton's Business College in Dallas, attended Grayson College studying business law and real estate. He was a general contractor most of his life, building beautiful homes and remodeling. He was a partner in ice plants, installed swimming pools and spas and was an insurance adjuster. After semi-retirement, he went to work at the Prothro Retreat Center, along with his wife Audrey and formed loving relationships with his dear friend and boss Cliff Dyer and all of his co-workers. Don was a very talented artist, loved baseball, fishing, raising bluebirds and nature in general.
Anyone who knew Don enjoyed his witty sense of humor, and his laughter was contagious. He lived a life of caring, giving his all and deep love for his family.
Don is survived by his wife, Audrey; father, Lewis Herd; sister Margaret Atnip and husband T. J. of Denison; sons, LCPL Justin Herd of Camp Lejeune, N.C., Dale and Clay Herd of Denison; brother-in-law, Bob Foster of Denison; niece, Denise Selover of Dallas; nephews, Larry of Rowlett, David Atnip of Idabell, Okla., Cory Foster of Denison, and their extended families. Don has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother Opal Herd and his grandparents.
