The society was organized in 1965 by a group of people who wanted to collect and publish the birth, marriage, death, burial and earliest land records of Wayne County. By doing so, interest in researching ones family grew and a genealogy group was formed under a section of the Wayne County Historical Society. In May 1978, the Wayne County Genealogical Society, section of the Wayne County Historical Scoety was granted a Charter as a Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. In 1996, the members voted to form The Wayne County Genealogical Society, a Chapter of OGS, as an independent group from the Historical Society.

The society promotes genealogy study, research and education. To publish genealogical material and support the objectives of the OGS. Encourgement in First Families of Ohio (FFO) and Pioneer Families of Wayne County.

The Wayne County Genealogical Society does not have our own library. When visiting the county for genealogy research, a good plce to start is the Wayne County Public Library in Wooster, OH. The Genealogy and Local History Department has some 5,880 volumes, 3,900 I.G.I. fiche, 1,600 Probate fiche and more than 4,200 reels of microfilm. Over 870 published histories and 2,800 family papers have been donated by researchers. Staff members will help you by phone at (330) 262-0916 ext. 7139.

Newsletter

A newsletter, "Wayne Ancestors", is published quarterly by The Wayne County Genealogical Society. Only one newsletter will be sent to the same address. Queries for the newsletter are welcome and printed free of charge for members. If you are not a member, plese enclose $5 with your request. Any items you may have on Wayne County or its families are requested for publishing in the newsletter including old Bible records. Xerox copies, including title page, are preferred.
