Apprenticeship Indentures For Chagrin/Willoughby Township 1815-1846

These indentures were very similar. The first one is a transcription, the others are abstracts. The living arrangements were basically the same for everyone here. "So much arithmetick as will include the single rule of three" was basically putting a story problem into an equation to solve.

The original record book First Records of Chagrin Township Copied by William Phillips T. Clerk 1819 from the First Records of the Township of Chagrin April 3rrd 1815. It is held at Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland. The pages are not numbered, and the entries are not necessarily in chronological order. These entries are presented in the order they appeared in the original book. There is little punctuation, and spelling of names is inconsistent. Submitted by Cynthia Turk

This indenture made this 20th day of Dec. AD. 1837 between Earl Smith of Willoughby Township County of Cuyahoga & State of Ohio and Joyce Chapman Smith his son aged sixteen years on the day of the date of these presents of the one part & Ezra Tuttle of the Town of Willoughby County & State aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that the said Joyce C. Smith voluntarily & with the approbation of the said Earl Smith his Father has put placed & bound himself & by these presents, doth put place & bind himself an apprentice unto the said Ezra Tuttle to be instructed in the art mistery trade & occupation of making Saddles & harness &c. which if said Ezra Tuttle now uses & to live with & serve him as an apprentice from the day of the date thereof untill the said Joyce Chapman Smith shall arrive at and be of the age of twenty one years which will happen on the 21th day of December A. D. 1842 (if the said Joyce Chapman Smith so long lives.) During all of which term of five years the said Earl Smith & Joyce C. Smith do covenant and agree to & with the said Ezra Tuttle that the said Joyce Chapman Smith as an apprentice shall well & faithfully serve the said Ezra Tuttle in all such lawful business as the said Joyce Chapman Smith shall be put unto by his said master according to the best of his abilities and honestly and obediently behave himself towards the said Ezra Tuttle and honestly and orderly towards the family of the said Ezra Tuttle & the said Ezra Tuttle on his part, doth covenant & agree to & with the said Father & son respective & jointly to teach & instruct the said Joyce C Smith or otherwise cause him to be well instructed & taught in the art trade mistory and occupation of a saddler & harness maker after the best manner he can.

And that he the said Tuttle will provide for and allow to the said Joyce Chapman Smith meal drink washing lodging & apparel, and all the necessaries proper & suitable for such an apprentice during the time of his apprenticeship and shall teach and instruct him the apprentice or cause him to be taught and instructed to read & write and so much within [them] as will include the single rule of three & shall give him the said apprentice three months schooling at a common school in the year of 1838 and two months schooling as aforesaid in the year of 1839 and the same in the year of 1840 & at the expiration of said term to give to the said Joyce Chapman Smith five dollars in cash and five dollars worth of saddlers tools also a new bible and at least two suits of common wearing apparrel. It is understood & agreed by the parties that one suit of wearing apparrel as above stipulated is to be a fine suit, suitable to wear to meeting on the sabbath, in witness whereof the said justices have hereunto set their hands & seals the day and year first above written

At expiration to receive $5.00 cash & $5.00 worth of saddle tools, at least 2 suits of common wearing apparel, one to be fine to wear to meeting on the sabbath.

At expiration to receive new bible, 2 suits of wearing apparel, a horse worth $50.00 & $100.00 cash

Atwell Salisbury & Alexander Salisbury with Ezra Tuttle Jr. - Agreed for consideration of a joint note of hand of $60.00 payable 1st Jan next to E. Tuttle. Cancels agreement of 30 Aug 1834.
