In the year 1813 a direct tax, after which the 1862 tax bill was later modeled, was levied to raise the funds for prosecuting the War of 1812. The following is a return of Internal Duties (except those on household furniture, watches, and stamps) paid to the United States by each person of the 9th Collection District during the year 1816. It contains the names of many of the early settlers of northeastern Ohio. An asterisk (*) indicates resident found in the 1814 Geauga County tax list (which includes the area of Lake County after 1840 [except Willoughby])
