Salomonson, Irene ~ Wednesday, February 23, 2000. Irene Salomonson, 78, died on Feb. 18 at her home in Wellington. She was born on July 5, 1921, in Detroit, Mich., to Joseph and Edna Fick Slater. She and Robert Salomonson were married in Napoleon, Ohio, on Sept. 25, 1940. Mrs. Salomonson was a homemaker and had resided in Wellington for eight years, coming from Little Rock, Calif. She enjoyed playing cards and going to the casinos, and she loved to travel. She was predeceased by her parents, two sons and three sisters. Surviving are her husband Robert Salomonson of Wellington; son Bruce Salomonson of Porterville, Calif.; daughter Diana Ludlow of Wellington; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Sarasola, Marie ~ Saturday, June 17, 2000. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church for Marie Sarasola of Gardnerville, who died June 15. She was 96. The rosary will be recited at the church at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Interment will be at Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City at 9 a.m. Monday, followed by the funeral at St. Gall's in Gardnerville.

Sarasola, Marie ~ Wednesday, June 21, 2000. Marie Sarasola of Gardnerville died June 15 at her residence. She was 96. Mrs. Sarasola was born Jan. 12, 1904, in Esterencuby, France, to Jean and Marianne Urruty Arrossagaray. She was a resident of Gardnerville for 73 years, coming from France She was preceded in death by her husband, Pierre who died in June 1975, and a son, Robert, who passed away May 19, 1994. Mrs. Sarasola was an avid gardener and tended a large vegetable garden well into her 80s. She enjoyed crocheting and was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville. Mrs. Sarasola is survived by daughters Marian Barrett of Gardnerville and Barbara Indiano of Minden; a sister in France; grandchildren Gary Indiano of Reno, Janelle Wilcks, JoAnn Thaler, Cathy Colquhoun and Bob Barrett of Minden; Paul Barrett and Kelly Sarasola of Gardnerville and Julie Beasley of Vancouver, Wash.; great-grandchildren Amber Arnold of Las Vegas, Ryan Indiano of Reno, Matt and Kaycee Wilcks, Jeff Zinn, Angie and Nicole Colquhoun of Minden, Heather and Jennifer Barrett and Melody and Sean Thaler of Gardnerville. A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated on Monday with Father Bill Nadeau as celebrant. Interment was in the Walton's Wall of Memories in Carson City.

Schacht, Emma ~ Wednesday, December 1, 1999. Genoa naive Emma M. Schacht, 96, of Oxnard, Calif., formerly of Hawthorne, Nev., died on Nov. 27 at Maywood Health Care Center in Oxnard.Funeral services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hawthorne on Friday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m., with Deacon Perry Harding officiating. Organist will be Marlena Bunch and pallbearers will be grandsons Craig Stevens, Gary Stevens, William "Bill" Schacht, Eric Schacht, Greg Bent and Larry Duch and grandson-in-law Joe Neuberger. Mrs. Schacht was born in Genoa on Oct. 3, 1903, to Diedrich and Marie Wehrman Winkelman. She grew up in Genoa and Gardnerville and attended secretarial school in Berkeley, Calif. On Nov. 27, 1924, she and William C. Schacht were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gardnerville. They bought a small ranch which they continued to farm until 1937, when they moved into the town of Gardnerville. They lived there until 1942, when they moved to Babbit, Nev., to work in the Naval Ammunition depot. After the Naval base reduced its force, they moved to Hawthorne, where Mrs. Schacht worked for Kellison's Variety Store for a number of years. She was one of the founders and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Hawthorne. In 1995, she moved to Thousand Oaks, Calif., to be close to family members, and later to Oxnard. Mrs. Schacht was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Schacht; daughter Margaret Duch-Haden; daughter-in-law, Patricia Schacht; sons-in-law, Stanley Duch and Raymond Stevens; brothers Harry and Ewald Winkelman; and many nieces and nephews. Surviving are her son, Stanley Schacht of Winnemucca; daughters Anita Stevens of Oxnard and Loretta Bent of Thousand Oaks; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Schaffer, Louis ~ Friday, September 1, 2000. A memorial service for Louis Schaffer, 78, of Genoa, will be held tomorrow, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. at the Genoa Community Church in Genoa. Mr. Schaffer died on Aug. 27 in Reno. He was born on May 27, 1922, in Manhattan, Mont., to John and Edna Brown Schaffer. He was a colonel and pilot in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the 509th Composite Group, having served during World War II and in Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal and a Bronze Star and three times received the Legion of Merit. Mr. Schaffer earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago and a master's degree from George Washington University. On retirement from the Air Force, after 30 years of service, he taught at the University of Cincinnati while earning a doctor's degree. He moved to Genoa in 1972, where he had a consulting business, working with the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Mines and several other state agencies. From 1986 to 1996, he volunteered with the Laubach Literacy Action, training over 2,000 tutors in Nevada. He initiated reading and learning programs in 16 communities, four prisons, three workplaces, middle schools, colleges and reservations in Nevada and the surrounding California region. Mr. Schaffer was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Frankie Schaffer, and his son Gary Schaffer. He is survived by his daughters Brooke Woellner of Genoa and Sunny Bryant of Gardnerville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Schmidt, Robert ~ Saturday, March 4, 2000. A memorial service for Robert "Bob" Schmidt, 67, will be held today, March 4, at 1 p.m. at Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City. Mr. Schmidt died on March 1 at his Minden home. He was born on Sept. 14, 1932, in Petaluma, Calif., to Carl and Olga Schlumberger Schmidt. He was a resident of Genoa and Minden, coming from Burlingame, Calif., eight years ago when he retired from his own business of manufacturing and installing garage doors. Here he founded Douglas County Overhead Door Company. Mr. Schmidt was a member of the Genoa Lakes Men's Club and a former member of the California Club in San Francisco. He loved to golf and enjoyed all sports. He had been a professional baseball player with a Kansas organization. Mr. Schmidt's parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Sharon "Sheri" Schmidt of Minden; son Marke F. Fisse of Concord, Calif., and daughters Kathleen M. Schmidt of Burlingame, Susan A. Meroli of Vacaville, Calif., and Debra L. Fisse of Hollister, Calif.; and sisters Pearl Messer and Carol Powell, both of Carson City.

Schneider, Josie ~ Saturday, October 14, 2000 Josie Schneider, 79, died on Oct. 10 at Barton Skilled Nursing at Virginia Creek in Gardnerville. A Rosary will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville, followed by a reception. A private inurnment will be held at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden. Mrs. Schneider was born on Jan. 9, 1921, in Huntington, N.Y., to Pasquale and Susie Bruno Migardi. During World War II, she volunteer to visit the sick and wounded. On Aug. 13, 1949, she and Eugene F. Schneider were married at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Los Angeles. She resided in Yucaipa, Calif., before moving to Gardnerville 18 years ago. Mrs. Schneider had been a teacher's aide in Gardnerville and volunteered at the Douglas County Senior Center. She also had been an office manager for S & S Wholesale Grocery in Long Island, N.Y., for 10 years. She enjoyed painting, crocheting and reading. Predeceasing her were her parents and sister Mary. Surviving are her husband Eugene of Gardnerville; daughters Susan M. Hughes of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Gina C. Heverling of Walden, Colo.; sister Frances Cowie of Mentone, Calif.; and grandson Reid M. Hughes of Steamboat Springs.

Schreiber, Frederick Jr. ~ Wednesday, May 10, 2000. A memorial service for Frederick Walter Schreiber Jr., 29, who died on May 6, will be held on Friday, May 12, at 3 p.m. at Carson Valley Community Church, 3616 N. Sunridge, Carson City. Pastor Joel Berger will preside. Mr. Schreiber was born on Jan. 14, 1971, in Carson City to Frederick W. and Delores Overturf Schreiber Sr., and lived in Gardnerville his entire life. He served as a youth counselor at Camp May'mac in California for five years and at Hume Lake, also in California, for another five years. He was an AWANA leader at Carson Valley Community Church, where he was a member. Mr. Schreiber is survived by his mother Delores L. Schreiber of Gardnerville, and father Fred W. Schreiber Sr. of Carson City; grandfather Vernon VanMeir of Bakersfield, Calif.; and sister Desiree L. Constable of Gardnerville and brothers Frank W. Schreiber and John F. Schreiber, both of Carson City.

Schwartz, Walter ~ Saturday, June 24, 2000. A Celebration of Life for Walter Claus "Gus" Schwartz will be held on Monday, June 26, at 1 p.m. at Happy Homestead Cemetery, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Inurnment will follow. Mr. Schwartz died on June 20 at his Minden home at the age of 83. He was born on July 31, 1916, in Chester Township, Minn., to Jacob and Anna Klindworth Schwartz. He grew up during the depression and remembered many happy times with a loving family. He married his first wife, "Teddi" Harkness on Jan. 21, 1939, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On May 3, 1975, he and Marion Y. Cook were married in Carson City, and last month they celebrated their 25th anniversary. Mr. Schwartz was a Minden and Gardnerville resident for 15 years, coming from South Lake Tahoe. He was a building contractor in Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe for many years and was a member of the Building Contractors Association in Lake Tahoe. He was a private lender/investor until his death. Mr. Schwartz loved life and the outdoors. He possessed a strong work ethic, persistence, positive attitude and sense of humor. With hospice help, his wife and daughter Debee took loving care of him during his final days. Predeceasing Mr. Schwartz were his son Danny and brother Harold. Surviving are his wife Marion of Minden; son Peter M. Cook of Provo, Utah, and daughters Bunny J. Bassett of Fortuna, Calif., Deborah M. Klouzer of Big Bear Lake, Calif., and Pamela Y. Pullen, Mission Viego, Calif.; brother Norm Schwartz of Rochester, Minn., and sister Phyllis Schreiber of LaCrosse, Wisc.; grandchildren Dawn, Kathy, Melanie, Danny, Chris, Shelby, Kory, Kurtis, Casey and Chynna; and four great-grandchildren.

Scribner, Leonard ~ September 1, 1999. A graveside service for Leonard Scribner, 77, will be held tomorrow, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden. Mr. Scribner died on Aug. 29 at his home in Gardnerville. He was born on March 18, 1922, in Roy, Mo., to James and Eva Smith Scribner. He was a Teamster for 40 years and a Gardnerville resident for nine y ears, coming from Topaz Ranch Estates. Mr. Scribner enjoyed traveling and loved music. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Ramona L. Scribner, who died on Nov. 9, 1990, in Gardnerville, one brother and four sisters. Surviving are his sons James H. Scribner of Las Vegas and Ralph D. Scribner of June Lake, Calif.; brother Arthur Scribner of Hemet, Calif., and sisters Wanda Goin of Sacramento, Calif., and Golda Goin of Ava, Mo.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Sellers, Cheryl ~ November 13, 1999. Services for Cheryl Jeanne Darrough Sellers, 50, of Reno, will be held today, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. at Walton's Chapel in Sparks. Mrs. Sellers died on Nov. 7 at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno. She was born on March 14, 1949, in Ventura, Calif., to Robert and Jeanette Darrough. She spent her childhood in Ventura and lived in Conroe, Texas, Lake Tahoe and Camino, Calif., before moving to Northern Nevada in 1992. She was an artist and executive host in the gaming industry. Predeceasing Mrs. Sellers were her parents. Survivors include her husband, Roben of Reno; sons Daylen of Reno and Dustin of Ventura; grandsons Forrest and Colton; brothers Jim Darrough of Minden, Dale Darrough of Baton Rouge, La., and Robert Darrough of Stateline; two daughters-in-law; and nine nephews and nieces.

Shane, Renie ~ October 12, 1999. A graveside service was held for Renie Shane on Oct. 1 at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden. Mrs. Shane, a Gardnerville resident for the past 12 years, died on Sept. 28 at her residence. She is survived by her daughter Erin Nelson and her husband Jack and family of Gardnerville; son Mike Shane and family of Anadarko, Okla; sister Iris Williams of England; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Shannon, Donald ~ September 4, 1999. A memorial service for Donald Raymond Shannon, 74, was held yesterday, Sept. 3, at the First Baptist Church in Minden, where he was a member. Mr. Shannon died on Aug. 30 at the Veterans Medical Center. He was born in Hamburg, Mich., on Sept. 8, 1923, to Edwin and Jennie Sawyer Shannon. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps and took part in the Saipan invasion. He was a customer service representative in the hardware business and had lived in Bishop, Calif., before moving to Nevada 20 years ago. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers. Surviving are his wife Maile Shannon of Carson City; son Donald Shannon Jr. of Pt. Reyes Station, Calif., and daughter Kathleen Huber of Green River, Wyo.; sister Ventura Brown of Ann Arbor, Mich.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Shetler, Margaret ~ Wednesday, November 10, 1999. A funeral service for Margaret L. Shetler was held on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City. Inurnment was at Lone Mountain in Carson City. Mrs. Shetler died on Nov. 6 at the age of 69. She was born in Michigan on March 22, 1930, to George and Edith Richmond Husson. She was a bookkeeper in the banking business and had lived in Carson City for three years, coming from Coleville, Calif. Mrs. Shetler was Past Matron of Esther Chapter #3 Order of Eastern Star, an active member of Ammon-Ra Temple #56 Daughters of the Nile, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Antelope Valley Women's Club in Coleville and belonged to Beta Sigma Phi. Survivors include her son John L. Dodge of Michigan, daughters Karen Rosa of Michigan and Sharon Dodge of California; brother George Husson of California; and four grandchildren.

Shuda, Frank ~ Wednesday, June 28, 2000. A mass of Christian burial was held yesterday, June 27, for Frank E. Shuda, 88, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fallon, and interment followed at Eastside Memorial Park in Gardnerville. Mr. Shuda died on June 24 at Churchill Community Hospital. He was born Dec. 23, 1911, in Steven's Point, Wisc., to Alex and Margaret Petrick. He had been a Fallon resident for the past three years, coming from Elko. He was a retired machinist having worked for the Byron Jackson Oil Well Pump Company in Los Angeles for many years. He also worked as a driver for a produce company in Wisconsin. Mr. Shuda was preceded in death by his wife Catherine Shuda in August 1987. Surviving are his daughter Barbara Thornton of Fallon; sister Agnes Jakusz of Stevens Point; grandson John Allen of Anchorage, Alaska, and granddaughter Sandy Brandenburg of Reno; and five great-grandchildren.

Silva, Joaquin ~ February 16, 2000. Joaquin "Jack" Silva, 92, died on Feb. 6 at Carson Health Care in Carson City. He was born on June 16, 1907, in Joaquin Valley, Calif., to Joaquin E. and Marie Silva. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Silva was supervisor of nurseries for the park department in Oakland, Calif., for over 30 years and was lead man in maintenance at Harrah's Lake Tahoe for more than 10 years. He was a Minden resident for three years, coming from Clear Lake, Calif. Mr. Silva loved Bingo, reading and watching television. He also enjoyed fishing in Hope Valley, Calif. Preceding Mr. Silva in death were his wife Ruth, who died 16 years ago at Lake Tahoe, four brothers and three sisters. Surviving are his son Ras Silva of Minden and sisters Agnes Taylor and Clara Twoto, both of South San Francisco, Calif.

Simon, Phyllis ~ Wednesday, February 23, 2000. A memorial service for Phyllis Simon, 89, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 1:30 p.m. at FitzHenry's Funeral Home in Gardnerville. Mrs. Simon died on Feb. 12 in Northern California. She was born on Oct. 8, 1910, in Panama, Iowa, and spent many years in San Francisco, Oregon and Northern California. She was particularly interested in the welfare of children and served as a foster parent to many. She also played an active and formative role in the Cub Scouts in San Francisco. She and her husband Charley settled in Minden in 1971. Mrs. Simon loved swimming and was a regular at Carson Lanes. She was an accomplished seamstress and participated in handicraft. She kept a weather journal every day for nearly 40 years. Survivors include her husband Charley Simon; children Farajean Colbert and Joe Simon and his wife Sheryl; grandchildren, DJ, Rich and Mary Colbert, Bridget and Joey Simon and step-grandson Josh Hill; great-grandchildren Emma and Noah Colbert Baughman and Jonathan Cook; sister Jane Ebert; and niece Barbara Prochello.

Sims, Jenna ~ October 12, 1999. A funeral service was held for Jenna Alexis Sims on Oct. 12 at the Full Gospel Fellowship Church in Gardnerville. Burial will be in California. Jenna, the infant daughter of Eddie and Shelly Sims of Gardnerville, died on Oct. 8 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Reno. She is survived by her parents; her sister Jessica and brothers Justin and Jakeb; maternal grandparents, Christopher King of Gardnerville and Karen King of Tracy, Calif., and paternal grandparents, Ed and Emma sims of Dallas, Ore.

Skupsky, Morris ~ Wednesday, January 26, 2000. A funeral service for Morris Skupsky, 92, was held yesterday, Jan. 25, at FitzHenry's Funeral Home in Carson City. Rabbi Joel Dobin of North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation conducted the service. Interment followed at Hebrew Cemetery in Reno. Mr. Skupsky died on Jan. 21 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. He was born in New York City on Oct. 28, 1907, to Benjamin and Mary Shapiro Skupsky. He was a resident of Gardnerville for a year and a half, coming from Santa Barbara, Calif., where he worked for Robinson's Department Store for 10 years and loved working in his garden. Before that, he lived in New York City and was an employee for Lamport Textiles for 43 years. Mr. Skupsky was a member of Free and Accepted Masons in New York City and the Thomas Jefferson Lodge #414 of the Knights of Pythias in Brooklyn. He was honored on April 11, 1942. Predeceasing Mr. Skupsky was his wife Gussie, who died in Carson City in December 1998. Survivors include son Arthur Roberts of Minden and daughter Sara Mae La France of Incline Village; brother Charlie Skupsky of Miami, Fla., and sister Anna of New Jersey; grandchildren Cheryl, Robert, Pam, Dahleen, Wayne and Lisa; and 10 great grandchildren.

Smith, Malcolm ~ Saturday, May 6, 2000. A memorial service for Malcolm W. Smith, 73, was held on May 6 at the Calvary Chapel of Carson Valley, with Pastor Daniel Steen officiating. Mr. Smith died on April 28 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Sept. 14, 1926, to Rich and Helen Richards. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Smith was a Gardnerville resident for the past 11 years, coming from North Hollywood, Calif. He was manager for a California Department of Motor Vehicles for 30 years. He enjoyed going to the Carson Valley Inn and traveling to visit his family. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife Margaret M. Smith, who died in February 1999. Surviving are his daughter Tara C. Addeo of Minden and sons Paris R. Romano of Fortuna, Calif., Gavin Smith of West Hills, Calif., and Gregory X. Smith of Reno; sister Susan Morrisey of Butler, Pa.; and eight grandchildren.

Smith, Vivian ~ Saturday, November 20, 1999. Vivian M. Smith, 85, died on Nov. 16 at the Carson Valley Medical Center in Gardnerville. She was born on Aug. 22, 1914, in Detroit, Mich., to Francis and Ethel Collins Maples. Mrs. Smith was a resident of Gardnerville for two years, coming from Reno. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Harold J. Smith, who died on April 30, 1975, son Charles H. Smith, who died on Feb. 29, 1988, and one sister. Survivors include her daughters Dolores V. Prondzinski of Western Springs, Ill., and Nancy J. Herman of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Smokey, Lucille ~ Wednesday, September 6, 2000. A funeral service for Lucille Smokey, 82, will be held Friday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. at Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City. Burial will be at Stewart Indian Cemetery at Stewart. Mrs. Smokey died on Sept. 4 at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. She was born on Aug. 10, 1918, to William and Sadie Joe Smokey. She graduated from Stewart Indian School. A lifelong resident of Nevada, Mrs. Smokey was a homemaker and enjoyed reading, crocheting, traveling and playing cards with friends. She also enjoyed making baskets. Predeceasing her were husbands Joe Johnson Sr. and Duane Foster; sons Robert Johnson and Joe Johnson Jr.; brothers Carnegie Smokey Sr., Romaine Smokey Sr. and Huntington Smokey and sisters Freida, Bernice and Teresa. Surviving are her children Marshall Duane Foster, Maxine Johnson Wyatt and Cynthia Smokey, brother Tommy Smokey and sister Joann Smokey Martinez, all of Gardnerville; sister Geraldine Collett of Carson City; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Snyder, Karl - Record Courier, Wednesday, May 24, 2000. A celebration of the life of Karl Snyder, 88, will be held on Saturday, June 3, at the Riverview Mobile Home Park in Gardnerville, 596 Highway 395, Space 25, at 11 a.m. Mr. Snyder died on May 16 at his Gardnerville home. He was born on Nov. 2, 1911, in Yerington to John and Bertha Pfeifer Snyder. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a retired service repairman for Sears. Mr. Snyder lived in Gardnerville for 22 years, coming from Livermore, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife Agatha Elsie Snyder on Jan. 25, 1993, and brothers Donald and Roland Snyder and sisters Leona Newcomb, Vera Cutting and Evelyn Snyder. Survivors include his son Karl D. Snyder and daughter Cinda L. Dickey, both of Gardnerville, sister Marjorie Morris of Sacramento, Calif., six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Speaker, Janet ~ Wednesday, August 9, 2000. Janet E. Speaker, 43, died on Aug. 3 at South Medical Center in Yerington. She was born in San Mateo, Calif., on July 27, 1957, to John and Teresa Lynch. She was a resident of Gardnerville for seven years, coming from Wichita, Kansas, where she and Bruce Speaker were married. A memorial service will be held at a later date at High Sierra Fellowship in Gardnerville. Mrs. Speaker was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are her husband Bruce and son Patrick, both of Gardnerville, and brother Rick Lynch and aunt Janet Joyce, both of San Mateo.

Springer, Marjorie ~ Saturday, February 12, 2000. Marjorie Lee Springer, 73, mother of Gardnerville resident Terry Bridges, died on Feb. 9 at her home in Fallon. Mrs. Springer was born in Texas on Jan. 2, 1926. She has lived in Fallon for 25 years and served as Secretary for the United States Department of Agriculture there. She was predeceased by her husband Frank C. Springer. Beside her son Terry, Mrs. Springer is survived by her grandchildren, Joshua and Kevin Bridges of Gardnerville and Erika Bridges of Lancaster, Calif., and great-grandson Kyle Bridges, also of Lancaster.

Stender, Tom ~ Saturday, September 16, 2000. A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held for Tom Scott Stender, 47, on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. at Carson Valley Community Church, 3616 No. Sunridge Drive in Jacks Valley. Mr. Stender died at his Gardnerville home on Sept. 15. He was born in Stockton, Calif., on Aug. 25, 1953, to Leon and Shirley Scott Stender. He graduated from Lodi High School and attended Delta College. He was a member of the Morada Fire Department in Stockton. Mr. Stender had lived in Gardnerville for 15 years, coming from Lake Tahoe, where he worked at Caesars Tahoe for 20 years. On Oct. 27, 1989, he and Loretta Mueller were married in Mexico. He was a mountain man who loved the mountains and camping, hiking and skiing. Predeceasing Mr. Stender were his mother Shirley and sister Sandy. Survivors include his wife Loretta of Gardnerville; father Leon and step-mother Bonnie of Stockton; brothers Kurt of Stockton and Alan of Oakdale, Calif.; and sisters Cheryl Le Valley and Barbara Hunter, both of Stockton.

Stoddard, Sylvia ~ Wednesday, December 1, 1999. Sylvia Crowell Stoddard, 90, died on Nov. 11 at Carson Healthcare. She was buried in the veterans' section of Lone Mountain Cemetery, following a simple honor guard of the Veterans' Memorial Association, with Rick James playing taps. Mrs. Stoddard was born to Raymond Benson and Lucy Davis Crowell, who served as a secretary for the Supreme Court of Nevada from 1919 to 1958. Mrs. Stoddard graduated from Carson High School in 1926 and the University of Nevada in 1930. Her first job was a Works Progress Administration project for the State Department of Education. After a brief marriage to Frederick John Blackburn, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps as a private. She emerged as a major four years later, after serving at WAC Training Centers before being transferred to Washington, D.C. Her last assignment in Washington was as a statistician in the General Staff headquarters under General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Back in Carson City, she and James Van Sant Stoddard were married until 1963. Mrs. Stoddard worked with the State Public Works Board for 25 years. Upon her mandatory retirement at the age of 65, she sailed the world in freighters. Her greatest thrill came in 1996 with the publication of her book, "Sam Knew Them When," by Great Basin Press. Mrs. Stoddard is survived by her nephew, Royal Davis Crowell Jr. and two stepsons and niece Judith Crowell Maynor of Carson Valley and her son and daughter.

Stodieck, Edna ~ Saturday, July 8, 2000. Edna A. Stodieck, 91, died on July 2 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Calvin Hawkins. She was born on July 15, 1909, in Deerfield, Kan., to James and Edith Turney Armstrong. She graduated from Reno High School and Reno Business College. She worked as a legal secretary and had her own insurance business as Edna Higgins, General Insurance Agency. Mrs. Stodieck was a 72-year member of Nevada Rebecca Lodge #7 IOOF and Nevada Chapter #13, OES. She was also a long-time member of the Daughters of the Nile and John C. Fremont Chapter of the National Society of the Daughter of the American Revolution. Predeceasing Mrs. Stodieck were her husband A. Cecil Stodieck and sister Marjorie Hanes. Surviving are her daughter Janet Hawkins of Gardnerville, son Jim Higgins of Sparks and step-daughter Kaysia Stodieck Barr of California; granddaughters Jeanne desIslets of Georgia and Kandy Holt of California and grandsons James Higgins of Sparks, Keith Barr of California and Quinten Barr of Nevada; great-grandson Jeffrey desIslets of Georgia; and nieces Barbara Havens and Marjorie P. Silva, both of California, and nephew Rich Havens of Missouri. Graveside services were held yesterday, July 7, at Mountain View Cemetery, under the direction of Nevada Chapter #13 OES and Rebecca Lodge #7 IOOF.

Straw, Walter - Record Courier, Wednesday, May 24, 2000. A graveside service for Walter James Straw, 73, will be held at Valley View Cemetery in Yerington on Saturday, June 3. Mr. Straw, a Yerington resident for five years, died on May 17 in Gardnerville. He was born on Aug. 20, 1926, in Jamestown, N.Y., to Percy and Pauline DeKay Straw. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Mr. Straw loved to golf and fish and enjoyed hunting in his youth. His wife Loretta E. Straw preceded him in death on Sept. 1, 1985, in Northridge, Calif., where they lived at the time. He was also predeceased by a sister, Betty Jermillo. Surviving are sons William E. and Donald L., both of Gardnerville, and Richard J. of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and daughter Linda C. Vaughn of San Miguel, Calif; brothers Jack of Pismo Beach, Calif., Andrew of Yerington, Charles of San Diego, Calif., and Clifford of Newberry Park, Calif., and sisters Virginia Tucker, Delores Rogers, Shirley Baker, all of Yerington, Carol Keatley of Newberry Park, and Beverly Rahm of Thousand Oaks; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Sullivan, Thelma ~ Wednesday, January 19, 2000. A memorial service for Thelma "Sally" Sullivan, 77, a 45-year resident of Zephyr Cove, was held on Jan. 8 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montrose, Calif. Mrs. Sullivan died at her home in La Canada, Calif., on Jan. 2. She was born in Chesing, Mich., on March 22, 1922, to Laura and Byron Miller. She moved to Alhambra, Calif., in the early '30s and graduated from Alhambra High School in Jan. 1940. Soon after, she met William J. Sullivan of Springfield, Mass., at a dance at the Pasadena Civic Center. They were married that November. Mrs. Sullivan was a homemaker, who raised seven children. She loved to travel and was involved with the Cerebral Palsy Foundation. She spent her summers at Lake Tahoe at her home in Zephyr Cove. Predeceasing her was a son, Bill. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, William J. Sullivan; children Jerry of Minden, James of Newark, Del., Kathy of Porterville, Calif., Danny of South Pasadena, Randy of Canyon Country, Calif., and Vicki of Riverside, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Sutton, Albert ~ Saturday, October 30, 1999. Albert H. Sutton, 85, died on Oct. 26 at his Gardnerville home. He was born on June 9, 1914, in Chicago, Ill., to Charles and Elsie Grim Sutton. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Sutton was a musician and piano technician, who had started performing at the age of 15. Before moving to the Valley four years ago, he lived at Lake Tahoe for 26 years. There he played with the big bands for many years. On June 22, 1970, he and Myrna R. Soper were married. He is survived by his wife Myrna of Gardnerville; sons Marty Sutton of Orem, Utah, Bob Sutton of Nephi, Utah, Mark Hanson of Santa Paula, Calif., and Michael Hanson of Long Beach, Calif., and daughter Eryn Foster of Spanish Fork, Utah; and 11 grandchildren.

Sutton, Floyd ~ Wednesday, November 24, 1999. Floyd J. Sutton, a Walker resident for 31 years, died on Nov. 20 in Reno at the age of 82.He was born in Menlo, Kan., on March 31, 1917, to Walter and Ruth Griebel Sutton. On March 31, 1937, he and Willetta M. Burkett were married in Phillipsburg, Kan.Before moving to Walker, Calif., he resided in Long Beach, Calif., where he was an engineer for the Long Beach Fire Department for 26 years. Mr. Sutton enjoyed fishing and camping and loved working with his hands. He was a member of the Antelope Valley Lions Club in Walker. Surviving Mr. Sutton are his wife Willetta of Walker; daughter Sharon K. Cook of Walker and son Gary L. Sutton of Henderson; sisters Janice Barth of Longmont, Colo., and Connie Franklin of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
