Hammons, Earvin ~ December 15, 1999. Earvin Hammons, 74, died on Dec. 9 at his Wellington home.He was born on April 1, 1925, in Inez, Ky., to Roscoe and Vashtie Hammons. He and Edith Sharpe were married in Inez on Dec. 27, 1958. They have resided in Wellington since 1972, coming from Forrest Grove, Ore. Mr. Hammons was a construction supervisor. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling in his RV and sports, especially football. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. Predeceasing Mr. Hammons were both parents and a daughter, Ruth Walk of Morgan Hill, Calif., in 1995.Surviving are his wife Edith of Wellington; daughters Linda Miller of Gardnerville, Doris Tappen of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Donna Pellissier of Albany, Ore.; sons Monte Hammons of Crescent City, Calif., and Terry Hammons of Willard, Ohio; brother Randolph Hammons of Inez; sisters Mary Hammons of Inez and Lynn Bancroft of Norwalk, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 35 great-great-grandchildren.

Hanford, Gerard ~ Saturday, March 18, 2000. A memorial service for Gerard "Pete" Beach Hanford, 83, will be held on Monday, March 20, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Gardnerville, where he was a member. Pastor Pete Nelson will officiate. Mr. Hanford died on March 15 at Carson Valley Medical Center in Gardnerville. He was born on Oct. 5, 1916, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Gerard Beach and Minerva Robinson Hanford. A graduate of the University of Nevada, he was a resident of the Carson Valley for 14 years, coming from San Jose, Calif. He married his wife, Lorene, 48 years ago in May. Mr. Hanford was a mechanical engineer in the telecommunications industry. He loved to travel and truly loved narrow gauge steam railroads. He was an active member of the Soaring Society, and both he and his wife were very active members of the Republican party. Survivors include his wife Lorene Hanford of Gardnerville; daughter Barbara Tindale of Stateline and sons Ronald Hanford of Vancouver, Wash., Robert Hanford of El Dorado Hills, Calif., and Richard Hanford of Monte Sereno, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Hargis, John ~ Saturday, May 6, 2000. John Calhoun Hargis III, 83, died on May 1 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. He was born on March 13, 1917, in Kiowa, Kan., to John Hargis II and Ruth Richardson Hargis. A real estate appraiser, Mr. Hargis lived in Carson City and Gardnerville since 1991, coming from Elkhart, Kansas. He was a member of the Unity Church of Today in Genoa and enjoyed reading and spending time with friends at the senior center in Carson City. He was predeceased by his son John Hargis IV in 1998. Surviving are his wife Donna Hargis of Carson City; daughters Patricia Crane of Yuba City, Calif., Pamela Rodgers of West Salem, Wisc., and Jessica Gracie of Eureka, Calif.; two brothers and one sister; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Harker, Geraldine ~ Saturday, March 18, 2000. Geraldine S. Harker, longtime resident of Minden, died on Feb. 22 at the Life Care Center in Reno at the age of 88. She was born in Elko on April 22, 1911, to Wilbur and Dorothy Robinson Smiley. A descendant of a pioneer Nevada family that settled in Starr Valley, Mrs. Harker attended school in Elko. She was a homemaker and a clerk in Douglas County. Her husband, Robert Asa Harker, predeceased her in 1988. Survivors include her sons Roger G. Harker of Minden, Howard R. Harker of Mill Valley, Calif., and Charles D. Harker of Media, Penn., and daughter Charlotte Harker Allison of Mill Valley; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Harrison, Alfred ~ Saturday, October 7, 2000. A funeral service for Alfred Harrison, 63, a lifelong resident of Coleville, Calif., will be held today, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. at the Coleville Methodist Church. Mr. Harrison died on Oct. 1 at Big Pine Care Center. He is survived by his brother Kenneth Kizer of Coleville.

Harrison, Florence ~ Saturday, July 8, 2000. Florence Jeanette Harrison, 86, died on July 4 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. She was born on May 28, 1914, in Sacramento, Calif., and had been a resident of Gardnerville for 16 years, coming from Elko. Mrs. Harrison loved to sew and create stuffed animals. She played softball until her mid-50s and was an avid fisherman and hunter. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother. Survivors include her sons Dan Harrison of Burns, Ore., and Ted Harrison of Elko; daughters Helen Wickman of Gardnerville, Mary Anderson of Gaylord, Mich., and Margaret Harrison of Sylmar, Calif.; and sister Marion Hellman of Stockton, Calif. Internment will be in Elko.

Hartman, Allen ~ Wednesday, April 19, 2000. Allen E. Hartman, 72, died on April 14 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. He was born on Dec. 30, 1927, in Elizabeth, Pa., to Charles and Ruby Monheim Hartman. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a musician in his youth and enjoyed playing the saxophone. On Sept. 8, 1963, he and Elaine N. Fox were married in Pasadena, Calif. Mr. Hartman was a ski instructor for 35 years and owner of The Sports Store in Simi Valley, Calif. He moved to Gardnerville two years ago, coming from Burbank, Calif. He was known as "Uncle Al" from Uncle Al's Greenhouse, and he owned a hydroponic greenhouse in Gardnerville. "I built the 1,500 square-foot greenhouse for him and he was going to add on to it," said neighbor and friend, Mike Jarrett. "Al was a very, very pleasant man - very upbeat. He always had a joke, or something pleasant to say." "Al was a pretty amazing man," said friend John O'Neill, who was a regular customer of Al's hydroponic tomato business. "He played with many of the big bands. He was a ski instructor in Colorado and he had the most unbelievable tomatoes." His sister Brenna preceded him in death in 1996. Surviving are his wife Elaine Hartman of Gardnerville and godchildren Dr. Scott Ellner of San Diego, Calif., and Jordan Ellner of Los Angeles, Calif.

Hatch, Pearl ~ Wednesday, January 26, 2000. Pearl "Soni" Hatch, 79, died on Jan. 21 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. She was born on Dec. 2, 1920, to Fred and Mabel Leigh Hatch. She served in the U.S. Army. Before moving to Gardnerville in October 1986, she lived in Los Osos, Calif., for 30 years. She worked at the Carson Valley Inn for 13 years and enjoyed ocean fishing and painting. She loved her two dogs, Kody and Kacey. She leaves behind many close friends in Gardnerville.

Hayes, Alvin Sr. ~ Saturday, January 29, 2000. A funeral service for Alvin Lee Hayes Sr., 65, will be held today, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. at Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City. Burial will follow at Walton's Carson Gardens Cemetery in Carson City. Mr. Hayes died on Jan. 26 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. He was born in Santa Monica on May 20, 1934, to Clyde and Rose Booth Hayes. He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hayes lived in Carson City for the last 31 years, coming from Panorama City, Calif., and was a funeral director for Walton's Funeral Home during that time. He was a member of E-Clampus Vitus, the Snowshoe Thompson Chapter and the American Legion and was the vice president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Carson Aerie 1006. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carson City. Mr. Hayes was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating. He also loved dancing, music and western movies. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepdaughter Karla Nelson and sisters Margarite Alexander and Mildred MacMillan. Survivors include his wife Valera Hayes of Carson City; sons Alvin L. Hayes Jr. of Carson City and Michael T. Hayes of Dayton; brothers Roy Hayes of Merlin, Ore., Clyde Hayes of Garden Grove, Calif., Richard Hayes of Mission Hills, Calif., and Robert Hayes of Port Angeles, Wash.; sisters Hazel Wright and Dorothy Jucker, both of Las Vegas, and Betsy Raymond of Twain Harte, Calif.; grandchildren Chrissy, Jason and Brianna; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Heath, Virgil ~ Saturday, April 1, 2000. A graveside memorial service for Virgil T. Heath, 93, will be held on Monday, April 3, at 2:30 p.m. at the Genoa Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Hafele residence in Minden. Mr. Heath died on March 29 at his Minden home. He was born on May 9, 1906, in Ashwood, Ore., to Gerald Birton and Jessie Taylor Heath. In 1937, he graduated from Oregon State School of Forestry and in 1945 from Princeton University School of Military Government. He and Marion Ryan were married in 1944. Mr. Heath was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy and served in Okinawa, North Africa and Dutch Harbor during World War II. He had more than 30 years of service with the federal government. During his career, he was Division Supervisor for the U.S. Forest Service in Alaska and was a member of the Alaska Yukon Pioneers; State Supervisor of timber resources for the state of Oregon; Assistant Chief Forester in Washington, D.C.; and program coordinator for the BLM in the states of Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Idaho. Mr. Heath was a resident of Minden for 13 years, coming from Lake Tahoe. He was preceded in death by his wife Marion and son Richard. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law Linda and Walter Hafele and grandsons Anton of Seattle, Wash., and Andre Hafele of Minden.

Herdt, John ~ Saturday, October 30, 1999. A memorial service with military honors will be held for John Joseph Herdt at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31, at the Topaz Community Center. Mr. Herdt died on Oct. 24. He was born in New York City in 1932. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Post #3630 at Topaz Ranch Estates. Mr. Herdt moved to the area in 1991. Prior to that, he worked at UCLA as facility manager until retirement and was in the Democratic Central Committee. Surviving are his wife Joanne Herdt; daughter Jacqueline Herdt; sister Peggy Herdt; stepsons Jared and Andrew Clark; grandsons Dylan, Zachary and Kald; nephews Richard Duffy, John Weber, Tom and Gary Herdt and nieces Jerry Duffy, Winnie Edmiston, Kathy Glancotti, Mary Shea; and sister-in-law Mary Herdt.

Hill, Doris ~ Saturday, August 19, 2000. Doris Louise Hill, 69, died on Aug. 10 at her Jacks Valley home. A private memorial service was held on Aug. 12 on the lawns of her daughter and family, Dianna and Larry English, also of Jacks Valley, with burial at Goleta Cemetery in Goleta, Calif. Mrs. Hill was born in Denver, Colo., on Feb. 15, 1931, and attended schools in North Denver. On Feb. 18, 1950, she married Donald A. Hill, and after residing in Wheatridge and Boulder, moved to California in 1953. The couple were owners of Incline Printing in Incline Village in 1977 and from 1980 until 1993. Previously they owned and operated Campus Press in Goleta for 12 years and the Ojai Valley News in Ojai, Calif. In February 2000, Mr. and Mrs. Hill celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family in Reno and on an extended cruise to Mexico. Of her many trips to Europe, Mrs. Hill's favorite was a visit to her grandmother's and cousins' former homes in northern Germany. Survivors by her husband Donald; daughters Dianna English of Jacks Valley and Leanna Anderson of Wickenburg, Ariz., and son Donald Jr. of Incline Village; sisters Joanne Skeen of Wheatridge and Maxine Herrell of Denver; and grandchildren Jenny and Alyssa English of Jacks Valley and Lauren and Owen Anderson of Arizona.

Hill, Marguerite ~ Wednesday, November 10, 1999 . A funeral service for Marguerite Hill, 82, was held on Monday, Nov. 8, at St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Carson City, where she was an active member. Burial was at Fernley Cemetery following the service. Mrs. Hill, a Carson City resident for 20 years, died on Nov. 4 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. She was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on Oct. 30, 1917, to Joseph and Mary Katula Lica. Mrs. Hill had been a telephone operator and lived in Stockton, Calif., before moving to Carson City. Predeceasing her were her husband Howard Hill in 1994, daughter Christine Fournier, brother Sigmund Lica and sisters Marion Lebens and Eleanor Johnson. Surviving are daughters Margie Novotny of Minden and Janice Christophersen of Klamath Falls, Ore., son Ken Hill of Carson City; brother Will Lica of San Diego, Calif., and sister Leona Reddinger of Glendale, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Hind, James ~ Saturday, November 20, 1999. Berkeley, Calif., native James Matthew Hind, 89, a resident of Minden and former resident of San Francisco and Cupertino, Calif., died Nov. 14. A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Camp Galilee, Glenbrook, Lake Tahoe. Mr. Hind was the husband of the late Gwendolyn Wolfe Hind. Survivors include his daughter Gina Hind Hodgson of Danville, Calif.; grandchildren Leslie Hodgson of Douglas County, Patrick Hodgson of Pollack Pines, Calif., Elizabeth Hodgson MacLean of Lafayette, Calif.; great-grandsons Alexander and Zachary MacLean and Nicholas Hodgson. Hopkins, George ~ October 6, 1999 . George S. Hopkins, 78, died on Sept. 22 at his home in Gardnerville. A memorial service with full military honors will be held on Monday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Cemetery in Fernley. Mr. Hopkins was born on Oct. 12, 1920, in Paris, France, to George and Clarisse Heraud Hopkins. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. On Nov. 4, 1946, he and Catherine Yasko were married in Hollywood, Calif. A Gardnerville resident for 9 years, coming from Mar Vista, Calif., Mr. Hopkins was a manufacturing engineer who manufactured the Environmental Control Systems for the Gemini and Apollo space missions. He also helped develop the Environmental Control System for the M-1 tank. Mr. Hopkins enjoyed fixing things and watching football on TV, especially the USC team. He enjoyed spending time with his family and had a special gift of wit. Survivors include his wife Catherine of Gardnerville; sons Glenn John Hopkins of Minden, James V.C. Hopkins of Placerville, Calif., and Thomas George Hopkins of Huntington Beach, Calif., and daughter Sharon C. Rodriguez of Mar Vista; brother John A. Hopkins of Santa Monica, Calif.; niece Lorraine Osborne of Santa Maria, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Houseal, Shirlee ~ Wednesday, June 28, 2000. Shirlee W. Houseal, 76, died on June 23 at Washoe Care Center in Sparks. She was born on April 3, 1924, in Haynes, N.D., to Homer and Anna O'Donnell Wright. She was a homemaker who worked for the Red Cross during World War II, and she and her husband were constant supporters of all veterans' groups. Mrs. Houseal was a Gardnerville resident for 20 years, coming from Tucson, Ariz. She loved the desert and living at Topaz Ranch Estates. Her husband Nathaniel "Joe" Houseal died on April 15, 1999, in Gardnerville.

Hubbard, Richard ~ Wednesday, March 22, 2000. A memorial service for Richard L. Hubbard, 72, will be held Saturday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville. Pastor Pete Nelson will officiate. Mr. Hubbard died March 18 at the Virginia Creek Skilled Nursing Facility in Gardnerville. He was born Dec. 23, 1927, in Painesville, Ohio, to William and Helen Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard was in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University, transferring to the University of Michigan where he received his bachelor of science degree in forestry with a major in wildlife. During summers in high school and college, he worked as a commercial fisherman on Lake Erie. He earned a master of science degree in range management at Utah State University and did further graduate work in forest ecology at University California Berkley. Mr. Hubbard worked for the Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, a research arm of the U.S. Forest Service from 1952, until his retirement in 1986. He conducted and was in charge of both range and wildlife research in California, Hawaii and the Pacific Islands and retired as assistant director in charge of long range planning and research application. Mr. Hubbard served on the Governor's Salmon/Steelhead Advisory Committee, the Delta Environmental Advisory Committee, chaired the West-Coast Salmon Advisory Committee to the Pacific Fisheries Management Council and served as executive secretary to the Western Agricultural Research Committee. After his retirement from the U.S. Forest Service in 1986, he served as executive director of the California Natural Resources Federation, the state affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation, until moving from the Bay area to the Carson Valley in 1989. Mr. Hubbard has been actively involved in the Gardnerville/Carson Valley Kiwanis Club, High Sierra Fly Casters, Carson Valley Tennis Club and the Carson Valley United Methodist Church. He loved fly fishing and playing tennis and was well known for his computer expertise. Surviving Mr. Hubbard are his wife of 44 years Shirley A. Hubbard of Gardnerville; daughter s Denise Frueh of Gardnerville and Teresa Miranda of Susanville, Calif.; sister Marion Babbitt of Chico, Calif.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Helen and William Hubbard and brother Marshall Hubbard.

Huffine, Gerald ~ Wednesday, September 20, 2000. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held for Gerald Forrest Huffine, 63, today, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville. Father Bill Nadeau will be Celebrant. Mr. Huffine died at his Gardnerville home on Sept. 14. He was born in Wilmar, Calif., on Sept. 15, 1936, to Forrest and Bernadette Clough Huffine. On Sept. 21, 1957, he and Gloria Espinosa were married at the Chapel of Roses in Pasadena, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1965. Mr. Huffine was a machinist at the Department of Water and Power and later a machinist supervisor for Los Angeles County. He resided in Hacienda Heights, Calif., before moving to Gardnerville seven years ago. Survivors include his wife Gloria Huffine of Gardnerville; son Gerald A. Huffine of Duarte, Calif.; brother Randy Huffine of Rosemeade, Calif., and sister Betty Robles of Guadalupe, Calif.; and grandson Zachary F. Huffine of Gardnerville.

Huffman, Harold ~ Saturday, November 6, 1999. Harold Huffman, 86, a Gardnerville resident since 1954, died on Oct. 31 at Tahoe Pacific Hospital. He was born in Iowa on Oct. 1, 1913, to W.H. and Eva Bishop Huffman. He was a motel owner and had previously lived in Long Beach, Calif.Mr. Huffman is survived by his friends Ted and Lucy Rich and Terry and Sissy Walton, all of Coleville.

Humphreys, Joseph ~ Saturday, September 30, 2000. A graveside service for Joseph Dale Humphreys, 71, was held yesterday, Sept. 29, at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno. Mr. Humphreys died on Sept. 25 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. He was born in Ogden, Utah, on July 5, 1929, to Clifford and Sarah Smith Humphreys. A Nevada resident for 65 years, he lived in Gardnerville for the last 11. He graduated from Sparks High School and served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Humphreys worked as a fleet mechanic for Sierra Pacific Power Company and retired in 1994. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Sharon in 1991. Survivors include his wife Juanita Humphreys of Gardnerville; sons John Humphreys of Gardnerville, Alan Humphreys of Carson City and Grant Humphreys of Alaska and daughters Joni Humphreys of Silver Springs and Dawna Braunagel of Reno; brothers Garth Humphreys of Gardnerville, Wayne Humphreys of Sparks and Farrell Humphreys of Utah; and ten grandchildren.

Hussman, James ~ Saturday, December 18, 1999. A funeral service for James Alden Hussman, 79, will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. at Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville. Rev. Pet Nelson will officiate. Interment will be at Garden Cemetery in Gardnerville. Mr. Hussman was born to George and Ruth Williams Hussman on Dec. 19, 1919, in Gardnerville, where he lived his entire life. He was a Carson Valley rancher and a member of Alpine Land and Reservoir Company, Douglas County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service committee, Nevada Cattlemen's Association, National Cattlemen's Association, Carson Valley Conservation District and Minden Milling Company. He was named Cooperator of the Year in 1988 for the Carson Valley Conservation District. Mr. Hussman donated the land for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet and the Family Support Council building. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and traveling with his wife, Kathryn L. Hussman, who died on May 28, 1996, in Gardnerville. He was also predeceased by his brother, George Hussman. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, David A. Hussman and Kathleen of Gardnerville, and a grandson, Beau Valory, also of Gardnerville.

Hydrick, John Gabriel ~ Friday, May 26, 2000. Funeral services will be today, May 24, 1 p.m., for John Gabriel Hydrick, who died May 19. He was 44. Mr. Hydrick was born Feb. 23, 1956, in San Diego, Calif. He was a 34-year resident of Tahoe, loved the outdoors and shared all of his loves with his daughters, Heidi and Brittany, and later, his wife Barbara and step-children Sam and Julia. At the age of 16, he was an accomplished pilot, rock climber, hang glider pilot, and scuba diver. He dove all over the United States, Australia and the Red, Japan, and China Seas. But his passion was whitewater kayaking and rafting. He kayaked most of the Class V rivers in the United States. To relax, he sailed Tahoe and San Francisco Bay. Mr. Hydrick graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1974. In 1977-78, he served a two-year mission to Korea and Little Korea in Chicago for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He received a bachelor of arts degree in international business from Brigham Young University, after which he served an internship with the United State Department of State, Korea Office, translating top-secret documents. He was heavily recruited by the FBI, CIA, and NSA, but chose to work in the private sector and live in the West. He was a master cabinet-maker and carpenter. He served as a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America in Carson City for seven years and taught many young men the skills. He was fluent in Korean and Japanese and worked for Bently Nevada Corp., Minden, as manager of foreign languages, where he supervised development, translation and production of corporate literature. His job assignments took him all over the world, and his family often went with him. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Hydrick; daughters, Heidi and Brittany Hydrick, stepson, Samuel Sourikoff, stepdaughter, Julia Sourikoff; (he was predeceased by wife Sharon Elizabeth Wood Hydrick); mother, June Carsten and father Plymton Hydrick; brothers, Rick, Carter, George and Don; sisters, Michaell Allen, Ora Smith, Christi Hydrick; grandmother, Marie Whitehurst; various aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
