Candelario, Marlene ~ Wednesday, August 9, 2000. Marlene Ames Candelario died on July 1 following an automobile accident in Sacramento, Calif. She had worked in Gardnerville for Contel (now GTE) in 1974 for two years. Her father, Buzz Ames, had been with Contel for 20 years, until his death in 1984. Mrs. Candelario is survived by her mother Joan Ames of Gardnerville; sons Brandon, Jason and Jeffrey of Yerington; brothers Matt of Carson City and Ron of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. Her brother Arnold predeceased her in 1992 in Stockton, Calif.

Cardinelli, Ernest ~ Saturday, March 18, 2000. A memorial service for Ernest J. Cardinelli, 73, will be held today, March 18, at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, 100 Highway 339 in Yerington. Mr. Cardinelli died March 14 at South Lyon Medical Center's Long Care Facility in Yerington. He was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Reno to Constantine and Rachael Pezzi Cardinelli and had been a Yerington resident since 1949. He was a farmer his entire life, working on the Bar C Ranch for many years. Mr. Cardinelli was also a minister for 38 years as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Yerington. He was predeceased by a son, Bryan Cardinelli, in April 1997. Surviving are his wife Kathleen and son Joseph Cardinelli, both of Yerington; son Daniel Cardinelli, daughter Teresa Robinson and brothers Donald Cardinelli and Louis Devincenzi, all of Reno; daughter Colleen Ivey of New Mexico; step-daughter Jody Beth Roberts of Pleasant Hills, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Carlyon, John - Record Courier, Wednesday, May 24, 2000. John R. Carlyon, 59, died on May 21 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. Mr. Carlyon was born on Dec. 7, 1940, in San Rafael, Calif., to Glenn and Katherine Latimer Carlyon. He was a Gardnerville resident for four years, coming from San Jose, Calif., where he was a Fire Engineer for the San Jose Fire Department for almost 30 years. He also worked as a sheet metal contractor for 15 years. Mr. Carlyon enjoyed fishing and watching football and baseball on television. He was predeceased by his parents. Surviving are his longtime companion Molly Carlyon of Carson City; daughters Theresa R. and husband John Rodriguez of Fresno, Calif., and Kimberly A. Carlyon of Phoenix; sister Mary Carlyon of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren Robert, Jeffrey, Jenna and Kayla; and great granddaughter Alexis.

Carriker, Grace ~ Saturday, March 25, 2000. Grace W. Carriker, 90, of Lecanto, Fla., died Feb. 20 at Cypress Cove Nursing Home. She was born April 30, 1909, in Newberry, Ind. While living in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Mrs. Carriker was past president and a lifelong member of Soroptimist International. She was South Lake Tahoe's Woman of the Year in 1965, and in 1977, she established the Women's Center and Drug Abuse Center there. She was past director of the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Carriker was active in the Topaz Baptist Church and Topaz Sage Hens in the early 1980s. From 1984 to 1988, she ran the Tri-Cities Food Bank in Richland, Wash. She was also a past president of Toastmasters and manager of the Civic Department in Long Beach, Calif. Two years ago, she moved from San Jose, Calif., to Florida, where she was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Lecanto. Mrs. Carriker was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Vernon "Hoot" Carriker. Surviving are a niece, Karen Venard of Homosassa, and a nephew, John Byers of Denver, Colo.

Carver, Betty W. ~ Saturday, September 23, 2000 A memorial service for Betty W. Carver, 70, of Genoa, will be held on Monday, Oct. 2, at 3 p.m. in the Genoa Town Hall. Mrs. Carver died on Sept. 19 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. She grew up and lived in Arizona, Oregon and California before moving to South Lake Tahoe. In 1963, she and her husband, Robert, became owners and operators of the historic Genoa Bar, known as "the oldest thirst parlor in Nevada." Mrs. Carver also owned and operated for many years the Westbrook Corner Antique Store. She was a business person, politically and community minded, and participated in management for some years of the annual Genoa Candy Dance and Arts and Crafts Faire. She was instrumental in organizing the first craft fair in the early 1970s. Surviving are her husband, Robert D. Carver; daughter Carey Pozzi and son Torke Carver; brother Lee Westbrook and sister Pat Lewallen, both of Georgia; three grandchildren and one great-grandson; and cousins in California, Arizona, Georgia and Oregon.

Cassity, Ida ~ Saturday, September 9, 2000. Ida Kate (Kemple) Cassity, 96, a Carson City resident for the past 14 years, died Sept. 3 at Carson Health Care. A private family gathering in the Hualapai Mountains, outside Kingman, Ariz., will be held at a later date. Mrs. Cassity was born Sept. 29, 1903, in Los Angles, Calif., to John and Kate Connelley Kemple. Her early years were spent at the Yellow Pine Mining Camp and Goodsprings, Nev. Before moving to Carson City, she lived for many years in Las Vegas and Kingman. Mrs. Cassity was a homemaker and loved baking, bird watching and reading. She was very proud of her Connelley/Kemple heritage and enjoyed genealogy research and family pictures. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Cassity in 1986 in Kingman and her children Dorothy McIver in 1925, Stanley McIver in 1993 and Earl Cassity in 1984. Among her survivors are her sister Evelyn Stewart of Las Vegas; daughter-in-law Beverly McIver of Carson City; sisters-in-law Juanita Zabel of Las Vegas, Mabel Bollschweiler of St. George, Utah, and Ruth Brooks of Kingman; grandchildren Roderick McIver and Scott McIver of Carson City, Sharon Arnold of Portland, Ore., and Chris Artus and Bonnie Field of Las Vegas; great-grandchildren Amanda McIver and Matthew McIver of Minden, Adam McIver and Damien McIver of Carson City, Christine Artus, Paul Artus, Elaina Artus, Kristen Marina and Steven Fields of Las Vegas, Chuck Adams of Portland, Ore., Donald Schultz of Albany, Ore., and Jeremy McIver of Moscow, Idaho; great-grandchildren Dylan Hinks and Michael Cobb of Carson City, Anthony Adams of Portland, Nathan McIver of Moscow, Idaho, and Cheyenne Rain Schultz of Albany; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Champlain, Janet ~ September 22, 1999. Janet Audrey Champlain, 79, died on Sept. 17 at her home in Wellington. She was born on Nov. 18, 1919, in New Haven, Conn., to George and Marion Thompson Divine. Mrs. Champlain was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and home improvement projects. She had been a Wellington resident for four years, coming from Grants Pass, Ore. Predeceasing her were her parents; her husband Lyman Champlain, who died on May 4, 1999, in Wellington; brother David Sorensen; and grandson Michael Speed. Surviving are daughters Jeri L. Riley and Laurel L. Champlain, both of Wellington, and sons Ralph W. Champlain of Eagle Point, Ore.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Chilton, John ~ Wednesday, January 26, 2000. John Carlin Chilton, 81, died on Jan. 20 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. He was born in Oklahoma on July 27, 1918, to Wade and Ruth Drury Chilton. He lived in Carson City for 10 years, coming from Hayward, Calif., where he and his wife Virginia were married in 1946. Mr. Chilton had worked as an airline machinist and was a member of the American Legion-Forty 8 in Carson City. Surviving are his wife Virginia Chilton of Carson City; son Steve Chilton of Zephyr Cove and daughters Karen Chilton of Carson City and Kathy Loverin of Clear Lake, Calif.; brother Henry Chilton of Madison, Wisc.; and grandson Michael Chilton.

Clement, Doris ~ Wednesday, December 29, 1999. Doris Bowling Clement, 91, died on Dec. 21 at the Lifecare Center in Reno. A gathering of family and friends will be held today, Dec. 29, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Carson City. Mrs. Clement was born on May 2, 1908, in McWhorter, Ky., to Attison and Josephine Angel Bowling. She graduated from Pasadena Hospital Nursing School and worked as a nurse. On Dec. 23, 1932, she and Clarence Clement were married in San Jose, Calif. They lived in San Jose and Galt, Calif. Mr. Clement died on April 14, 1976, and Mrs. Clement moved to Carson City in 1979. She is survived by her son, LeRoy Clement of Carson City; brother Woodson Bowling of Las Vegas; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Cleveland, Hazel ~ Wednesday, September 13, 2000. Hazel E. Cleveland, 84, died on Sept. 7 at her Wellington home. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Cleveland was born on Dec. 2, 1915, in Portageville, N.Y., to Edwin and Grace Smith Walker. She was a Topaz Ranch Estates resident for nine months and had previously lived in the Gardnerville area for three years. She was a homemaker who enjoyed reading and her cats. Predeceasing Mrs. Cleveland were her parents; husband Voyle Robert Cleveland, who died in Taft, Texas, in 1979; sons James E. Martin, who died in 1999 in Maryland, and David McCarin, who died in 1965 in New York; and two brothers. Survivors include her sons William N. Cleveland of Gardnerville and Melvin E. Cleveland of Mason; daughter Ruby L. Hoyne of Gardnerville; 25 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Cohen, Alan ~ Wednesday, November 24, 1999. Alan Sherman Cohen, 76, died on Nov. 17 at his Gardnerville home. He was born in Denver, Colo., on Oct. 2, 1923, to Sam and Emma Fisher Cohen. He served in the U.S. Air force during World War II and was a senior civilian official at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver for many years. Mr. Cohen was a resident of Gardnerville for 30 years, coming from California. His wife, Sable Cohen, died in 1996. He is survived by his brother Mendel F. Cohen of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Cooper, Leona ~ Wednesday, August 9, 2000. Leona Cooper, 92, of Topaz Ranch Estates died on Aug. 4 at South Lyon Medical Center. She was born on Feb. 7, 1908, in Fontenale, Iowa, to Carl and Florence Gallup Ewing. On Sept. 22, 1953, she and Walter Cooper were married in Reno. Before moving to Wellington 14 years ago, she lived in Murrieta, Calif., for nearly 40 years. Mrs. Cooper was a homemaker and a member of the Topaz Sage Hens Homemakers. She raised and trained horses and enjoyed her birds and dogs. She also enjoyed working with children. Predeceasing Mrs. Cooper was her son Tommy Hotz, who died in 1991 in Sagle, Idaho. Surviving are her husband Walter Cooper and daughter Joan Roripaugh, both of Wellington; daughter-in-law Beverly Hotz of Sagle; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Cordes, Donna ~ Saturday, July 15, 2000. Donna R. Cordes, 67, a former Carson Valley resident for 47 years, died on July 7. She was born on April 6, 1933, and was a native of Mitchell, S.D. She was married for 30 years to the late Vern Cordes of Genoa. Surviving are her children, Christina Singleton, Brad Cordes and Jennifer Cordes, also former residents of Carson Valley and graduates of Douglas High School; grandchildren Linda Kean and Sara Singleton; and great-granddaughter Alexis. Mrs. Cordes will be lovingly and respectfully remembered as a truly dignified lady and her sacrifices for her family will never be forgotten. Family and friends will be notified of a memorial service to be held in Genoa at a later date.

Cornelsen, Arlyss ~ September 4, 1999. Gardnerville resident and former bank manager Arlyss ("Arlie") Cornelsen succumbed to complications following surgery at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Tahoe, Calif., Aug. 30. He was employed as both assistant manager and manager of the Gardnerville branch of the Bank of America from 1974 until his retirement 10 years later. Born in Hillsboro, Kan., in 1915, Cornelsen's banking career had led to vice president and managerial posts in Arizona and California prior to his move to Gardnerville. During the 1970s and '80s, he was an active member of the Gardnerville-Carson Valley Kiwanis Club, including a term as president. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Cornelsen of Gardnerville; two sons, Douglas Cornelsen of Dearborn, Mich., and Alan Cornelsen of Hillsboro, Ore.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Cresswell, Elsie ~ Friday, May 19, 2000. A graveside inurnment for Elsie Marie Cresswell, 96, was held yesterday, May 19, at Eastside Memorial park in Minden. Mrs. Cresswell died on May 11 at Nevada Cares in Carson City. She was born on March 29, 1904, in Shermanville, Ill., to William and Anna Wadel Ernswald. She was a homemaker and had lived in Gardnerville for 11 years, coming from Chester, Calif. Her husband Corlis Cresswell predeceased her on Dec. 10, 1981. Surviving are her sisters Helen Long of Fair Oaks, Calif., and Florence Criscione of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and several nieces and nephews.

Crippen, Gertrude ~ Wednesday, September 20, 2000. Gertrude Crippen, 88, died in Carson City on Sept. 18. She was born in Murdoc, S.D., on Dec. 14, 1911. She came to Nevada five years ago from Southern California, where she had worked in the aircraft industry and was past president of the Senior Citizens of Yorba Linda and a member of the United Methodist Church of Yorba Linda. She had also worked as a church secretary. Mrs. Crippen's husband of 41 years, Thomas Phillip Crippen, died in December 1970. She was also predeceased by a son, Elliot Dale Crippen, in 1994. Surviving are her daughter Barbara Jean Griffith of Minden and son Thomas C. Crippen of Palm Desert, Calif.

Criss, Marie ~ Wednesday, September 13, 2000. Marie Taylor Criss, 94, died on Sept. 10 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. A memorial service and inurnment will be held in Ventura, Calif. Mrs. Criss was born on Oct. 1, 1905, in New Castle, Pa., to Frank and Sylvia Holsinger Taylor. She was a graduate of West Penn Hospital Nursing School in Pittsburgh, Pa., and worked as a registered nurse in Pennsylvania and Ventura, Calif., for over 40 years. A Gardnerville resident for more than seven years, Mrs. Criss loved travelling. She was preceded in death by her husband James O. Criss, who died in 1963 in Ventura, and her son James Lee Criss, who died in 1961, also in Ventura. Surviving are her daughter Joan M. Swisher of Gardnerville; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Critor, Augustine ~ Wednesday, January 19, 2000. Augustine N. Critor, 88, of Coleville, Calif., died on Jan. 13 at Vencor Hospital in Folsom, Calif., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident last month. Mr. Critor was born on Nov. 7, 1911, in Norwalk, Ohio. During his lifetime, he enjoyed a variety of occupations, including that of a bus driver in Canton, Ohio, a mechanic supervisor for Lockheed Aircraft during World War II and a compliance checker for the U.S. Forest Service for 16 years, as well as participating in everything from the manufacturing to estimating and laying of carpet. He served 55 years in the Scottish Rite, 55 years as a 32nd degree Blue Lodge Member in the Masons and as the Pastor Patron for Eastern Star. Mr. Critor is survived by his wife of 20 years, Bonnie Marie Critor; son Chris Critor; brother Alex Critari; stepson Roger Cummings and stepdaughters Susan Torley, Donna Evans and Gloria Ferriera; one grandson; 11 step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Interment will be at the Coleville Cemetery where Mr. Critor will be laid to rest next to his first wife, Mary Helen Critor.

Cumins, Sandra ~ Wednesday, January 12, 2000. A graveside service for Sandra Sue Cumins, 58, of Las Vegas, was held on Jan. 10 at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden. Mrs. Cumins was born on July 1, 1941, in Las Vegas, to James and Lottie Hubnak Martin. She was visiting family in Gardnerville when she died on Jan. 6 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in Carson City. She was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist church. She enjoyed babysitting and spending time with her family and friends. Mrs. Cumins' parents preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband Alva Cumins of Las Vegas; daughter Pat Zumpft of Gardnerville; sisters Sheryl Harker of Minden and Sharon Marren of Las Vegas; two grandchildren; and one nephew and six nieces.

Cushman, Peggy Jo ~ Saturday, April 8, 2000. A graveside service will be held for Peggy Jo Cushman, 42, on Monday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at Mottsville Cemetery. Mrs. Cushman died on April 5 at her home in Wellington. She was born in Richmond, Calif., on Dec. 21, 1957, to Charles and Martha Cabel Nagel. She and Matt Cushman were married 22 years ago in Minden. A Wellington resident for 24 years, Mrs. Cushman worked at Topaz Lodge at Topaz Lake for 22 years. She loved to ride her Harley. She loved her granddaughter and loved life in general. Predeceasing Mrs. Cushman were her father and a brother Charles D. Nagel, who died in 1999. Surviving are her husband Matt L. Cushman Sr. of Wellington; her mother Martha J. Baker of Fort Worth, Tex.; daughter Latisha R. Nagel of Gardnerville and son Matthew L. Cushman Jr. of Wellington; brother Greg Nagel of Grass Valley, Calif., and sisters Jana Simpson and Tamara Nagel, both of Fort Worth; and granddaughter Kayla Johnson of Gardnerville.
