Census Research in New Jersey - Return to the Research Page

New Jersey's first 'national' census available is for 1830.

Prior to 1830 there are State Tax lists from 1772-1822, and in 1793 a special State militia index. The U.S. Census records (for NJ) from 1800-1820 were destroyed. See the New Jersey State Library's listing of the censuses taken in New Jersey and their status.

How do you find out what county a township or city is located in?
The quickest way I have found to do this, is to use a search engine (such as google.com, or your own favorite) and type in "town county NJ" or "town county New Jersey", substituting the name of the town you want to locate, instead of the word 'town' in the example shown. Usually one of the first two or three resulting web sites should provide that information for you.

In addition several of the larger regional and national historical societies, offer the service as part of your membership. If your local library does not offer this, check with your county library.
