ROY St. JOHN of Wickenburg, died Jan. 29 in Sun City. He was 73. Mr. St. John was born July 27, 1923 in Superior, Wisconsin. He had just recently retired to Arizona. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Leona, of Superior, Wisc. And Wickenburg; three sons Ed and Dave St. John of Superior and Richard St. John of Ladysmith, Wisc.; a daughter, Sharon St. John of Madison, Wisconsin; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Mr. St. John was preceded in death by his father, Hilary; mother, Elsie; son, Michael; grandson, Richard, Jr.; and granddaughter, Kelly PODGORAK. Interment will be in Wisconsin at a later date.

TOMMIE L. SAILOR formerly of Wickenburg died July 2 in San Diego, California. She was 84. Mrs. Sailor was born May 2, 1912 in Stephensville, Texas. She had lived in Wickenburg for 14 years before moving to San Diego to be closer to relatives after the death of her husband Lloyd in1987. Survivors include her nephew and wife John and Madeleine TUDOR of San Diego, nephew Gary CAMPBELL, niece Jean CARRELL, Kay MARSHALL of St. Louis, and many, many other nieces and nephews. Services were held July 5 at First Presbyterian Church with The Rev. James P. LONGSTREET officiating. Interment was at Wickenburg Cemetery.

Mr. Salow was born April 9, 1913 in Novi, Mich. to Glenn L. and Ethel (Taylor) Salow. He married his first wife, Rowena (Root) Salow in 1934, who passed away in 1982. He married Doris (Knapp) Salow in 1984; she died in 1998. He was employed by the city of Farmington Hills, Northville and Novi City, and Pontiac Motors, as an electrical inspector. He retired in 1970. Survivors include his stepsons Larry (Gilda) Knapp of Florida and Verl (Val) Knapp of Ida, Mich.; stepdaughter Beverly (Merlyn) Knapp of Florida; sister-in-law Vern Risner of Michigan; four step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; cousins Ronald Salow and Mary L. Taylor of Novi; and nephews Marvin Risner of Michigan, Ardenna Palmer of Tennessee, Lois Matthews of Michigan, Darlene Hardwick of Tennessee, Leona Risner of Michigan, and Liotta Jacobs of Clayton. Services will be Wednesday, June 30 at the Capaul Funeral Home in Clayton, Mich. Burial will follow in the Oakland Hill Cemetery in Novi, Mich. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg.

J.E. “SLICK” SAMSILL, 85, passed away at home surrounded by his family, after a short courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Seymore, Texas, on May 5, 1923 and moved to Arizona at the age of 15 where he met and married Freda Chastain. They were married for 66 years and had six children. Slick worked for Hopper Truck Lines for many years, hauling cattle throughout Arizona to many ranches. He was a livestock inspector for over 20 years rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He supervised seven inspectors in northwestern Arizona. In 1970 during his time with the livestock board he co-founded the Law Enforcement Rodeo Association, which is still going today. In addition to this association, Slick put on rough-stock riding schools and jackpot team ropings at his arena in Mesa. He was always there to lend a hand to any young cowboy, whether it be letting them borrow a rope horse or pulling a bull rope. He judged many of the junior rodeos that he took his kids to during the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. Slick was also a member of the Turtles Rodeo Association. Slick managed many of the largest of Arizona cattle ranches including The Double Circles, Triangle M and the Bar D to mention a few. Slick will always be remembered for his honesty, integrity and hard working loyalty. He was so much to so many.
He is preceded in death by his parents, A.J. and Julia SAMSILL and brother Joe SAMSILL. Slick is survived by his wife Freda; daughters Ann BRIM (Ted), Carol GRIMMETT (Don), Bobbi CULP (Allen), and Darleen PAYNE (Brett); sons John SAMSILL (Susie) and Andrew SAMSILL (Valentina); 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; a sister Modena LANDRESS, and many nieces and nephews. Viewing will be on Wednesday (Sept. 10) from 5 to 8 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes, 7924 N. 59th Ave. Funeral services will be on Thursday (Sept. 11) at 10 a.m. at Southwest Church of Christ, 8720 W. Indian School Rd. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Funeral services were to be held in Sacramento, Calif., Thursday of this week for CHARLES M. SANBORN, 65, of that city who died of a heart attack there Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Sanborn was the brother of Maureen SANBORN of Station and of the late Howard SANBORN of Wickenburg. Burial was to take place in Minneapolis, Minn. Surviving, in addition to the Station sister, are the widow, Jane; and another sister, Mary COOLIDGE of Clearwater, Florida.

Death Summons HOWARD S. SANBORN
Funeral arrangements were pending Thursday for HOWARD S. SANBORN, widely known winter resident of Wickenburg, who died in his sleep at his home in Rochester, Minn., Tuesday night. He had gone to Rochester on a business trip last Sunday and was expected back this weekend. Although he had not been in the best of health over a period of years, Mr. Sanborn had seemed to be feeling better than usual this winter and the news of his sudden death came as a shock to this community where he had spent his winters since 1944. He built his large home, off the Prescott highway, in 1946, and for two winters prior to that he lived at the Diamond G Ranch. Mr. Sanborn was born February 8, 1893, in Maquoketa, Iowa, but he spent most of his life in Minnesota where he was president of the Rochester Baking Co. He had been semi-retired the past few years. Mr. Sanborn helped organize and was a charter member of the Desert Caballeros. He was also a member of the Rochester Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife. Evelyn, a daughter, Patricia and son Mike, of Wickenburg and a son Robert of Rochester. Three grandchildren also survive. A sister, Miss Maurine Sanborn, is a resident of Stanton, Ariz. Another sister, Mrs. H. H. COOLIDGE resides in Clearwater, Florida, and a brother, C. M. SANBORN, is a resident of Sacramento, Calif. Mrs. Sanborn left by plane for Rochester Thursday. The family has requested no flowers and has suggested that instead, friends may wish to contribute to their favorite charity in memory of Mr. Sanborn.

Funeral services for HOWARD S. SANBORN, well known Wickenburg winter resident and prominent Rochester, Minnesota, business man, who passed away in the latter city February 28, were held last Saturday after noon at 2 o'clock in the Episcopal Church in Rochester. Mrs. SANBORN, who was called from Wickenburg by the sudden death of her husband, returned here Wednesday morning by plane. She left Rochester Monday and was detained enroute by bad weather.

Emmett Sanders has returned from Lawton, Oklahoma, where he was called at the death of his mother, Mrs. SUSAN SANDERS. The 72-year-old woman died suddenly in her home there September 4. Funeral services were conducted September 8 in Lawton.

Funeral services for Mrs. DAISY SANDERS, former resident, were held in the Wickenburg Chapel Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Robert L. Jenkins, Baptist minister, officiating. Burial was in the Wickenburg Cemetery. Mrs. Sanders, who lived here in the 30’s died January 27 in San Bernardino, California. She was 72 years old.

We have lost a great man, and have gained a great angel. ROBERT MYERS (BOBBY) SANDERS passed away in his sleep on Sept. 26. He was born in Wickenburg, Ariz., on Oct. 13, 1960. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his wife of 24 years Joanne L. Sanders of Eerieville, N.Y.; sons Robert Nicholas of Glenmora, Louisiana; Mike Kent Isaacs and wife Jen of Liverpool, N.Y.; and Douglas Aubrey and wife Gayleen of Safford, Ariz.; parents Robert and Elaine Sanders of Wickenburg, Ariz.; sister Karan Hoskin and husband Harvey of Glenmora, La.; brothers Jon Everet and wife Cathy of Williams, Ariz.; and Keith Alan and wife Linae of Bellevue, Neb.; grandchildren Kyle and Katelynn of Safford, Ariz.; Erin, Macey, and Bryce of Glenmora, La. He had several nieces and nephews who will miss "Uncle Bob." He had more friends than the sky has stars. He was preceded in death by his grandparents John and Lois Myers of Glenmora, La.; and Emmett (Sandy) Sanders of Wickenburg, Ariz. Services were held at First Southern Baptist Church in Wickenburg.

JOHN SAPWELL, SR. was born to Bernice and Andy Sapwell on March 28, 1935 in Blythe, Calif. He lived in Blythe until his early teens, then moved to Wickenburg to join his mother and siblings. John attended Wickenburg High School and after, worked in the manganese mines until he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served for two years and was released with an honorable discharge. Shortly after his discharge, he moved to Sunnyvale, Calif., where he worked at a store called CMA and also dug swimming pools. About 1969, John found his calling for a career and became a machinist. He was very successful at machining, working his way to the top. He was a manager and lead inspector. John retired in 1990 from his machinist job. Then in 1992 he and his wife Sharon moved back to Congress, Ariz. John had many interests. He liked hunting, fishing, old hot rods, woodworking, ammo reloading, prospecting for gold, and even just taking a ride out "in the hills," as he called them. John was a very loving man. He was a good husband, dad, grandpa, and brother. John passed away on June 2, 2005 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. He is preceded in death by his dad Andy Sapwell, mom Bernice Villa, stepfather Ray Villa, and sister Peggy Cramer. He is survived by his wife Sharon Sapwell of Congress, Ariz., son John Sapwell, Jr. of Oakdale, Calif., daughter Elizabeth Boer of Modesto, Calif., and grandchildren Morgan Boer and Andrew Sapwell. He is also survived by his brother Gary Sapwell and Arnold Sapwell, and a sister Linda Villa, all of Wickenburg, Ariz. We all love you very much and you will be missed greatly. May you rest in peace.

JOHN ANDREW SAPWELL, SR. was born to Andrew and Bernice Sapwell on March 28, 1935 in Blythe, Calif., and lived there until his early teens. He then moved to Wickenburg, Ariz., rejoining his mother and siblings and attended Wickenburg High School. After high school, John married Sharon Baker and went to work in the manganese mines by Box Canyon. It wasn't long until Uncle Sam drafted John into the U.S. Army, where he served two years and was honorably discharged. After discharge, he moved to Sunnyvale, Calif., where he worked at a store called CMA and later ventured into swimming pool excavation and construction. About 1969, still in California, John found his career path in machining, working his way up to manager and lead inspector. John retired in 1990 as a machinist and in 1992 he and his wife Sharon moved back to Congress, Ariz. John had many hobbies and interests. He loved the time spent with his wife Sharon and their children. He loved hunting with his brothers, reloading, fishing, woodworking, prospecting for gold, making homemade tamales at Christmas with his sister and just taking rides "out in the hills." Although John had not been well for quite a while, he became critically ill very suddenly and put up a valiant fight during his month-long stay in ICU at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. John, a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2005 surrounded by his loving wife and family. John was preceded in death by his father Andrew "Andy" Sapwell, mother Bernice (Sapwell) Villa, stepfather Raymond "Ray" Villa, sister Peggy (Sapwell) Cramer and stepdaughter Claudia Sharp. He is survived by his wife Sharon Sapwell of Congress, Ariz., four children: daughter Cheryl Ann Vernon of Grants Pass, Ore.; daughter Elizabeth Boer of Modesto, Calif.; son John Sapwell Jr. of Oakdale, Calif.; and stepdaughter Kris Kinsey of Congress, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Gary "Squeak" Sapwell and Arnie Sapwell, and sister Linda Villa, all of Wickenburg, Ariz. A memorial service celebrating John's life was held on June 7 at the Community Alliance Church in Wickenburg, with a touching eulogy delivered by Pastor Dave Hunter. No one can take John's place in our hearts, and we will miss him terribly, but we take comfort in knowing that John is now breathing easy, free to fish and to hunt, where there are no limits on catches or on quail. And when he comes to the end of his day, he will find solace in Christ and rest in the outstretched arms of his mother, who has waited patiently for her son to come home. JAMES (JIM) SAUER, 78, died Nov. 2 in Surprise, Ariz. He was born in Sheldon, Iowa, and had six brothers and one sister. Jim moved to Fullerton, Calif., in 1940. He was inducted into the Army in 1950, and his career included time in Japan and Korea. He finished in the National Guard, retiring after 22 years as Lt. Colonel. Jim was employed for 50 years with Bradford/Willdan Associates serving as a civil engineer and land surveyor. In 1997, Jim retired in Wickenburg, Ariz., where he loved to golf with his buddies Ray and RD. Fishing was also a favorite hobby. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Elks Lodge. Jim will be greatly missed by all his friends and loved ones. He is survived by wife Mary; children Stephanie (Steve), Gary, Keri (Brian); step-children Tony, Mark, and Todd (Cristina); grandchildren include Shannon, Samantha, Evan, Cleyton, Zackery, Taylor, Aubrey and Mia; great-grandchildren Hannah and Hailey; and surviving brothers Richard (Leona) and Howard (Mary). Interment will be held with military honors at Riverside National Cemetery in California at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home and Crematory.

Father Of Chief Savage Summoned
Chief of Police Richard SAVAGE received word Monday of the death of his father, W. E. SAVAGE, which occurred at 8:30 o'clock that morning in East Chicago, Illinois, in the plant of the U. S. Gypsum Co., where Mr. Savage had been employed for the past 10 years. Death was due to a heart attack. Mr. Savage had previously been in excellent health. He was 69 years of age. A resident of Knox, Ind., Mr. Savage commuted daily between his home and his work in East Chicago.
Funeral Thursday
Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon at the old home in Sullivan, Ind. Mr. Savage is survived by his I wife, Bertha and eight children:, Richard and Mrs. David CARTER of Wickenburg; Walter of Phoenix; Mrs. Addie HIGGINS, Bicknell, Ind.; Mrs. Jessie CLARK, Fairbanks, Ind.; Mrs. Rudy WILLETT, Connersville, Ind.; Harold of Sullivan and John of Knox. Twenty grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Savage visited in Wickenburg during World War II when is son Richard was with the Armed Forces in the South Pacific. The local police chief last visited his father in Knox a year ago last June.

Savage Youth Dies Fighting Okinawa Japs
Parents Here Receive Tragic News in Wire From War Dept.
Fighting with the 17th Infantry of the 7th Division on Okinawa, PFC. GORDON A. SAVAGE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett G. SAVAGE of Wickenburg, was killed in action on June 15, a tragic telegram from the War Department to his parents her received Monday of this week, said. The telegram was from Adjutant General J. A. ULIO and gave no details, although promising the grief stricken parents a “confirming letter follow the wire. Although not long a resident of Wickenburg, Gordon Savage made a host of friends while living here and the news oh death in the fierce action against the fanatical Japs on Okinawa, saddened and shocked the community. Born May 27, 1926, Gordon entered the service from Wickenburg on September 21 of last year, trained at Camp Roberts and went overseas on February 18 of this year. He saw service in Hawaii and on the Mariannas before going with his regiment to Okinawa where it was thrown immediately into battle. He was an automatic rifleman and those duties took him far out in front of the balance of the troops to help clear the way for the following infantry. His last letter to his mother, reporting that he was in good health and spirits after a short period at a rest camp, was dated June 7, just eight days before he fell in battle. Gordon was raised in Humbolt and Mayer, attending the schools in both of those Arizona towns. Upon moving to Wickenburg about a year and half ago with his parents, he had planned to enroll in the Wickenburg High School, but gave that up over a difficult involving his credits. In addition to his parents, the young soldier is survived by a sister Doris, age 20 and a brother, Duane, 11.

He was a Korean War veteran, active member of IDPA and the Wickenburg Gun Club. He leaves behind his mother Laura S. Brown; three children Cindy Tawes, Port Norris, N.J., Travis and Scott Sayre, Crisfield, Md.; six grandchildren Brittany, Nichole, Jacob, Ruby, Justin and Jeremy. No services are scheduled.

Rites Friday for Pioneer Resident
Funeral services for ROY SAYRE will be conducted in the Wickenburg Chapel at 11 a. m. today (Friday) by the Rev. James WILSON. Mr. Sayre a pioneer resident of Wickenburg who had lived in Skull Valley for the past two years, died in a Prescott hospital Wednesday morning. Burial will be in the Wickenburg Cemetery. Mr. Sayre was born in Colorado April 7, 1882, and moved to Wickenburg with his parents when he was 14 years old. The family first lived in a house at the corner of Tegner and Yavapai Streets where St. Anthony's Catholic Church is now located The father died in 1912 and his is the oldest marked grave in Wickenburg Cemetery.

SAYRE Rites Were Held Last Friday
Funeral services for ROY SAYRE were held in the Wickenburg Chapel last Friday. Burial was in the Wickenburg Cemetery. Mr. Sayre, 80, of Skull Valley, formerly of Wickenburg, died in a Prescott hospital December 20. Mr. SAYRE was a miner and lived and worked throughout the state at various times. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Nadine BUCKINGHAM of Great Falls, Mont.; two sons, Pat SAYRE of Skull Valley and Leroy SAYRE of Santa Ana, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Maude DUNN of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Mrs. Charles ROUSE of LaPuente, Calif., and eight grandchildren.

WILLIAM H. SCHMIDT, of Phoenix and formerly of Wickenburg, died Feb. 2. He was 71. Mr. SCHMIDT was born in Hoboken, N.J. Mr. Schmidt grew up in Wickenburg and lived here many years before moving to Phoenix. He was a retired. He was a retired APS serviceman and a World War II Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Ernestine, also formerly of Wickenburg ; daughter Beverly LEVAND, Holly BREWER, and Rhonda LAWSON; Sons William and Ronald; sister Evelyn BOSWICK; 18 grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren. Funeral services have been held. Sunset Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

WILLIAM W. (BILL) SCHOLL, a former longtime Wickenburg resident, died at his home in Phoenix earlier this year. Mr. Scholl, 76, died March 28, 2001. . SCHOLL was born Jan. 30, 1925 in Winterset, Iowa. He worked for many years for Arizona Public Service Co. in Wickenburg, and later operated Scholl's Gas Service Co. in Wickenburg. Survivors include two sons, James W. Scholl of Tempe, and Patrick W. Scholl and daughter-in-law Cindy Scholl of Webb City, Mo.; a daughter, Kathy Franklin and son-in-law Butch Franklin of Tempe; and a sister, Grace Green of Coldwater, Miss. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Scholl, in 1996. Private services were held in Webb City, Mo.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon of this week at the Wickenburg Chapel for ERNEST E. SCHOLZ, a resident of Wickenburg since 1941, who passed away Friday, April 6, at his home of a heart ailment. Burial followed in the Wickenburg Cemetery. Mr. SCHOLZ was born in Germany February 19, 1883. He came to the United States in 1909 and was a rancher at Flagstaff and Parks, Arizona, before retiring and moving to Wickenburg. Surviving are the wife, Harriet and two sons, William G. SCHOLZ of Parks and Emil E. SCHOLZ of Williams, Ariz.

MYLES J. SCHRADER, 92, of Wickenburg passed away peacefully on Aug. 16. He was born at home in Macedon, N.Y., Dec. 31, 1915. Survivors include first cousins Pearl BAUER of Macedon, N.Y., and Ina BAUER of Canandaigua, N.Y., several nieces and nephews, niece-in-law Jeanette Jones, with whom he had resided for many years, grandnieces Kay JONES, Amy BURGESS SMITH, Brandy BURGESS and grandnephews Roland JONES, Gary BURGESS and Greg BURGESS. Myles was a retired farmer, part-time cook and full-time Green Bay Packers fan. He was beloved by his family and friends and will be sorely missed. JOHN H. SCHRADER SR., 71, passed away on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital in Sun City West, Ariz. Born on Nov. 6, 1932 to Henry Schrader and May Morris in the Bronx, N.Y., he was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He grew up in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., where he met Agnes Murphy, his loving wife of 48 years when they were in the eighth grade in 1945. He graduated from Ithaca College in 1955. He is preceded in death by his sister Mary Jean Schlosser of Florida. He is survived by his wife Agnes, Wickenburg, Ariz.; daughter Debbie (Harold) Straut, Nanuet, N.Y.; son John (Marlene) Schrader, Jr., Pleasantville, N.Y.; brother Jim (Marina), Dover Plains, N.Y.; grandchildren Brianna, Megan, Eva and David. John and Agnes ran Beech Hill Farm, a successful horse boarding stable in Pleasantville, N.Y. beginning in 1962. They have enjoyed their retirement in Wickenburg, Ariz. since 1991, and the family horse business has since been run by John Jr. and wife Marlene. He was a 26-year member of Pocantico Hills, New York Volunteer Fire Department and a loyal member of the Desert Caballeros for 22 years, since 1982 and a member of the Board of Directors, holding the office of Secretary-Treasurer. He was also a member of The Desert Stags. Services were held at Frey Funeral Home on Saturday, April 24, 2004. Services will be held at a later date at Beecher Funeral Home on Bedford Road in Pleasantville, N.Y. Interment will be at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, North Tarrytown, N.Y. located adjacent to the Rockefeller Trails where he first began riding at the age of 5 and continued to ride for many years. Former Resident Dies in Bagdad
JAMES W. SCHULTHEIS, purchasing agent for the Bagdad Copper Corporation and a former resident of Wickenburg, died November 17 in his office in Bagdad of a heart attack. He was 49 years old. Funeral services were conducted in Prescott November 20. Mr. Schultheis, who came to Arizona in 1928 from Kansas, was a federal Civil Service employee in Washington, D. C., Baltimore, Md., and in Flagstaff. When he resigned from government work he moved to Wickenburg where he operated a Richfield Station for a few years prior to his employment by the Bagdad mining firm. Surviving are the widow and two sons, James Daniel and Victor William.

Rites for Mrs. Schultz to be Saturday morning
Funeral services for Mrs. ANNA SCHULTZ, 83, Morristown area resident since 1925, will be held in the Wickenburg Chapel at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday). Burial will be in the Morristown cemetery. Mrs. Schultz died Wednesday evening in San Rafael, Calif., where she was visiting. Five daughters and one son survive.

Rites In Wenden For FRED SCHULER
Funeral services for FRED SCHULER, prominent resident of Salome, were held in the LDS Church in Wenden last Tuesday afternoon with Mel HANCOCK of Wenden officiating. Members of the Elks Lodge of Parker had charges of graveside rites in the Wenden Cemetery. Mr. Schuler was stricken while in a cotton field of his farm at 5:30 p. m. Friday of last week and died suddenly. Born in Chickasha, Okla., December 24, 1902, Mr. Schuler came to Arizona in 1929 and engaged in construction work before settling in Salome in 1939. In 1951 he was credited with drilling the first irrigation well in the Salome area which paved the way for the agricultural development of that area. He owned a garage, restaurant, service station and farm. When the community purchased the Wickenburg Hospital from Dr. Floyd Bralliar 15 years ago, Mrs. Schuler helped raise funds for the purchase and served as director of the hospital for a number of years. He was president of the Salome Lions club when that organization observed the first Dick Wick hall Day 16 years ago. Survivors included the widow, Eva; three brothers, Charles of Petersburg, Texas; Joe, his twin of Lubbock, Texas; and Red of Seminole, Texas; and one sister, Mrs. Anna Mae HICKS of Lubbock, Texas.

Mrs. MARY SCHURING, Former Resident Of Wickenburg Summoned
Mrs. MARY A. SCHURING, a resident of Wickenburg until a few months ago, passed away May 3 at a hospital in Phoenix where she had been a patient for several weeks. She was 78 years of age and was born in Denmark, coming to the United States when 11 years old. She moved to Phoenix in 1920 and to Wickenburg about seven years ago. Her husband, William Schuring, passed away here several years ago. Mrs. SCHURING was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frank J. ROSETTA of Osage, Kansas, where the body was taken for funeral services and burial Tuesday.

California Visitor Dies At Local Ranch
RUDOLPH WILLIAM SCHWENK of Santa Barbara, California, a guest at Kay EI Bar Ranch, died at the ranch August 8. The body has been sent to Santa Barbara for funeral services and burial. Mr. Schwenk was born in Dresden, Germany, May 3, 1903. He had been in Wickenburg just a week. A brother who was here stated he had been ill for many years. The widow, mother, three brothers and one sister survive.

GEORGE (WIL) WILSON SCOTT was born April 6, 1928 at the Highland Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., to George and Florence SCUDAMORE, where he joined two sisters. After graduation from high school, Wil got his associate’s degree from Rochester Business Institute with degrees in Business Administration, Accounting, and Retail. Fresh out of college he got a job at Rochester Distillation Products Inc., as an accounting clerk for one year before joining the U.S. Coast Guard in August of 1946. He served for two years, receiving an honorable discharge. Then he worked for Johnson Tobacco Company in Rochester as retail division manager. After two years, he reenlisted in the Coast Guard in February of 1951 and received a second honorable discharge in August 1954, as well as two decorations: Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Wil married his high school sweetheart Lois in 1949, and to that union were born two children. He tragically lost all three of them in a car accident as his wife was taking the children to school one morning. At some point later, his pastor told him that he needed a fresh new start because there were too many memories of his wife and children in Rochester. So Wil moved from the northeastern part of the United States first to McAllen, Texas, in the mid 1950s, changing his name as well as his location. It was there he met Pat MARTIN, and they were married in 1967. Together they raised one daughter Michelle, currently of Chino Valley, Ariz. Michelle has three sons - Jason JENSON of Wickenburg, Alex of Phoenix, and Joey of Chino Valley. In the mid 1970s, the family moved to Arizona, first to Mesa for a short time, then on to Wickenburg. While here in Wickenburg, Wil worked in construction, owned the “Hungry Vulture” restaurant, and managed the Foxworth Galbrath Lumberyard. Wil was a member of the Wickenburg Rotary and served as president in 1978-79 and was Rotarian of the Year in 1982. Wil, as a true Wickenburg resident, road on the Desert Caballeros Ride for many years. He was the “Trail Boss BMR” on the 1983 ride, and “Remudero of the Year” in 1987. He was honored in 1987 by the Wickenburg Wranglers as Sports Fan of the Year. Wil had been a member of the Elks Lodge in Wickenburg as well as in McAllen, Texas. While there he rose to “Exalted Ruler” of the McAllen Lodge.
After 27 years of marriage, Pat was diagnosed with cancer and preceded Wil in death in 1994. After retiring, Wil served the Episcopal diocese, traveling the state as an auditor and served the church as vestry treasurer, once again using his accounting abilities. Wil then married Rita GUTHRIE-JOHNSON on April 6, 1999. Together they shared some amazing adventures like traveling to the four corners of the United States in their Toyota Chinook. Together they maintained the Rose Gardens at the Episcopal and Mount Hope churches. In 2005 Rita was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and preceded Wil in death in May of 2007. In July of 2007, Wil began to display moments of dementia that over the past year grew more frequent. It was later discovered that a heart problem was causing oxygen deprivation to his brain. Having lost three wives and a host of wonderful memories, Wil stated that he had lived a full life and was ready to meet Jesus, so he refused any major heart procedures. And as was his desire, he passed on to his eternal reward on July 25 at the age of 80 in Surprise, Ariz. A memorial service and reception is to be held on Aug. 8 at Mount Hope Assembly of God church in Wickenburg at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements have been made by David’s Desert Chapel Funeral Home of Wickenburg.

JAMES "JIMMY" SCOTT of Scott's Junction died Jan. 3 at Del. E. Webb Memorial Hospital in Sun City West. Mr. Scott was born March 22, 1928 in Tulsa, Okla. He had lived in Arizona for the past 40 years. Jimmy had many passions in life, from car salesman to mechanic. He also enjoyed restoring cars as well as racing them. His greatest passion was owning and operating Scott's Junction Wrecking and Towing since 1961. Along with his work, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and caring for his dogs. He will be missed dearly by those who knew him and loved him throughout his life. Survivors include his companion Linda Scott; daughters Cindy Roer of Wikieup, Linda Kekic of Freemont, Calif., and Sandra Tyndell of Atlanta, Georgia; sister Judy; brothers Ronald, John, Jerry and Tom; granddaughter Jennifer; grandsons Tye, Jacob, Arron, Michael, John, David, Keith, Kenny and Zachary; uncle and aunt Joe and Madeline Coy; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Jan. 8) at Brown's Wickenburg Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. George Thornton will officiate. Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 7 at Brown's Wickenburg Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Brown's Wickenburg Funeral Home handled all the arrangements.

RITA MARY SCOTT was born December 29, 1926 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, to AIMEE GAUDETTE. Throughout her life she lived in many different places and viewed each one as a new adventure. She lived in Sepulveda and Granada Hills, Calif., and Mulberry, Kans., but her home since 1989 here in Wickenburg, Ariz. She married Robert Boulanger in 1948 and from that union had three children, Wayne (1948), Denise (1954) and Bruce (1955). In 1978 she married John Johnston who preceded her in death in 1993. She married Gene Gutherie in the summer of 1996, who preceded her in death in the winter of the same year, 1996. In 1999 she met and married George William Scott and they had many adventures enjoying retirement together, be it a road trip in the Toyota Chinook to Massachusetts and back, or just tending roses at the Episcopal and Mount Hope Assemble churches in Wickenburg. On May 30, 2007 Rita fell asleep and woke to find herself in the arms of Jesus in Surprise, Ariz., at the age of 80. She is survived by her husband of eight years Wil Scott of Wickenburg; children Wayne, Bruce and Denise; step-son Rich Johnston (Michelle); grandchildren Tracie, Sean, Paul, Josh, David, Eric and Jason. Rita was a faithful member at Mount Hope Assembly since 1992, and services were there on Monday (June 4) with Pastor Duane Middleton officiating. CHARLES SYLVESTER SEAMAN of Circle City died Jan. 28 in Circle City. He was 84. Mr. Seaman was born Jan. 5, 1912 in Winona, Missouri. He had lived in Arizona for 60 years,coming here from Missouri. Mr. Seaman married the former Lorene KOLLER on March 7, 1934. A graduate of Bolivar Teachers College, Mr. SEAMAN owned and operated several successful businesses throughout his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing golf. He and his wife also enjoyed spending time at their home in Summit, Utah. Mr. Seaman is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorene of Circle City; daughter and son-in-law Vivian and George WILKINS of Wickenburg; sisters-in-law Audrey TAYLOR and Audrey SEAMAN both of Mesa; brother and sister-in-law Eugene and Sally SEAMAN of Mt. WILLIAM WALTER SEARCY, 78 years young, was born to Amelia Ann and Charles Delbert Searcy in Wynniwood, Oklahoma, on Sept. 1, 1929, and went to be with our Lord on May 29, 2008. Bill leaves his beloved wife of 25 years Ada and stepchildren Nancy and Andrew ANDERSON, Eddie ROGERS, Ada Jean ROGERS, Pamela CHRISTY, and Jimmy ROGERS, 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. They all loved him dearly and will miss his funny stories. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Geneva SHULTZ, and brother James Andrew SEARCY. Bill was raised and educated in Shafter, California, and graduated from high school in 1947. Shortly thereafter he joined the army, then went into the reserves. After leaving the military, Bill went to work for Santa Fe Railroad as a lineman in communications. He moved to Wickenburg from California for a short time and settled in Aguila in 1972. Bill retired after 37 years with the railroad in November, 1989. There will be a simple memorial service at the Aguila Bible Community Church on First Street at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7. ANNA JANE SEAWRIGHT, age 82, passed away June 1. Memorial services will be held on Friday (June 13) at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Anna Jane was born Nov. 29, 1925 in Beaumont, Texas, to Dennis O. ROLLER and Naomi ROWZEE ROLLER. She was raised there until age 10 when the family moved to Arizona. She attended and graduated from Wickenburg High School. Following her schooling she began working for Central Arizona Light and Power Company which later became Arizona Public Service. She worked there for more than 30 years. Anna Jane was active in the Professional Business Women’s Organization and volunteered at the Red Cross as well as volunteering at the Desert Caballeros Museum. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church from its onset and served as a deacon and an elder in the church as well as singing in the choir and serving in various other church positions. Anna Jane was a pilot and a member of the World War II Glider Pilots Association. She was preceded in death by her husband Col. Jack Seawright on August 14, 2005, and will be interred with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. She is survived by stepdaughters Jean FRIEDL (John) of Tucson, Ariz.; Nancy PRICE (Ron) of Derwood, Maryland; Barbara REIMER (Russ) of Mesa, Ariz.; brothers and sisters-in-law John Richard and Marie ROLLER of Wickenburg, William and Sue ROLLER of Phoenix, Robert and Susan ROLLER of Chandler; and several nieces and nephews. Former Resident Is Summoned On Coast
ENOCH SELLBERG, a former resident of Wickenburg, passed at is home in Inglewood, Calif., January 11 after a long illness. While residing here, Mr. Sellberg was mill foreman of the Winslow Gold Mining Co. at Yarnell. He also helped construct the mill at the Bagdad mine for the Southwestern Engineering Co. His children attended the Wickenburg schools. Surviving are the widow, Margaret of Inglewood; a son, Thomas SELLBERG of Glendale, Calif., and three daughters, Margaret SELLBERG and Betty Ann HILL of Inglewood and Virginia Long of Phoenix. Two granddaughters also survive.

LAST RITES FOR HEROIC MOTHER AT MESA SAT.
Mrs. MAE SELLER, Victim of Tragic Accident on Mountain Road; Tossed Baby Girl to Safety.
The host of friends of Mrs. MAE OLIVER SELLERS, shocked and saddened by her tragic death Wednesday, were to pay their last respects this afternoon as the remains lay in state from 3 to 6 o’clock at the Coffinger mortuary. Tonight the body will be taken to Mesa, where funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, with interment in the Mesa cemetery. Death lashed suddenly at a mother and daughter on steep Wade hill, 10 miles east on the Constellation road shortly after noon Wednesday but mother instinct and mother sacrifice were even quicker and Mrs. Mae SELLERS tossed her child to safety while she herself was caught. When Norman HANSON, stage driver, came upon the spot, little Betty SELLERS, age 2, was sitting by the body of her mother, pinned beneath the automobile, patting the cold face and sobbing "Mother’s asleep, mother’s asleep." Mother and daughter had started to visit R. P. SELLERS, father-in-law about 11 o’clock Wednesday morning. Mrs. Sellers was driving the father-in-law's car, an Essex roadster. Hanson, who with his wife and two children had been delivering the mail to Constellation, passed the spot at 12:30. Returning at 1 o’clock they came upon the pitiful scene. Hanson, after ascertaining that life was extinct, at once turned back and brought Mr. Sellers and his son Tom, who lived a quarter mile away from the scene. They jacked up the overturned car and pulled the body of Mrs. Sellers from beneath it. While Tom remained with the body Hanson and Mr. Sellers rushed to Wickenburg with the baby. Highway Patrolman Jack PETERSON and Judge Bob STORNS were notified. The sheriff of Yavapai county, Bob ROBERTS, and Justice of the Peace John CONNERY of Congress were summoned and the official party went to the scene of the accident, accompanied by the Coffinger ambulance and the Wales wrecking car.
Babe Falls to Safety
At the scene a coroner’s jury was impaneled and an investigation conducted. As far as could be determined, Mrs. Sellers was descending the hill, where the road is very steep, dangerous and crooked, when the car apparently began to get out of control because of loose grave or brake failure. The mother either tossed the babe from the car and attempted to follow, or tried to get out with the child in her arms. The car rode up the steep cliff a short distance and then fell back on it side, pinning Mrs. Sellers beneath it on the road and crushing her across the chest. The baby sustained bruises and a slight cut on the head. The car was practically undamaged, and when tested out by Dick WALES, was found to have fair brakes. The gear shift lever was in reverse when it stopped. A verdict of death by accident was returned. The husband, Clarence SELLERS, local agent for the Standard Oil company, went to the scene with the official party and was almost prostrated by the frightful tragedy. Later he rallied and was meeting the shock courageously. The remains were brought to the Coffinger mortuary. Neighbors and friends rallied quickly to the support of the stricken family until relatives could be notified. Mrs. SELLERS was 34 years old,. Besides the baby Betty, there are two other children, Gail 11, and Jimmy, 10 years old. In addition to the immediate family, the father and mother, Mrs. And Mrs. Franklin D. JOHNSON, of Mesa, survive, also a sister, Mrs. Mabel ROSE, of Phoenix and four brothers, Lew, Howard, William and Walter all of Mesa.

JOAN RANDALL SEYBOLD passed away on July, 24 after a brief illness. Memorial services will be held on Thursday (July 31) at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Wickenburg. She was born JOAN MARGARET NORRIS Dec. 19, 1927 to Adelia LAWRENCE and John Patrick NORRIS in New Haven, Connecticut. Joan completed her public education in Branford, Conn., and later attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va., where she met and married James M. RANDALL, her husband of 36 years, on July 12, 1950. For the next 30 years, his jobs as teacher, principal, and superintendent took them to Branford and Madison, Conn.; Little Falls and Guilderland, N.Y.; and finally Wickenburg, Ariz. During that time, they had two daughters, Barbara Jean "Bobbie" in December of 1951 and Sara Elizabeth in 1965. Between those years, she worked as nurse/receptionist for Drs. Blanchard, Rosenthal, and Nickou in their offices in Branford. Always active in civic affairs, at various times she was a Girl Scout leader, an officer of the League of Women Voters and a Rotary Ann in her years in Wickenburg. She was one of the founders of the Wickenburg Habitat for Humanity, was on the Community Hospital Board, as well as Los Caballeros Desert Museum. She started the Life Alert System for the general Wickenburg area, and was a member of the local Photography Club, the Wickenburg Country Club and was very fond of her sisters in P.E.O. and Red Hat Society. She was ordained an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg in 1982, she served two three-year terms on the session. She was also an officer of the Church Property Corporation from 1990 to 2005.
Eight years after the death of her first husband, she met and married the second love of her life, William H. SEYBOLD, formerly of Rochester, N.Y. Although almost 20 years her senior, they were lucky enough to have 15 years of travel, volunteering, Camera Club and golf together before his death exactly one month and two days before her. She is survived by sisters Nancy Gould of Noank, Conn., and Susan McKinlay of Branford, Conn.; daughters Barbara Jean "Bobbie" Randall Brannen and her husband Jerry of Valdez, Alaska, and Sara Randall of Mesa, Ariz.; beloved nephew Kevin RANDALL and wife Nancy of Georgetown, S.C.; beloved niece Jennifer ORF and husband Chris, who were such a support to her in her final months, as always; nieces and nephews John McKINLAY and family of Charlton, Massachusetts; Brad COLLINS and family of New Haven, Conn.; Greg COLLINS and family of Brookline, Mass.; Rachel BROWN and family of Tiverton, R.I.; Sue Gulliver and family of Monrovia, Md.; and great-good friends Jeanette Jones, Dick and Wilma Doud, Ann and Hank BRUBAKER, all of Wickenburg; Nancy and Ken DALLMEYER of San Marcos, Calif.; and many other friends, who shared her joy of life. Born January 8, 1909, WILLIAM H. SEYBOLD was 99 and 1/2 when he passed away June 22. Raised in western Pennsylvania, he was a long-time resident of Rochester, N.Y., before moving to Wickenburg following the death of his first wife Virginia. A former travel agency owner, he and JOAN RANDALL SEYBOLD married in April of 1993, and spent much of their 15 years together exploring the world. A Rotarian for many years, Bill was a former member of the Wickenburg Country Club, and as little as six months ago, was still hitting a few balls with friends. Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg, where a memorial service was held on Tuesday, June 24. He is survived by his loving wife Joan of Wickenburg, and her daughters Bobbie Brannen of Valdez, Alaska, and Sara Randall of Mesa, Ariz. A public memorial service is planned for May 9, in honor of former Surprise Mayor JOAN SHAFER, who passed away earlier this month. The public service will take place at the Surprise Stadium, located at 15960 N. Bullard Avenue at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Mayor Shafer’s family has requested that donations be made to DreamCatcher Park, the city’s ball field designed for athletes with special needs. Shafer considered DreamCatcher Park one of her proudest achievements during her time as mayor. DENVER J. SHAFFER gladly entered Heaven on Saturday, June 11, 2005. He was born in Centralia, Wash., on February 10, 1924. He spent three years in the Army Air Force during World War II. He entered Pacific Bible College (now Warner Pacific) in Portland, Ore., in January 1946 to prepare to be a minister in the Church of God. He also attended Anderson College in Indiana, receiving the Master of Divinity Degree. He pastured churches in Minnesota, Idaho and Oregon before retiring. He and his wife Idell, who survives him, moved to Arizona near Wickenburg in 1997. He will be missed by many friends at North Ranch. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Congress. Burial will be at the Willamette national Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

He was preceded in. death by his wife, Billie SHAHAN, in 1986; his son, Alan SHAHAN, in 1972; and his companion, Jacqueline HICKS in 1995. THOMAS SHALLAH was a 15-year Wickenburg resident. He passed away at his Wickenburg home on Aug. 9. Tom was born in Boston, Mass., on Jan. 17, 1931 to Victoria and Michael SHALLAH. He is survived by his sisters Mary FRONGELLO, Barbara SABBAG and Alyce McLAUGHLIN; his seven children Michelle, Lisa, Michael, Dawn Marie, Victoria, Sam, and Cassandra; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brothers Sam, George and Jack Shallah. During his Boston years he worked in the family grocery store after school. Then, after graduation from high school, he ran the business with his brother Jack. Tom, his wife Dorothea and children moved to California where he worked for a trucking firm as a driver. He discovered Wickenburg while hauling to Phoenix and Nevada from Los Angeles, and thought he would like to retire to this nice little town. Loving country western music as he did and western clothes made it easy for Tom to fit in. Tom was very active in the Elks organization and held the office of Tiler for many years. He was a true Braves fan all the way back to the Boston Braves and he never missed a NASCAR race. He would always ask “is there anything you need?” and “what can I get you?” He brought smiles to the faces of everyone he came to know. He will be greatly missed by the employees and patrons at his favorite hangouts, but he will never be forgotten! His opinions were many and his heart was gold.

Mr. LESLIE G. SHARP, age 73, passed away in Surprise, Ariz., on Nov. 16. Funeral services will be held Friday (Nov. 21) at 10 a.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church with Pastor Dean Stanley officiating. Leslie was born and raised in Phoenix and graduated from North High. He later served in the U.S. Navy. He began working as a brakeman for the Santa Fe Railroad in 1957 and made conductor in 1965. He worked for Amtrak from 1984 to 1987 and later returned to work for Santa Fe Railroad. He retired after 41 years of service and moved here to Wickenburg from Winslow. One of his most memorable experiences during his career was riding a derailment in a caboose. Off the job, Leslie enjoyed fishing. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church. Leslie is survived by his wife Betty of Wickenburg; daughters Carrie Olivar of Gallup, N.M.; and Sue Ann Elliott of Springerville, sons Gary Sharp of El Segundo, Calif.; Jim Sharp of Mesa, Wayne Sharp of Bosque Farm, N.M.; and R. Scott Sharp of Phoenix; brother Robert Sharp of Phoenix; grandchildren Rachael, Amber, Randy, James, Robert, Christina, Nicholette, Stephanie, Ashley, Ryan, Fred III, and Zachary; great-grandchildren Aloni and Chase. He was preceded in death by parents Floyd and Lillian Sharp and a brother Floyd Sharp, Jr. Interment will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Funeral services for Mrs. KATHRYN D. SHEFFIELD, 68, who died in her home at Yarnell Thursday of last week, were held Monday morning. The Rev. Scott SIEGLE conducted rites in the Yarnell Community Church and the Order of Eastern Star conducted graveside rites in the Wickenburg Cemetery. Born in Mason, Texas, Mrs. Sheffield moved to Arizona 45 years ago. She resided in Yarnell for 13 years. Her father, Major DOOLE, patrolled the Gila route for the Union forces in the 1860’s. Her husband John T. SHEFFIELD of Yarnell, survives.

ERVIN J. SHERBUTTE, of Wickenburg, died Feb. 23 in Wickenburg. He was 85. Mr. Sherbutte was born Jan. 6, 1911 in Canada. He had lived in Arizona for 10 years, coming here from Michigan. Mr. Sherbutte was a boiler operator for Morton Salt in Marysville, Mich., until his retirement in 1970. He was a member of the American legion and VFW in Michigan. He is survived by his wife of 31, years, Alexandria, of Wickenburg; step-daughters Elizabeth Lixie of Gaylord. Mich. and Ann EVANS of Lancaster, Ohio; stepsons Paul KRASNUIK of Tucson and Stephen KRASNUIK of Midland, Mich.; sisters Bunah GINTHER of Wickenburg, Marie MORRISON of St. Clair, Mich., and Betty CHAMBERS of Port Huron, Mich.; brother Jack FOSTER of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, March 1 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic church. Fr. John Vogt will officiate. Interment will be held in Michigan at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Sherbutte's name to a charity of one's choice. Frey Funeral Home and Cremation Service was in charge of all arrangements.

Word has been received here of the death, on February 17, of L. Z. SHERMAN, a former winter visitor here and who made many friends in this community. Mr. Sherman, who was 65 years of age, died at the home of his daughter, Thailia WESTMORELAND, in Fowlerville, Michigan. A son, Leo Z. SHERMAN of Phoenix, also survives.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Friday morning in the Baptist Church in Parker for MRS. JUANITA SHONTZ of that city who passed away July 11 in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Phoenix. She was the wife of Charles SHONTZ of Parker, former resident of Wickenburg. The body was brought to the Wickenburg Chapel and then taken to Parker. WILLIAM ORVAL SHRIDE, Bill as he was known to everyone, was born in Phoenix, Ariz., on Oct. 2, 1936. He grew up in Wickenburg, graduating from Wickenburg High in May of 1954. Bill attended the University of Arizona in Tucson and graduated in 1958 with dual engineering degrees. After graduation, he went to work for Square D out of Milwaukee. He also served in the Naval Reserves. Bill continued the Shride tradition of membership in the Masonic Lodge. After leaving Square D, Bill went to work for Cutler Hammer, which became Miner Denver. He then decided to go out on his own and in the early 1970s he started Electro Systems, Inc. (ESI). The electrical engineering and design firm started in the basement of Bill’s Green Mountain home. He then moved to a warehouse in Englewood, back to Lakewood and finally to the current industrial site in west Denver. Bill led a full life and his work was not a job, it was a hobby, which he continued up until the last few days of his life. He traveled throughout the states and even Finland and the Arctic Circle designing and installing controls for everything from airport aviation fuel tanks, railroad bridges, ski lifts and newspapers as well as classified work for the government. When he was in a rehab center 10 days ago, he had one of his employees bring in a table and computer so that he could continue the work he loved so much. Bill met his wife of nearly 50 years, Margaret, in Boulder, Colo., and they were married Aug. 20, 1959. Bill and Margaret discovered their love of beaches and travel later in life. They enjoyed many wonderful trips together to locales including Australia, France, Florida, Hawaii and many Caribbean destinations. They purchased a beach condo on the north shore of the Dominican Republic in the early 1990s, and spent many glorious days together there. In 2001, Bill put his life on hold to care for his beloved wife Margaret who was struggling with COPD. He was steadfast in his devotion to her during the last two years of her life. She preceded him in death by five years. Bill was preceded in death by his mother and dad, Carl and Helen SHRIDE, longtime Wickenburg residents, and his wife Margaret. Bill is survived by daughters Suzie Shride of Lakewood, Colo., and Allison SHRIDE of Franktown, Colo. He also leaves two granddaughters, Sierra and Reyna, and his older sister Betty Lehan Hunter of Gilbert, Ariz. He is also survived by four nephews, Chris, David, Patrick, and Michael LEHAN. Bill was laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery, Denver, Colo., on Aug. 24. His nephews Chris, David, Patrick and Michael carried his casket where he was placed next to his beloved wife Margaret. Bill was dedicated to his family and friends and will be missed forever by all of us who knew and loved him.

DOBBIN "DAN" SHUPE was born on March 13, 1936 in Taos, N.M. and passed away on June 5, 2004 in Wickenburg, Ariz. Dobbin served in the Army until 1963 and worked his own business as an outfitter at Lake Vallecito, Colo. and Apache Junction, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Shupe, and one brother, Gary Shupe. Dobbin is survived by his wife Nancy of Wickenburg.; two children, Troy Shupe of Calhan, Colo. and Terri Herrington of Durango, Colo.; two step-children, Darcy Wilsey of Wickenburg and Darrin Spriggle of Goodyear, Ariz.; sister Juanita Jordan of Bayfield, Colo.; and 10 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 9 at the Elks Lodge in Wickenburg , at 4 p.m.

Funeral services for NELLIE BROWN SIMCOX, 94, of Salome will be held Friday (May 8) at 10 a.m. at the Brown Family Cemetery in Salome. Nell was born April 12, 1915 near Plemons, Texas to Flavius J. Brown and Susie E. Knight Brown. She came to Arizona in 1917 with the family as a child -- settling briefly in Aguila and later moved to the Salome, area where the family homesteaded. She attended San Bernardino College, primarily studying creative writing. She began working as an administrative assistant at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino in 1951 where she worked until retiring in 1972. During that time, she had written several articles for both newspapers as well as several magazines. She moved back to Salome in 1972 after retiring. She has continued her writing and was known by her pen name as “Cactus Kelli.” Nell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wickenburg and also a member of the Gem and Mineral Society. She was active at one time in the Al Anon group in Wickenburg. She was preceded in death by her husband William on May 25, 1983. Nell is survived by her children, Susan S. Gossard of Davis, Calif., and Melvin Simcox of Salome; brother Hayden Brown of Salome; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. AIMEE SIMPSON passed away at her home in Wickenburg on June 13. She was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Williams, Ariz., to Simon and Charlotte POUQUETTE. Aimee was born the youngest of six children. Her parents left France in the early 1900s to homestead in the Williams area and in Wickenburg where they ran their sheep and cattle business. After graduating from Williams High School, Aimee attended Northern Arizona University and later met and married John Simpson in 1942, her husband of 54 years. Following the war, Aimee and John managed Sitgreaves Sheep and Cattle Company for 30 years. Aimee currently owned the Simpson Cattle Co. and RV Park in Wickenburg. Aimee took much joy and pride in her role as wife, mother, nana and rancher. She worked hard to meet the day-to-day demands of the ranch life she loved and the family tradition she longed to carry on for five generations. Aimee was a wonderful lady and a gracious hostess, always ready with a smile, a hot cup of coffee and plenty to eat. “Nana’s” kitchen was a warm and inviting place for family and friends to gather and to tell stories and to laugh together. Aimee shared her life, her love and her faith unselfishly and will be dearly missed by those whose lives she touched. AIMEE SIMPSON is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Larry and Sharon SIMPSON, daughter-in-law Kathy SIMPSON, grandchildren Stocker and Sage SIMPSON, Chris RICH, Steven MOHORN, and Lacey CAMARILLO and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John W. SIMPSON in 1996 and son Johnny SIMPSON in 2006. Funeral rites were conducted in Redlands, Calif., Monday morning for FRED SIMPSON, father of W. D. (Dolf) Simpson, who died at his home in Wickenburg at 5:34 p.m. Thursday of last week. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery at Redlands. Mr. Simpson was born January 28, 1878, in Lyon County, Kan. He resided in Redlands from 1918 to1928 and again from 1943 to 1958 when he and his wife moved to Wickenburg. He was a rancher. Surviving are the widow, Florence; two sons, W. D. of Wickenburg and Verne of Big Bear Lake, Calif., and three daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Mason of Wickenburg, Mrs. Marjorie Heiligman of Yucaipa, Calif., and Mrs. Evelyn Mason of San Bernardino, Calif.

JOHN W. SIMPSON of Wickenburg died Dec. 21 at his home in Wickenburg. He was 76. Mr. SIMPSON was born Jan. 23, 1920 in Prescott and raised on the Sevens cattle ranch in Ash Fork. He was a lifelong resident of Arizona. After finishing his education in Chandler, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in northern Arizona. Mr. Simpson married Aimee Pouquette in 1942 before serving in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II. Following the war, he was manager of Sitgreaves Sheep and Cattle Company for 30 years in Williams and Chandler. Mr. Simpson currently owned and managed the Simpson Cattle Company in Wickenburg with his two sons. He was a member of the Cattlemen's Association, Wickenburg Elks Lodge, American Legion, and the Woolgrowers Association. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Aimee; son and daughter-in·-law John and Kathy Simpson of Wickenburg, son and daughter-in-law Larry and Sharon Simpson of Wickenburg; grandchildren Stocker and Sage Simpson, Chris Rich and Steven Mohorn; and sister Lavine Porter of Albuquerque, N.M. Missouri Rites For Mrs. Prince's Father
Mrs. H. F. PRINCE was expected back this week from Cardwell, Missouri, where she was called by the death of her father, A. L. SIFFORD, who passed away January 7 at his home there. He was 82 years of age. His death was due to a heart attack. Mr. SIFFORD had been a farmer all of his life until his retirement five years ago. In addition to Mrs. PRINCE, he is survived by another daughter: and two sons, all living in California. Mrs. Prince drove back to Cardwell with her sister and brothers for the funeral services which were held January 11.

TONOPAH WOMAN DIES FROM SIDE-WINDER BITES
Phoenix, Aug 4. – Bitten on both hands by a sidewinder rattlesnake at her home near Tonopah, Mrs. MAIE MARY SIMMONS, 39 years old, died shortly after 8 o’clock Tuesday morning in the home of a Buckeye physician. Her death followed 24 hours of unceasing work by the physician, a nurse, members of her family, and friends to maintain the tiny spark of life that existed when Mr. and Mrs. Frank SMOTHERS, neighbors, rushed her to Buckeye by automobile. The small treacherous snake struck without warning when Mrs. SIMMONS knelt to gather wood near her home, three miles northwest of Tonopah. She said she pulled the snake’s fangs from her hand and beat the reptile to death with a stick of wood. Then she ran to her home and slashed both hands with a razor to induce bleeding, while one of her daughters, Lois, 12, ran two miles to the Smothers home. Unconscious when neighbors arrived, Mrs. SIMMONS was placed in their automobile and started on the hour-long ride here. Mrs. SMOTHERS kept the injured woman’s hand in a pan of kerosene. Administered a stimulant when she arrived, Mrs. Simmons revived and then the long but futile vigil to save her life was begun. A tourniquet was applied and pressure relieved every 14 minutes and the blood was suctioned from the wounds at regular intervals. She died with her family at her bedside.

Mrs. Singleton Of Yarnell Summoned
Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning at the Wickenburg Chapel for Mrs. PEARL SINGLETON, a resident of Yarnell for the past 20 years, who passed away Wednesday in Prescott. Mrs. Singleton was widely known in this area and at one time sang in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church here. She had been a resident of Arizona for 38 years. She was 74 years of age. Burial will take place in the Wickenburg Cemetery where her husband, who died six years ago, is also buried. There are no known surviving relatives.

RICHARD NORMAN SIROIS, 72, passed away last week at his home in Wickenburg, Ariz. He was born Dec. 28, 1936 in Chicago, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents Russell Elric Sirois and Lorraine Grace Arramy Sirois. Rick was raised in the Kankakee County area of Illinois. He lived there until he was 17, when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He worked for most of his life as an auto mechanic and service advisor with car dealerships in the Phoenix area, although his first real automotive job was in 1968 with Datsun of North America. In the 1970s he moved to Phoenix and worked for Camelback Porsche Audi as well as Max of Switzerland. He retired from the business after working at West Valley Nissan for several years as a service advisor. One of Rick’s favorite hobbies was building and flying remote-control airplanes, especially during his retirement years. He was also an avid firearms enthusiast and frequently practiced target shooting and reloading his own ammunition. On May 5, 1984 in Las Vegas, Nev., he was united in marriage to Pattie Ellen Barnes. He is survived by his wife Pattie and their son Russell Allen Sirois of Litchfield Park, Ariz. Arrangements are pending through Greenwood/Memory Lawn Mortuary of Phoenix, Arizona.

Rites In Idaho For GEORGANN SIZEMORE
Funeral services were conducted in Burley, Idaho, Wednesday for GEORGANN SIZEMORE, 9 year-old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. G. Wesley SIZEMORE of Wickenburg, who passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital, Phoenix, March 24. Burial was in that city. Prior to taking the body to Idaho, the family and friends attended memorial services in the First Presbyterian Church here last Friday conducted by Dr. Charles S. Poling with Mrs. Reuben STIFEL singing. The little girl, who was in the fourth grade at the Wickenburg Elementary School, was born February 4, 1946, at Burley, Idaho. She is survived by the parents; one sister, Mrs. Linda REID of Moscow, Idaho; the paternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. J. L. SIZEMORE of Twin Falls, Idaho; and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Stella MAGGART who spends her summers in Burley and the winters in Wickenburg. One sister, Estel MATE, died in 1945.

FORMER RESIDENT TAKEN BY DEATH
Sad news was received here this week of the death of a former Wickenburg resident, ARTHUR LEE SLOANE, 25 years old, who passed away in a sanitorium in Okanogan, Washington, April 18. Arthur leaves many friends here who mourn his passing, as he resided in Wickenburg a number of years prior to a few years ago when he returned to Washington. Surviving, besides his parents, are five sisters, Mrs Martha Stewart, Mrs Gretchen Byram, Mrs LaVerne Hollingsworth, and Mrs Jack Cisler of Oregon and three brothers, Edgar, Thomas and Walter of Washington. Funeral services were conducted April 22, and interment was made in the Sullivan cemetery at Okanogan, Washington.

BETH ANN SMALLEY, 56, passed away on May 2 after a long battle with breast cancer. Beth was very active in the Wickenburg community for more than 35 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and organized their Head Start Christmas program. Beth was a longtime member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. Most Wickenburg residents remember Beth as someone who was always helping out anyone in need. She tirelessly devoted herself to giving back to her community. Everyone was family to her. She sat on the Corporation Commission Board and the board for the R&R Respite Care Center. Beth was the manager of B&S Discount Grocery for many years. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather Ilene and Mike Long, owners of the Plaza Cafe; her father James H. Mason of Grove, Okla.; and her grandmother Iva Stacks, who started Baptist churches in Wickenburg, Congress and Morristown; and very dear longtime friend Carol Celeya. She is survived by her husband James P. Smalley of Wickenburg; daughter Joyce Hawkins of Litchfield Park; daughter Carmen Stacy of Buckeye; brother Mike Mason of Wickenburg; his son David Mason, daughter-in-law Casey, and their children Josh, Morgan and Eryk; her beloved grandchildren Benjamin Ford, Taylor Jenkins, Amanda Hawkins, and Jared Hawkins. She will be especially missed by her dear friends Kathy Perry, Jack Bland, and her “girls club” members Jackie, MaryAnne, and Cindy. Her presence will be sorely missed by all of us. There is not enough space to list each person she held dear. All are welcome to attend her service. Forgive us if we have forgotten to mention anyone, but know that Beth never forgot any of you. A short memorial service will be held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in the memorial garden, where her ashes will be interred. The service will be on Saturday (June 13) at 6:30 p.m. Father Charles and Reverend Pam will officiate. Special thanks to David’s Desert Chapel for his support, friendship and assistance with the arrangements - we would have been lost without your guidance. Special thanks also to Hospice of Arizona for finally giving her the peace to rest and continue on her next big adventure, and embracing her as your “own mom.” Her family was greatly appreciative of your special attention and care. She had lived in Arizona for the past five years. BECKY JEAN SMITH, age 53, passed away on Nov. 4. She was born Nov. 23, 1954 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Milo and Emma GRABER. Becky was raised in Ft. Wayne and attended schools there. Following high school, she moved to Florida where she met Mike Smith. Later they moved to Wickenburg and were married March 21, 1982 in Wickenburg, Ariz., making their home here. Together they worked in the Christian ministry here in Wickenburg. She later worked for the United States Postal Service where she worked for many years as a letter carrier. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. Her activity in the church included working with the youth groups and serving in missionary labors in the Dominican Republic. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother and will be missed by all who knew her. Becky is survived by husband Michael Smith of Wickenburg; daughters Gina and Alexi Smith and son Joel Smith all of Wickenburg; mother Emma Graber of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; sister Karen Cohen of Indiana; brothers Steven Graber of Alabama and James Graber of Indiana. She was preceded in death by her father Milo Graber in 2001. Funeral services were held Nov. 11 at the Mt. Hope Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Ken Demeter of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed at Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery. A memorial educational scholarship fund has been setup at the Wickenburg Branch of Bank of America to benefit students in the Dominican Republic. The family suggests any memorial contributions can be made in Becky’s memory to this fund. Arrangements are under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home and Crematory.

CATHI LYN SMITH of Wickenburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 8 at her home in Wickenburg. She was 38. Cathi was born Aug. 15, 1962 in Harrisburg, Penn. She moved to Wickenburg as a youngster, and was a 31-year resident of the community. Cathi was a 1980 graduate of Wickenburg High School. She owned and operated the Mecca Indian Jewelry Store and Motel from 1981 to 1996. Cathi is loved very much and will be missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her mother, Dale Smith; brother, John Zeigler; sister, Renee Bishop; and two nieces and one nephew, all of Wickenburg. In addition she is survived by a stepbrother, Terry Smith of Pennsylvania; and a stepsister, Sherry Edwards of South Carolina. Sudden Death Of CLAIR M. SMITH Is Shock To Friends
This community was shocked and saddened by the sudden death last Monday afternoon of CLAIR M. SMITH, prominent business man, which occurred in Tucson where he and Mrs. Smith were visiting their son, Wallace, a student at the University of Arizona. Mr. Smith had not been well for several weeks but his condition was not considered serious. He passed away at. 1:30 p.m. while taking a nap. Funeral services are to be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the A. L. Moore & Sons mortuary in Phoenix with burial following in the Greenwood Memorial Cemetery. The Wickenburg Masonic Lodge will conduct the graveside services. Mr. Smith had been agent for the General Petroleum Corporation in this area since 1952, coming here from Phoenix. He had previously lived in Holbrook. Born in Burrton, Kansas, May 27, 1903, he came to Arizona in 1906 and was employed by the Southern Pacific railroad and later the Arizona Highway Department. He was an engineer for that department when the Hassayampa River bridge and underpass were built and while the Phoenix highway was being improved. He and Mrs. Smith lived in Wickenburg at that time, from 1935 until 1937. Mr. Smith was a member of the Wickenburg Rotary Club, Round-Up Club, the Royal Arch Masons and the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the American Association of Engineers. Surviving are the wife, Evelyn and son Wallace; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle CASS of Phoenix and. a nephew Dr. Robert E. McCOMB, Jr., also of Phoenix.

Mrs. CLARA MAY SMITH, 81, died in her home at 2 Davis Way Monday morning. The body was taken to the Maricopa County medical officer Phoenix whose report was that death was from natural causes, says Police Chief Dick SAVAGE. There were no funeral services and burial was in the Wickenburg Cemetery, Wednesday. Surviving is the husband, William SMITH.

FRED C. SMITH veteran employee died of a heart attack at his home on Jefferson street sometime Monday afternoon. He was found by Mrs. Smith upon her return to the house at 5: 30. Dr. Floyd BRALLIAR, summoned to the home, expressed belief Mr. Smith had been dead about two hours. He had not been working for the past two weeks because he was not feeling well, but had given no indication that he was seriously ill. Born in Holboken, N. J., on September 24, 1884, Mr. SMITH had been a resident of Wickenburg since 1927 and held several positions with the town during the past 19 years. He was Town Marshal for 10 year and also served as constable of the Wickenburg precinct just prior to the present constable, Louis F. WESTALL. In 1920 he was married to Anna DILLEMUTH, the surviving widow. Two children also survive, Mrs. Evelyn McGINNIS and William, a student at Arizona State Teacher’s college at Flagstaff. The son was just recently discharged from the Navy. Two brothers and a sister, living in the east, also survive. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. on Friday at the Wickenburg Chapel, with burial in the Wickenburg cemetery.

JAMES LOUIS SMITH, JR., age 82, passed away December 25 at his home in Wickenburg. Jim was born in Cross Village, Mich., where he was raised and attended school. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served for more than 20 years and was stationed in various locations throughout the world. He served two tours in Vietnam. He was the artist of the original “Puff the Magic Dragon” painted on the nose of a fighter plane during the Vietnam War and referred to in several movies. He retired in 1968 from the Air Force. Shortly there after he began working for Magma Copper Co. in San Manuel, Ariz., for 12 years, retiring in 1986. Jim was a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians in the Great Lakes, Mich. area. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Jim came to Wickenburg in 1990. He enjoyed Western art and oil painting, sculpting as well as wood carving. Jim had been very active with Alcoholics Anonymous in providing care and support for others, and he recently received his 40-year chip as a member of the organization. Jim is survived by sons David, James and Garth all of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter Rebecca Healy of Holbrook, Ariz.; brother Owen Smith of Mt. Pleasant Mich.; grandchildren Roberta Hyneman, Walter Rawls, IV, Grant Smith, Abbey Smith, Scotty Smith, Elijah Sherman-Smith; and great-grandchildren Rachel Jordan Hyneman, Walter Gray Rawls,V, Logan Ray Rawls; former wife and friend Lavinia Barbara Smith. Mr. Snyder lived Bullhead City since 1951. His family owned and operated The Bullhead Chevron since the early 1950s. He and five of his sons operated the station for the past 20 years with his wife, Ellie. Mr. Snyder had many interest, but his love was his family and mechanics. Funeral services were scheduled to be held in Memphis, Tennessee, Thursday of this week for M. H. (PAT) SPELTZ of that city who died suddenly Monday night in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he had gone on a business trip. STANLEY V. SPENCER, age 72, passed away April 4 at his residence in Wickenburg. Stan was born July 29, 1934 in Huntington Park, Calif. He was a graduate of Whittier College and came to Wickenburg three years ago from Southern California. Stan was a member of the Christian Science Church of Prescott and after retiring was a dedicated furniture designer and builder. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Mrs. NINA SPOON Summoned Here
Funeral services were to have been held early this week in Beardstown, Illinois, for Mrs. NINA SPOON, mother of Mrs. Robert W. PHELPS of Wickenburg, who passed away early Saturday morning of last week in Community Hospital here. Mrs. SPOON, who was visiting her daughter and family here, had been in ill health for more than a year. She was taken to the hospital Friday evening when her condition became critical. A native of Illinois, Mrs. Spoon was born May 18, 1887; and had lived all of her life in that state. She had visited in Wickenburg on several previous occasions. She had been a widow for the past five years. In addition to Mrs. PHELPS, another daughter, Mrs. Betty DORRIS, who recently moved to Wickenburg, also survives and there are three sons, Howard, Herman and John, all living in Illinois. Two brothers and two sisters are also residents of the midwest, and there are 15 surviving grandchildren. Mr. & Mrs. PHELPS accompanied the body to Illinois, leaving Wickenburg early Sunday morning.

DuWAYNE A. STADEL of Hoyt, Kansas, died Oct. 27 at his residence in Kansas. He was 79. Mr. Stadel was born July 2, 1917 north of Hoyt on the family farm and had lived in Hoyt his entire life. His parents were Clarence A. and Maye Elizabeth Davis Stadel. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Stadel also was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Philip Billard Post 1650, VFW and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3. He is a descendant of a pioneer family. His great-grandparents came to America from Germany in 1857, settling at Easton, Pa. The family moved to Kansas in 1868 and settled on a farm near Hoyt, where Mr. Stadel and his wife remained. Mr. Stadel was the fourth generation of the Stadel family to live on the farm. He was married to Eliene R. Stenger on March 21, 1942 in Topeka, Kan. They were divorced. He later married Margaret Hazel Callison on Nov. 11, 1978 in Hoyt, Kan. Survivors include his wife Margaret Hazel Stadel of Hoyt; sons Gary Stadel of Olathe, Kan., Darrel Stadel of Wickenburg and Rodney Stadel of Hoyt; sister Joan Coffey of Mesa; brother. Clyde Stadel of Topeka, Kan.; stepson, Jim Bibler of Topeka; stepdaughter Pat Moore of Tampa, Fla.; six granddaughters; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday: Oct. 29 at the Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka, Kan. Philip Billard Post 1640, Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted the military graveside honors at Rochester Cemetery in Topeka. A visitation was held at the Parker -Price Mortuary on Monday, Oct; 28. Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka handled all of the arrangements.

Mr. Stadel was born July 2, 1917 north of Hoyt on the family farm. Tragedy Strikes Stanaway Family
September 29 was a tragic day for Mr. & Mrs. Ed STANAWAY and members of their family. As previously reported in The SUN, their daughter, Michelle, 4½, and Mrs. Stanaway's sister, Mrs. Opal HOUSTON, 29, of London, England, were instantly killed in an automobile wreck near Caliente, Nevada, on September 24. Two days later, Mrs. Stanaway's father, JESS PENDLETON, 68, died at his home in Leavenworth, Washington. One funeral service was held for all three and all three, representing three generations, were laid to rest beside each other in a beautiful cemetery at Cashmere, Washington. The English Army Air Corps flew M/Sgt. Dale HOUSTON and his seven children from London to Washington when he received word of his wife's death. The children range in age from 7 months to 13 years. Their mother had come to America just a few days before to see her father who was then seriously ill. It was when the dying father asked to see the Stanaway children that Mrs. HOUSTON and her brother, Frank PENDLETON, drove to Wickenburg to get them. It was on the trip back to Washington that the accident happened. Mr. PENDLETON, the brother, was injured. The seven little English chi1dren, says Mr. STANAWAY, will remain in America while their father returns to his Army career in London.

MARY PAULINE STEGALL, a longtime resident of Wickenburg, died May 5 at Sun West Care Center in Sun City. Mary was born April 16, 1919 in Manly, Iowa, to parents George Henry Duncan and Gertrude Brendel Duncan. She graduated from Manly High School in 1936 and attended Cornell College and Morningside College in Iowa, majoring in organ and voice. During World War II she worked for the U.S. Military in aircraft communications and weather data. After World War II, Mary married Gerald Guy Stegall and together they operated a Made-Rite business in Grand Junction, Colo. They moved to Wickenburg in 1960, and for many years owned and operated the Purple Hills Motel. Mary was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Wickenburg serving as organist, choir director, and church secretary. Mary was preceded in death by her husband in 1974. She is survived by step-son Larry (Maralie) Stegall of Clifton, Colo.; grandchildren Brad Stegall of Denver; Barbara (Calvin) Fidler of Englewood; and Brian (Sandy) Stegall of Clifton; and great-grandchildren Monica Stegall, Megan Stegall, and Danae Fidler. Brad and Barbara were baptized in Wickenburg at the First Presbyterian Church. Services will be May 14 at First Presbyterian Church at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Samuel Weinschenk officiating. Burial will follow at Wickenburg Cemetery. Arrangements are by David's Desert Chapel Funeral Home in Wickenburg.

Memorial services for JAKE M. STEVENS, age 28, who passed away December 25 were held on Friday (Dec. 28) at 10 a.m. at the Wickenburg Funeral Home. Jake was born in Minneapolis, Minn., and raised in Wickenburg. In his youth he was active in Pop-Warner football and other sporting activities. He began working construction with his father primarily in woodworking and had worked for various other cabinet-making companies in the area. He enjoyed the outdoors, dirt bike riding, Western dancing, and was considered by his friends and many who knew him to be larger than life in many ways. He had a witty, dry sense of humor. Funeral services for MRS. PATRICIA (TRISHA) STICHT, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harold HEINE, were held in the Wickenburg Chapel last Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Dean McMANN of Scottsdale, former pastor of the St. Alban’s Episcopal Church here, officiating. Burial followed in the Wickenburg Cemetery. Mrs. Sticht, 21, died suddenly in the home of her parents on the Rincon Road December 12. Born in Elmhurst, Illinois, December 3, 1941, she had resided here for the past four years. Surviving in addition to the parents, are the husband, Brian, and a 2 weeks old daughter, Kim, both of Wickenburg; a brother, Carl HEINE who is in the Navy in the Mediterranean; and two sisters, Mrs. Robert BEECROFT and Mrs. Roger PFLUNGER, both of Villa Park, Illinois.

Before coming to Arizona, Mrs. Stonebarger lived in Los Angeles for 31 years where she owned and operated a women’s dress shop. Dr. CHARLES H. STONE, 76, father of Mrs Reuben STIFEL, died at midnight Wednesday in Good Samaritan Hospital, Phoenix, where he had been a patient since. October 9. MARTHA A. "MARTY" STOUT of Wickenburg died Sept. 18 at her home in Wickenburg. She was 76. Mrs. STOUT was born Oct. 3, 1919 in Breckenridge, Texas. She had lived in Arizona for the past 24 years. Marty lived in Arizona as a child where she met her husband David Stout. They later moved to Denver to work for the Rodeo Cowboys Association. From there, they moved to Wickenburg in January of 1975. Her husband David preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1990. Marty was best known for her love of golf and spending time with her friends at Wickenburg Country Club, where she was a life time member. She was an avid gardener and had a beautiful yard at her home. Survivors include her daughters Pat Johns of Prescott Valley, Debbie Stout of Phoenix and Christie Vendegna of Prescott; eight grandchildren, all of whom attended Wickenburg Schools; 13 great-grandchildren all of Arizona; sisters Fae Sanders of Tucson, Beth Bergstrom of Moses Lake, Wash., and Dorothy O'Hara of Wenden; brother Barron Davis of Prescott; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 21 at2p:m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Wickenburg; with Pastor Bill Root officiating. A private visitation was conducted for family members. B. C. STRAUGHAN, Former Banker & Mayor Summoned
B. C. STRAUGHAN, one of the builders of Wickenburg, died in the home of his son-in-law, W. R. CURRY, in Phoenix Monday. Funeral services were conducted in the First Presbyterian Church here at 10 o'clock Thursday morning by Dr. Charles S. POLING. Burial was in Wickenburg Cemetery alongside his wife, who died in 1939, and a son who died previously. Mr STRAUGHAN, who had observed his 93rd birthday just a month ago, came to Wickenburg in 1917 from Kansas. Here he organized and was president of the Traders Bank of Wickenburg from 1922 until 1942. He was elected mayor of Wickenburg in 1924 and succeeded himself four consecutive terms. In 1927 he set up the town budget in such a way that he relieved citizens of all their town taxes. His bank was located in that part of the Wickenburg Mine Supply building where the machine shop is now located. He also operated a mortuary in the building where Snyder's Transfer is now located. At the time Mr. Straughan owned these buildings. When he decided to close the bank in 1942 and retire, he wrote each of his depositors a letter asking them to come in and get their money prior to a given date. Mr. Straughan was born on a farm near Morrilton, Arkansas, Nov. 2, 1866. His mother, a native of Kentucky, lived until she was 94 years old. The father, a native of Virginia, settled in Arkansas in 1830. Mr. Straughan was reared in Arkansas and had very little opportunity an education as his father died when the boy was 15 years old, leaving the boy as the head of a family of five. Realizing the need for an education, when he was 20 years old and had enough money to maintain the family, he attended Carlton College at Syracuse, 0hio, for one year taking a business course. He moved to Kansas in 1891 where he remained for 27 years. During that time he organized and became president of the Traders State Bank of Arkansas City, Kansas. He sold his interests there in 1917 to come to Arizona for the health of his son who died here several years later. Only survivors are son-in-law, W. R. CURRY; a granddaughter, Mrs. John HOLCOMBE; and three great-grandchildren, all of Phoenix.

VIRGINIA J. STRICKLAND, 68, went home to her Lord on June 22, 2004. She was born the eldest child of Ezra C. HERRON, Sr. and Mary Velma HERRON on January 19, 1936, in Midland, Texas. A former resident of Aguila, she moved to Kingman in 1981 to be with her daughter and her family. After working for Kmart for several years, she went to work for Holiday Inn as the night auditor. Virginia is survived by her brother Ezra C. Herron, Jr. and sister-in-law Jan of El Paso, Texas, and a sister Velma June Fischer of Texas; daughter Vondalyn J. Faucher and son-in-law Jim of Kingman; grandson and wife James R. and Barbara Faucher ; granddaughter Vanessa J. Faucher and grandson-in-law Jason Whisler; granddaughter Laura L. Faucher; four great-grandchildren, Agatha, Alyxandar, Viviana and Joshua, all from Kingman. Several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends also survive her. An informal gathering to celebrate Virginia's life will be held at her daughter's house, 1940 Detroit Ave. in Kingman, on July 3 at 6 p.m. Donations to help the family with final expenses will be accepted by Colleen Faucher at Chicago Title Insurance Co. of Kingman on Andy Devine Avenue. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

BETTY STRONG, a former Yarnell resident, died Dec. 20 at the Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott. She was 73. Mrs. Strong was born Jan. 5, 1927 in Sauk Centre, Minn. She was married to Dale Strong in 1947 in Minneapolis, Minn., and after living in many western states the couple moved to Arizona and owned a motel in Yarnell before semi-retiring to Prescott Valley in 1991. Survivors include her husband; children Michael and Bruce Strong of Woodbury, Minn., Okley Strong of Prescott, and Patricia Brown of Red Wing, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters and brothers, Dorothy Wolfe and Donald of Sauk Centre and Russell of Dickinson, N.D. HENRY STROTHMAN OF SALOME DIES
Funeral services for HENRY JOSEPH STROTHMAN of Salome will be held today (Friday) at 10 a. m. in Wickenburg Chapel with the Rev. Charles Surber officiating. Mr. Strothman, 66 years old, was admitted to Community Hospital July 3 and died the following day. He had lived in Salome for many years and, until his retirement recently, was employed by the State Highway Department. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. W. M. Swan, of Caney, Kan., who arrived in Wickenburg Thursday. Burial will be in the Wickenburg Cemetery.

BRUCE ALEXANDER SUMNER passed away March 5 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. After a short time living in the Bahamas, Bruce planted his roots in Wickenburg 37 years ago. While the broker/owner of a successful real estate company, American Realty in Wickenburg, he served his community as Chamber of Commerce President, Commissioner of Wickenburg Planning and Zoning, and a member of the Wickenburg Rotary Club. He also served as a director on the board of the Glendale West Maricopa Board of Realtors, and as a director on the board of the Arizona Association of Realtors. He was named "Realtor of the Year" for 1980. After selling American Realty, he and his wife Pat moved to Glendale where he became the Chief Executive Director of the Glendale West Maricopa Board of Realtors for 20 years. He was the consummate "Realtor Professional," who was dedicated to the protection and promotion of private property rights and the promotions and protection of the Realtor image. Bruce retired and moved back to the Wickenburg he loved for the last nine months of his life. One of Bruce's greatest joys was spending time at the ocean in Puerto Penasco, Mexico, and the California Coast with his family and friends. Throughout his life, Bruce was a devoted, loving and generous husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Pat, his daughters Karen Napier and Lynn Hearn (Ken), his granddaughter Nikki Napier, his sons Michael, Mark, Gerald and James Janicki, their spouses and nine grandchildren, his niece Judy Hansford of Vancouver and Wendy, Patti, Bob, John, and Gord, all of Canada. His loss will be felt by his great many friends and fellow professionals. Bruce requested that no service be held. SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. ANNA SUTTER SHOCKS CONGRESS
CONGRESS-- The sudden death of Mrs. ANNA SUTTER at a bus station in Ashfork while returning from a visit to her mother in Oklahoma, was a shock to this comunity. Mrs. Sutter had left the train at Ashfork on Wednesday, October 29, and was at the bus station there buying a ticket for Congress when she became ill, fell to the floor and died before medical aid could be summoned. Mrs. Sutter had lived in Congress since last spring, coming here from Phoenix where she resided for 36 years. She was a native of Kansas. She made her home here with her son, Henry, and the latter's small son, Stevie. She made many friends here all of whom join in extending sympathy to the surviving husband, Elmer, and the two sons, Henry and Hans. Funeral services were held in Phoenix, November 2, and she was laid to rest in Greenwood Memorial Park.

MR. RAYMOND S. SWADER, age, 61, passed away Oct. 28. Funeral services will be held on Friday (Nov.7) at 6 p. m. at Wickenburg Funeral Home. Ray was born July 15, 1947 in Tucson, Ariz. He was raised in the Tucson and Willcox areas. He began working in farming and ranching at an early age and later worked construction where he became a plumber by trade. He had attended Arizona State University as well as the University of Arizona, mainly studying art. Ray was a very talented artist working with oil painting and pencil sketching. He enjoyed painting scenic art in many forms. He had worked for several years for the Pima County Dept. of Sanitation as a plumber, retiring for medical reasons. Ray was well known for his abilities as a gardener and had grown organic produce for years, supplying many families in the area as well as the Senior Center with fresh produce. He was affectionately known as the “Tomato Man” to many. Ray was large in stature and had an extremely big heart full of generosity. He enjoyed traveling and meeting new people. He is survived by his companion Jeanne Wolfsong of Wickenburg and her daughter Helen Gollihar and husband James of Wickenburg, as well as grandchildren Hailey, Faith and Jade, all of Wickenburg. The family has suggested in lieu of flowers that vegetable seedlings be brought to the memorial service as a tribute to Ray. They are also accepting memorial donations either directly or to the funeral home in Ray’s name to offset funeral expenses. Arrangements are under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home and Crematory.

Rites Held For DOROTHY SWANK
Funeral services were conducted at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning at the Presbyterian Church for MRS. DOROTHY SWANK of Yarnell who died in Community Hospital August 12. Rev Bill BARKER, Baptist pastor, officiated and burial followed in the Wickenburg Cemetery. Mrs. Swank was born in Chicago 51 years ago. She came to Arizona 14 years ago, living first in Litchfield Park and for the past 12 years in Yarnell. She and her husband, Floyd F. SWANK, operated the Twin Oaks Café in Yarnell for several years. Surviving are the husband; one son, Floyd, Jr., of San Diego; the mother, Mrs. Roy MARTIN of Ontario, California; a brother, Donald MARTIN of River Grove, Illinois, and two grandchildren.

MACY LEE SWINK passed away on June 8, 2004 in Colorado. She was 95. Macy was born in Galena, Kan. on July 19, 1908. Graveside services will be held at Aguila Eagle Eye Cemetery, 10 a.m. on June 18, 2004. Pastor Duane Middleton will officiate. Arrangements by Wickenburg Funeral Home.
