 SAMUEL BISE
A UNION SOLDIER

Samuel Bise was born ca 1842 in Tennessee at Roan, Tennessee, son of Robert and Lucinda Hampton Bise.  He joined the Union forces in Kentucky as a private in Company C, 16th Kentucky Regiment.

Samuel married Caroline McCoy, daughter of William Walker and Elizabeth Couch McCoy.

Their children were:
1) Zelpha, born 1866, m. John M. Rose.

2) Malissa Ellen married Morgan T. Smith.

3) Sarah, born 1870, married Swinfield Rose.

4) Mary married George Talbert.

5) Thomas P., born 1877, married Delia Meadows.

6) Rushia married Charles Meaders.

7) Laney, born 1880, married Luther M. Hillman.

8) William, born 1886, married Bertha Meaders.

9) Lina, a school teacher, never married.

10) John, born 1882, married Lena Ashbrook.

Samuel and Caroline had two children to die young.  Samuel and Caroline are buried in the Maple Grove
Church Cemetery on Sandy Ridge.

Samuel's siblings were:
1) James, born 1838, married Elizabeth Barlow.

2) Canady.  He was reported killed in the Civil War.

3) Sarah married Joseph Freeman.

Half-siblings through Robert's marriage to Delilah Vance were:
4) Pinckney (James) married Mary Fitch.

5) Robert B. married 1) Jane Large, 2) Mary Bowman, 3) Betty Hill.

6) Elizabeth married 1) Eli Wells, 2) William J. Ring.

7) Daniel Bise, born 1844, married 1) Delilah Wells, 2) Mattie Scoggins (See separate story).

8) Eliza married Seth Adkins.

9) Thomas married Laura McCoy.

10) John Bise married Elizabeth Kilgore.

The half-siblings, except John, are identified as "Vance" on the 1850 Russell County Census.  Some descendants assume that the children belong to Robert Bise because of the close association of the Vance, Bise and Hampton families in Roan, Tennessee.  Please note that Robert Bise was living next door to Delilah on the same census.
