Witch Hazel
(Snapping Hazel or Winter Bloom)

    A common remedy in the United States.  Used as an astrigent when the leaves, bark or twigs are mixed with alcohol and water.  Applied with a damp steam towel to bruises and strains or a cool compress for fever.Also used for a liniment and eyewash and  internal problems.  Witch Hazel was once used as a divining rod to detect water  and minerals in the ground.When the pods open up, the seeds shoot out into the air up to twenty feet. 
    Blooms in the fall.  This one was found in the Turkey Branch section of Wise County.
