Minutes of the 18th Annual Meeting of The Three Forks of Powel's River, Primitive Baptist Association, held with Oak Grove Church, Lee Co., VA, August 23,24,25.

Obituary:

Elder M. T. Lipps, born in Shady Valley, Johnson Co., TN, 11-4-1815, died 9-22-1894, married Elizabeth Davenport 11-29-1835 in Bakersville, N.C.  His wife died July 2, 1895, both are buried in Granger Co., TN.  The family moved to Guest's Station (now Coeburn), VA in 1838 and resided there the remainder of his life.  They had 10 children, 8 living.  He joined the Primitive Baptist Church in 1844/45 and was authorized to preach 8-28-1845 and was ordained in Nov. 1846 by Alexandria Vance and Silas Ratliff.  In 1856 he was elected county and circuit court clerk and held that office for 13 years.  He was also elected to the Va. House of Representatives in 1873 and served for 2 sessions.  Obituary written by J. M. Hill.

James H. Deel, born 8-11-1823 in Buchanan Co., VA.  He married Vicy Lockard, 2/2/1842 who died 6/29/1905.  He was a faithful church member for 58 years.

Obituaries:

G. W. Francisco, the son of Louis Francisco, was born in Scott Co., Va, 11/4/1829, died 3/6/1906.  He came to Pike Co., Ky in boyhood, where me met and married Zarrilda Osborn, daughter of Judgh Jeremiah Osborn, June 1853.  They had 9 children, four boys and five girls, all living at the time of his death.  Zarrilda Osborn Francisco died 1/25/1888.  G. W. Francisco married Ceatty Cook, Widow of Elder Solomon Cook of Floyd Co., Ky.  They had one child, a daughter, age 15.  He joined the Cool Spring Church of the Old Regular Baptist Church  6/1880 and served as either deacon or clerk until the time of the great divide.  Being a firm believer in a "Free Salvation" he withdrew from the unorthodox party and united with the Old Elkhorn church in which he served as deacon until his death.

John D. Bowling was born 9/22/1837, died 3/4/1906.  He was married to Winnie Craft; they had 13 children, 4 boys, 9 girls.  He joined the Baptist Church in 1867.  He was Clerk of Mt. Zion Church.  Written by J. C. Swindall.

Mary Susan Webb, was born in Letcher Co., Ky 12/23/1865m died 1/7/1905. She married Riley Webb in 1889; they had 7 children, two of whom died in iinfancy.  Written by Riley Webb.

Nancy J. Horn was the daughter of Sarah and Smith Mullins.  She married Elder F. M. Horn, 9/29/1881.  She died 8/27/1906,  She had 15 children, four of whom died in infancy. Written by J. C. Swindall.

Minutes of the 48th Annual Meeting of The Union Association of Old Regular Baptists, held with The Rebecca Church, Pike Co., Ky, September 20-22, 1907.

Hulda E. Powell, born 4/1/1864, died 3/13/1907, leaving her husband, 2 sons and a daughter.  She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth McPeak.  She married Elder George Powell, 2/4/1881; they had 5 children, two of whom are deceased.  She joined the Old Regular Baptist Church in 1901.  Written by Elder J. C. Swindall

Lurena Wright, born 4/23/1845 in Pound, Va, was the daughter of James and Polly Bolling.  She died 7/3/1907.  She married Hiram Wright of Letcher County, Ky., 3/10/1866 and became a citizen of that county.  She was the mother of 10 children, four boys and six girls.  She joined the Bethel Church of the Old Regular Baptists July 1883 and remained a faithful member until her death.

-Polly Swindall was born in Ash Co., N.C. in 1837, died 5/1/1907.  She was the daughter of Joseph and Patsy Phipps.  At age 14 she united with the old Regular Baptist Church...  She was married to John W. Swindall at age 16.  She was mother to 13 children, six boys and seven girls.  Her husband, three sons, and 2 daughters  preceded her in death.  Her remaining children are: Mahlon R. Swindall, Rufus B. Swindall , Elder J. C. Swindall, Mrs. U. K. Grizzle, Mrs. Lydia Hibbitts, Mrs. N. A. Dotson, Mrs. Emma Beverly, widow, and Mrs. Vie Hopkins.  Written by L. M. Vanover

Caroline Kiser, born 8/5/1866, died 3/27/1908, was the daughter of Samuel E.. and Zilpha Rose.  She married Garland Kiser and they had 5 children, all alive at the time of her death.  Written by Elder H. N. Rose

Sarah Turner was born 12/8/1891 and died 9/1/1905 at age 14.  She was the daughter of Charles and Hettie Turner.  

Una Ramsey was born in Russell Co., Va. in 831.  She was the mother of 14 children, there having preceded her in death.  Her husband was Rainwater Ramsey.  She joined the United Baptist Church in 1877, afterward she became dissatisfied with their doctrine and joined the Regular Baptists at Caney Fork in Dickenson Co., Va. in 1906.  Written by Roland Stanley.

Sarah Dovis, born 8/8/1861, died 3/26/1908,  was the daughter of Soloman and Mahala Wright.  She married Thomas F. Dovis; they had 3 children.  She joined the old Regular Baptist Church in 1898 and remained a faithful member until her death.  Written by Elder W. R. Balling

Winnie Colley was born in Russell Co., Va on Dumps Creed 5/7/1880, died 5/8/1908.  She was the daughter of Elijah and Jane Breeding.  She married J. B. Colley at age 15 years, with Jonas Rasnick officiating at the wedding.  They had two children, Cora Colley and Richard D. Colley.  She joined the Old Regular Baptist Church in august 1907 and was baptized by Tira McFadden into the fellowship of the church at Russell Fork, near the mouth of Little Fox Creek.  Written by R. D. Murphy.

John W. Back was born 7/6/1849, died 6/18/1906.  He married Lucy Ann Suffen; they had 12 children, seven boys and five girls, two of whom preceded him in death.  He joined the Baptist church 8/16/1901,  Written by W. R. Balling.

Margaret Austin, born 6/30/1844, died 5/30/1914, was the daughter of Jesse and Margaret Austin.  Obit was written by her sister, M. E. Bradley.

Sarah Hamilton, born 7/28/1869, died 10/8/1908, was the daughter of Jackson and Marfaert Stallard.  She married J. R. Hamilton ca 1888; they had 7 children, all still living.  She joined the ORB church at Birchfield and was baptized by Elder John H. Riggs in Nov. 1905.  Written by S. J. Baker.

Francis Webb, born 12/7/1890, died 1/22/1914, married Nelson Webb, 10/8/1878 (sic); they had 11 children; 3 died in infancy.  She joined the ORB Church in June 1908.  Her husband also was a church member.  Written by Bennett Adams.

R. M. Mullins, born 1/20/1870, died 7/24/1914, married Ellen Potter 4/10/1861 (sic); they had 11 children, 8 still living.  Written by Samuel Wheatley

Pattsey Mullins, born in Pike Co., Ky on 5/7/1828, died 3/19/1914, was the daughter of Ben Potter.  She Married John Mullins ca 1850; they had 7 children, 4 still living.  She joined the ORB church ca 1875.  Written by Samuel Wheatley.

Susie Hollins, the daughter of Benjamine (sic) Susannah Potter, was born on Elkhorn Creek in Letcher Co., Ky. In 1836, died 6/17/1914.  She married Lafayette Bentley in 1860; they had 3 children, 2 girls, 1 boy.  Mr. Bentley died in 1866.  She married James Hollins in 1870; they had 3 children.  She was a member of Pine Grove ORB Church for 33 years.  Written by W. H. Ratliff.

Elihu Dale, born 8/20/1845, died 4/13/1914, married 3 times but there was no record of his first marriage.  Second, he married Jane Lee; they had 8 children, 6 boys, 2 girls, 3 of these deceased.  Jane Lee Dale was a member of the Bull Creek ORB church for several years before her death.  Third, Elihu Dale married Dideema Clevinger; they had 3 children, 2 are still living.  He joined the church on the 2nd Saturday of Oct. 1908 and was baptized by Elder D. C. Church.  Written by M. R. O'Quin

John Bentley, born in Pike Co., Ky on 5/20/1884, died 4/15/1914, married Mandy Fletcher.  They had 5 children, 4 still living.  He joined the Pine Grove ORB church and was baptized by Elder R. H. Holbrook.  He was ordained a deacon and served most of 3 years.  His wife was still living.  The last song he tried to sing was "Oh sing to me of Heaven when I am call to die, sing songs of holy ecstasy to waft my soul on high."  Written by his mother, Francis Bentley.

John W. O'Quinn , born 5/7/1843, died 8/1911.  He joined the Primitive Baptist Church and was baptized into fellowship of the Johnson Bottom Church of Washington Association.  He stayed with them until they departed from the old time faith of fathers and went to preaching the doctrine of fatalism then he lifted his letter and went to the Cedar Grove ORB Church.  He was  frim believer of free salvation by Grace.  He said many times that he never swore an oath after he was 8 years old and was never intoxicated on any strong drink but once during his 98 years.  Written by his widow, Mary O'Quin

W. H. Duty was born 2/11/1841, died 10/21/1913.  He married Martha Barnett ca 1865; they had 8 sons and 1 daughter; 1 son and 1 daughter died in infancy; the others still living.  Martha Barnett Duty died 1/3/1890.  W. H. Duty married Nancy Compton on 3/24/1891; they had 3 they had 3 they had 3 sons and 3 daughters, the sons all died in infancy.  W. H. and Nancy Compton Duty joined the ORB Church in 1600(sic).  Written by his son, C. M. Duty.

James H. Pressley, born 4/16/1887, died 1/18/1914, in Lawrence Co., Ky., was the son of J. J. and Margaret Pressley.  Ca 1897, The Pressley's moved to Dickenson Co., VA where James H. grew to manhood and was a "nice and respectable citizen."  He was survived by his wife, 4 children, his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.  His death was due to appendicitis for which he initially had refused an operation.  After several days, he agreed to the surgery, but it was too late.  He had a brother named George.  His wife's name was Florence He had a sister named Maggie Owens, who wrote the lengthy obituary which chronicles his illness and his eventually successful effort to obtain salvation through praying with Tyra McFadin and on his own.

Lucuda Justus Layme, wife of Hiram Layme, birth and death date unknown.  She joined the Regular Baptist Church in 1867 and was baptized in August 1867 by Rev. Gable Riffe.  She was the mother of 4 children, 3 living..

Hiram Layme was born 1\30\1843, died 3\14\1918.  He joined the Sulphur Spring Church in 1867.  He married Lucuda Justus; they had 2 daughters and 2 sons, 3 still living.  He was baptized by Reb. Gable Riffe in August 1867.  Written by George W. Charles, Hurly, VA.

Lloyd Henry England was born 1/22/1875, died 8/13/1918.  He joined the Old Regular Baptist Church and was baptized 4 days before he died.  Written by Blaine England.

Lizzie Lester was born in Buchanan Co., VA. 2/9/1869.  She married Elisha Lester 4/7/1894.  They had 12 children, 9 boys and 3 girls, two of whom died in infancy.  She joined the Regular Baptist Church 10/16/1914 and was baptized by W.R. Estep at Panther, W.VA.  Written by Elder Thomas Lester.

Floyd Berry was born 6/22/1816.  He was the son of John and Susan Perry.  He married Polly Ann C. at age 25.  They had 9 children, five girls; and 4 boys, six of whom are living.  He joined the Regular Baptist Church 10/10/1903 and served as Clerk about 10 years.  Written by Perry Cline

Lear Mullins, born 10/29/1906, died 10/21/1918, was the daughter of Patton and Olley Mullins.  She was survived by her parents, 6 borthers and 1 sister.  Written by her Grandmother, Annie Mullins Clay

Willaim D. Howell, b 12/30/1868, died 10/8/1919.  He was a member of the ORB Church, having united with the Bethel Church in Letcher Co., KY, and was baptized the 2nd Sunday in December 1888 by Elder William R. Craft.  He had been a preacher for 30 years.  He was buried in the Elkhorn City Cemetery.  Written by A. L. Belcher

Alifair Holbrooks, born 6/29/1873, died 3/2/1920, was the daughter of Smith and Sallie Mullins.  She married George Holbrooks; they had 4 children.  She was survived by her husband and 2 children.  She was a member of the Pilgrims Rest ORB Church for over 30 years.  Written by Willie S. Mullins.

Nancy Hopkins, born 1852, died 6/28/1920, was the daughter of Winright and Sarah Adkins.  She M. S. Hopkins in 1870; they had 4 sons and 9 daughters, 8 living, as was her husband.  She joined the ORB church and was baptized the 1st Saturday in March 1908.  .Written by G. W. Powell

Amy Phipps, born 3/1/1872, died 4/23/1920, was the daughter of Judge Bart Belcher.  She married A. M. Phipps of Prise, Ky.  She was survived by her husband, 6 sons and 2 daughters.  She joined the ORB church and was baptized 5/7/1918 at Praise, KY.  Written by A. L. Belcher

Augusta Belcher, born 1874, died 1/2/1920, was married to G. W. Belcher.  They had nine children.  She was a member of the ORB Church.  Written by her husband, G. W. Belcher.

Fred Clevinger, born 11/25/1838, died 2/19/1920, was married to Polly McCleanahan ca 1860.  They had 10 children, 7 still living.  He joined the ORB Church at Bull Creek ca 1880 and served there as a deacon for the last 25 years of his life.  Four of his children were members of the ORB Church.  Written by G. Nelse Adkins, born 7/20/1861, died 10/21/1919, married Linda Roberson; they had 4 sons, and 2 daughters, 5 still living.  He joined the ORB church at Greasy Creek Church and was a member there about 9 years before moving his letter to Rockhouse Church ca 1915.  Written by Grant Epling

Samuel Yates, born 6/10/1842, died 2/16/1918, married Sarah Deel ca 1865; they had 2 daughters and 5 sons, five still living.  Sarah Deel Yates preceded him in death.  He joined the ORB Church ca 1888 and lived a member until the divide when he went off with the hard shell side and remained with them until he became dissatisfied then he came back by acknowledgement in the presence of the church.  Thereafter he was a member of the Russell Prater Church.  Written by Elder D. James Henderson Quinley, born 3/1/18/46, died 7/11/1919, was survived by his wife, 2 daughters and many grandchildren.  He joined the ORB Church.  He devoted the last 3 years of his life to reading the Bible.  Written by his grandson, Bart B. Belcher

Vesta Stiltner, born on Knox Creek, 2/27/1848, died 3/21/1917, was the daughter of Sammy Smith.  She joined the ORB Church in 1864.  She married William H. Looney; they had no? children.  Wm. H. Looney  "got killed" and she married Jeff Stiltner; they had 2 children, still living, as was Jeff Stiltner.  Written by her youngest son, Green Stiltner.

Josephine Adkins, born in 1861, died 8/3/1923, married Peter Adkins, who was still living..  They had 10 children, 6 still living.  Her youngest daughter died 3/26/1924 and before she died she told her brothers and sisters that she'd seen a beautiful angel in the window and recognized it as her mother, Josephine Adkins.  She had a daughter named Eva who lived in Virginia.  She had a son named Perry.  She indicated that she wanted G. W. Powell, Thomas Thacker, James Sanders and John A. Damron to preach her funeral.
She was a member of the Rock House Church.  Written by Grant Epling.

Pearlie Church, born 9/15/1893, died 11/11/1918, married Huling Church; they had no children.  She joined the ORB Church in 1913.  Her parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister were living at the time of her death; 2 of her brothers had joined the church; the other siblings, "...are still wandering in sin..."  Written by her brother(?), James Church.  

Lewis Church , born 3/7/1851, died 4/24/1924, married Mary Morris, 3/30/1880; they had 6 children, four still living, as was his wife, Mary.  He joined the ORB church in 1918; was baptized by James Church.  Written by his son, James Church

Jane Vanover, born 9/5/1853, died 2/16/1924, was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Bakr.  She married James Vanover 8/1/1873; they had 6 daughters and 4 sons.  She joined the ORB church in July 1892.  She was "afflicted" for several years.  Written by Ira Mullins, Coeburn, VA

Nancy Bentley Adington ,b 1860, died 4/20/1922, was the daughter of Solomon and Matilda Bentley.  She married Elder F. M. Adington in 1880; they had 7 children, 5 living.  She joined the Little Zion ORB Church in 1885.  She had sons named, Johnnie and Calvin.  Written by her daughter Carrie Adington Hall.

Alice Chapman, born 8/24/1875 died 5/2/1917, married Bud Chapman 1888, when she was age 13; they had 4 sons, and 6 daughters, 7 still living.  Apparently her maiden name was May since the writer says she is his beloved sister, although this could mean sister in the church..  She joined the ORB Church in 1914 and was baptized by Mat Justice.  Her husband was not a church member; 2 daughters and 1 son were not church members; the other children were. Hester Smith died at age 90, ca 1924.  She married Jessie Smith who preceded her in death.  They had 9 children, 3 still living.  She joined the ORB Church ca 1864.  Written by J. B. May.

Sarah A. Deel, the daughter of James H. Deel, Sr.and Vicey Deel, was born 3/29/1857, died 4/25/1916.  She married James H. Deel, 9/13/1879; they had 1 daughter.  She joined the ORB Church April 13, 1916 at a church service in her home, held there because she was too ill to attend regular services.  She was carried to the river on a frame and baptized by Elder D. C. Church.  She was survived by her husband, her daughter, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

Melvina Stiltner, born 3/9/1844, died in 1922, was married to G. W. Stiltner.  They had 3 daughters; and 6 sons, 8 children still living.  She joined the Little Mary ORB church in 1915 and was baptized by Elder Mat Justice.  Written by her granddaughter, Eula Stiltner.

Mitchel May,  born 8/22/1834, died 8/27/1924, married Rebecca Blackburn; they had 10 daughters, 3 sons, 8 still living.  He joined the ORB church in 1912.  He went blind in 1921 and "could not help himself."  Written by his daughter, Alabanka Stiltner.

Lottie McCoy Stanley, born 2/7/1882, died 3/14/1924, was the daughter of Marion and Rebecca McCoy.  She married Lee Stanley, 8/2/1906; they had 7 children, 6 still living.  She joined the ORB Church ca 1900.  Her father, husband, 7 children, 7 brothers, and 3 sisters were living at the time of her death.  "She was afflicted for several years but bore her afflictions with patience.  She moved to Elkhorn City, Ky and got burned out and came back to the old home and took very ill and died at the home of her brother, Emory McCoy.  Written by Ira Mullins, Coeburn, Va.

Martha Jane Baker Hash, born 6/2/1861, died 5/14/1928, was married to Charlie Baker in 1877.  Charlie Baker died in 1884.  They had 2 sons and 1 daughter.  Martha Jane Baker married Riley Hash in 1886; they had 6 daughters and 2 sons.  2 children died in infancey.  She was survived by her husband, Riley Hash and 9 children.  She joined the ORB church the 2nd Saturday in November 1905 and was a member until her death.  Written by her son, Samuel J. Baker

Jane Boyd, born 8/29/1940, died 4/26/1887, was the daughter of Stephen and Nancy Coleman.  She married Elisha Boyd, 11/12/1864; they had 6 sons and 2 daughters.  One son preceded her in death.  She joined the ORB Church and was baptized by Elder Lewis Edwards.  Written by her daughter, Martha Ann Deel

Brice. E. Arington, born 4/10/1868, died 11/7/1928, was married to Louisa Deel 4/12/1888.  He was survived by his wife, 3 sons and 4 daughters, all married except the youngest daughter.  He joined the ORB Church 7/4/1897 and was baptized 4/19/1897.  "This was before the divide and he remained a faithful member, and when the divide came he stood firm and lived in the faith until he died."  He had a daughter named Louvenia Viers who owned a store.  The writer states, "So put your trust in Him for He careth for you, and, Ida, remember He is a husband to the widow and a father to the orphan if we only trust Him..."  This suggests that the wife's name was Ida although it is listed earlier as Louisa.  The obituary does not further explain this mystery.  The obituary was written by a close neighbor, M. V. Owens.

John Collins was born ca 1866 and was the father of 8 children.  He was a member of the ORB Church.  Written by his daughter-in-law, Lucy Collins.

Jane Gibson, born 12/231892, died 10/10/1929, was the daughter of Andy and Liddie Bartley.  She married Willie Gibson 9/2/1907; they had 6 sons and 3 daughters.  She was survived by her husband, 4 sons and 2 daughters.  She joined the Pine Grove Church in 1916 and was baptized by Elder Tom Thacker.  Her husband, Willie Gibson was an ORB minister.  Written by J. M. Gibson.

James Gibson, born 1/17/1841, died 7/6/1930, was married first to Almeda Bartley.  They had 8 daughters and 2 sons.  He was survived by 4 daughters and 2 sons.  He enlisted in the Civil War 8/9/1862 and was honorably discharged at the close of the war.  He joined the Pine Grove Church of the ORB ca 1878.  After the death of his first wife, Almeda Bartley Gibson, he married Jane Jeffers who also joined the Pine Grove ORB Church in 1919.  "They both lived faithful members of the Pine Grove Church until they decided to go to the United States Baptist Church.  Then he and Sister Jane were given off in an arm from the Cowpen Church on the 1st Saturday in December 1924 and was organized with the arm that composed the Little Olive Church at Carmen, Ky, of which he lived a faithful member until the death angel called him away."  Written by his nephew, J. M. Gibson.

Filmore Addington, born 3/18/1861, died 10/22/1930, married Nancy Bentley in 1880.  They had 4 daughters and 3 sons, 2 died in infancy, the others are living.  3 of the daughters were members of the ORB Church.  He joined the ORB church and was ordained to preach in 1895.  He preached his last sermon at Bethel Church at a foot washing meeting, using the text: "Thus in one house shall it be eaten."  His sons were named Calvin and Johnny.  Calvin lived in Cincinnati.  The writer states, "Children, I want you to respect, Katie, his wife for she has done all she could for him..."  [This suggests that he may have married a second time although the writer does not make that clear.]  Her final statement is:  "So dear brethren and sisters, each of you pray, down in the grave where father and mother were laid."  Obituary was written by his daughter, Carrie Hall.

Mary D. Rose, born 8/3/1875, died 10/3/1927 was married to Elder Hiram N. Rose 11/24/1892.  She was the daughter of Anna Mullins Robinson who was the daughter of Andrew Jackson "Brandy Jack" Mullins.  She initially joined the Freewill Baptist Church ca 1890 but wanted to be baptized by Elder John E. Rose of the ORB Church, which the Freewill Baptists would not allow.  She then joined the ORB Church and was baptized by Elder John E. Rose and lived in that faith until her death.  She was survived by her husband, 5 sons, John C., Samuel Patton, Swinfield, Ira and Maston and 2 daughters, Lottie Ann McCoy (Mrs. Ted) and Healthy Mullins (Mrs. Willard).  John C. Rose was a member of the ORB Church; the other children were not.  Written in 1931 by her oldest son, John C. Rose.  Additional information provided by her granddaughter, Ginger Rose Senter 6/15/1998.

Marion L. McCoy, born in Wise Co., VA., 7/22/1849, died 4/30/1930, was married to Rebecca Rose in 1871.  They had 7 sons and 4 daughters.  He was survived by 6 sons, 3 daughters and 2 sisters.  He joined the Caney Fork Church of the ORB.  Written by his son, J. L. McCoy.

Charlie Patten McCoy, born 8/27/1883, died 4/4/1931, was buried at his home on Caney Ridge.  "He happened with an accident in his home and was removed to the Clintwood Hospital.  While there an abscess formed on his gall bladder, which caused his death."  He was the son of Marion L. and Rebecca Rose McCoy.  He was survived by his wife and four children.  Written by his brother, J. L. McCoy

Rebecca Rose McCoy, born 9/19/1947, died 9/19/1919, was the daughter of Elder John E. and Charlotte (Birchfield) Rose.  She joined the ORB Church at Sandy Ridge in 1867 and moved her membership to Caney fork in 1872.  "She was a member of the arm that constituted the Caney Fork Church."  She married Marion L. McCoy in 1871; they had 7 sons and 4 daughters, 1 son, Charlie Patten McCoy, and 1 daughter, Lottie McCoy Stanley, preceded her in death.  She was crippled with rheumatism and walked on crutches for 20 years before her death from influenza.  Written by her son J. L. McCoy.

Arch Mullins, born 7/2/1894, died 1/12/1926, was survived by his father, mother, wife and 5 children.  Written by W. M. Cantrell.

Duran Bumgardner, born 2/13/1887, died 6/19/1930, was married to Cora Mullins, the daughter of Sam and Polly Ann Mullins, ca 1910.  They were the parents of 4 sons and 3 daughters, all living.  He died from tuberculosis.  He joined the ORB Church 5/18/1930 and was baptized by Elder Mart Burke, after being carried to the water.  The author of this obituary is not listed.

Hiram N. Rose, born 7/11/1860, died 5/21/1928, joined the ORB Church in 1902 and began to preach shortly thereafter.  He was married first to Malissa Rose; they had 1 child, Viola Rose who married Stuart Hill.  He divorced Malissa Rose 3/13/1888 in Dickenson Co., Va.  He married Mary D. Rose, daughter of Anna Mullins Robinson, 11/24/1892; they had 5 sons, John C., Samuel Patton, Swinfield, Ira and Maston, and 2 daughters, Lottie Ann McCoy(Mrs. Ted) and Healthy Mullins (Mrs. Willard).  He was survived by 9 children; his wife, Mary D. Rose, died 10/31/1927.  Obituary written by his son, John C. Rose, additional information submitted by his granddaughter, Ginger Rose Senter, 6/15/1998. 

Milly Hill, born ca 1852, died 4/15/1931, was married to Cane Hill.  They had 10 children, 8 living.  She was baptized into fellowship of the Mount Olive Church by Elder J. C. Swindall ca 1900.  Written by her son, Basil Hill.

Elder B. B. Hall, born 7/2//1886, died 4/13/1931, was married to Elsie Sanders 11/26/1907; they had 5 sons and two daughters, all living.  He joined the ORB Church the 2nd Saturday in March 1917 and continued in the faith until the 1st Saturday in December 1924 when he joined the United Baptist Church and lived a faithful brother until his death.  He had sons named, Ray and Jack.  Written by Bud Wiley

Wilburn Mullins, born 1/27/1862, died 4/29/1931, was the son of Nelson and Matilda Mullins.  He married first, Annie Mullins, daughter of Jim and Nancy Mullins; they had 7 sons and 3 daughters, 5 still living.  Annie Mullins died in 1916.  Ca 1920, he married Rachel Tackett; they had 3 sons and 2 daughters, all still living.  He was survived by 10 children, his wife, Rachel, 3 brothers and 1 sister.  Written by his daughter-in-law, Alice Mullins.

Dydia Rowe, born 7/9/1881, died 2/21/1931, was the daughter of Mat and Martha Hunt and was married to Ance Rowe.  They had seven sons and four daughters.  She was survived by her parents, her husband and 7 children.  She had daughters named Lacy and Marie.  "She professed a hope in Christ about 32 years ago and lived a faithful member until her death." Written by her sister, Artilla Epling.

Ida Kinney, born 5/7/1910, died 5/7/1930, was the daughter of Cob and Pricy Thacker.  She married Beverly Kinney; they had 3 children.  She was survived by her husband and 2 children.  She died from tuberculosis.  She joined the ORB church but was never well enough to be baptized.  She had siblings named, Parse, Harson and Lizzie.  She was buried in the R. H. Ratliff Cemetery.  Written by B. H. Damron.

Ersel E. Epling, born 5/4/1909, died 3/24/1931, was the son of Johnny and Emily Epling.  "...he was crippled by a log rolling over him when he was just a small boy."  He died from tuberculosis.  He had a brother named Arlon.  Written by Grant Epling.

Ollie Mullins, born 8/8/1855, died 6/23/1928, was the daughter of Marshall and Polly Mullins.  She married A.(Andy) J. Mullins; they had 12 children, 10 still living.  She joined the ORB church ca 1873 and was a member of the Bold Camp Church for about 56 years.  She was survived by her husband 10 children.  2 of her children were members of the ORB church.  Written by Ira Mullins

D. D. Mullins, born 11/12/1855, died 11/26/1930, was the son of W. B. and Sarah Mullins.  He married Becky Maggard and they had six sons and 1 daughter.  He joined the ORB Church at Bold Camp about 55 years ago; he was a minister for 35 years.

Carvil J. Spears, born 10/17/1920, died 9/5/1930, was the son of Mac and Luly Spears.  Written by his grandmother, Josephine Looney.

Hattie Bartley, born 6/10/1926, died 10/11/1929, was the daughter of Hibbard and Gracie Bartley.  She was survived by her parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother.  Her father was not a member of the church; her mother was.  Written by her aunt, Dixie Bartley.

Gilbert Burke, born 11/15/18/46, died 4/27/1831, was the son of Charley and Wes Tiney Burke.  He married Dorcas Mullins, 7/1/1872; they had six sons, all living.  He was baptized into the ORB by Elder W. B. Johnson 9/1/1896 and was ordained a deacon ca 1910.  He had a severe stroke 1 year before his death.  Written by his son, Dallas Burke.

Sarah Ratliff, born 6/29/1843, died 3/26/1931, was married to James Ratliff; they had 10 children, 4 still living.  She joined the ORB Church about 1901 and was baptized by Brother Enoch Belcher and attached herself to the Cedar Grove Church.  Written by Rev. Casby Maynard and by instruction of Bro. I. B. Cantrell.

G. W. Ramsey, born 3/15/1859, died 8/8/1931, was married first to Francis Adkins, widow of Wite Adkins, who had 3 children.  G. W. Ramsey and Francis Adkins Ramsey had 4 sons and 5 daughters, 8 still living.  He married Mary E. Ramsey 12/13/1930.  He was survived by his wife, Mary E. Ramsey, 8 children, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.  Written by his wife, Mary E. Ramsey.

Morgan Wright, born 7/4/1911, died 1/23/1931, was the son of Andy and Polly Wright of Southdown, Ky, members of the Elizabeth ORB Church.  He joined the ORB church a few days before he died but was never well enough to be baptized.  He was survived by his parents, 4 brothers and 5 sisters.  Written by a friend, W. L. Stallard.

Jane Gibson, born 12/25/1893, died 10/1929, was married to Rev. Willie Gibson ca 1907.  They had 10 children, 6 living:  Charles, Kit, Kelcie, Velsie, Lloyd and James.  She died from consumption, which she had suffered for a long time.  She joined the ORB Church at Pine Grove, April 1910.  Written by her sister, Mrs. Mima Childers

Julia Austin McPeak, bon 6/13/1854, died 10/10/1930, was the daughter of Jessee and Margaret Austin.  He married James McPeak; they had 8 children.  She was survived by 5 daughters, 1 son, 1 sister, Mohala Bradley, and 1 brother, David Austin.  She joined the ORB Church in 1874.  Written by her sister Mohala E. Bradley.

Henry J. Looney, born 12/6/1886, died 7/20/1930, was the son of Matthias Looney.  He was survived by his wife, 9 children, and 3 brothers.  He married Ibby Jane Hatfield.  He joined the ORB Church at Russell Prater ca 1920.  Written by his wife, Ibby Jane Looney and daughter-in-law, L. A. Looney.

Kelcey Dotson, born 8/11/1901, deceased 11/5/1930, married McKinely Dotson 5/10/1915; they had six children, 3 still living.  She joined the ORB Church the second Saturday in August 1930 and was baptized by Elder Mat Justice.  She was a member of The Little Stone Church.  She was survived by her husband, 3 children, her mother, step-father, 1 sister, 1 half-sister and 1 half-brother.  

Lorene Gay Mullins, born 9/1/1926, died 2/9/1930.  Written by her mother Lucy Jane Mullins.

Dan Thacker, born 6/12/1856, died 7/17/1931, was married to Sophia Robinson; they had 4 sons and 6 daughters.  Four of the children had joined the ORB Church.  He joined the ORB church the 3rd Saturday in 1909; shortly thereafter he was ordained as a minister.  His father had died when he was 6 years old.  He was buried at the graveyard at the mouth of Lower Pompey.  Written by his son, J. Nona B.Coleman Damron, born 1/8/1883, died 12/31/1930, was the daughter of Richard and Mohala R. Coleman.  She married John A. Damron 3/27/1901; they had 5 daughters, and 4 sons; 1 daughter died in infancy; the other died of measles 9/1923.  She joined the ORB Church the first Sunday in July, 1906 and was baptized by Elder George W. Powell.  Her husband was a minister.  She was survived by 2 sisters.  Written by John A. Damrom.

Rebecca Damron, born 4/19/1842, died 3/5/1930, was married to Robert Damron who preceded her in death by about 3 years.  They had 5 sons and 7 daughters, 9 still living.  She joined the ORB Church ca 1874 and was baptized by Elder Bill McCown.  She was a member of the Greasy Creek Church.  This obituary was written by Nona B. Damron in August 1930, submitted after her death for publication by her husband, John A. Damron.

Lee Compton, born 8/1/1863, died 2/19/1938, was born and reared on Island Creek.  His wife's was named Susie, she preceded him in death.  Apparently late in their lives, Susie and Lee Compton lived with Ben H. Bentley until both Comptons died.  Lee Compton had 1 son, 2 sisters and 1 brother living at the time of his death.  He joined the ORB Church at Rock House ca 1934.  His funeral was preached in April 1939 by John Thacker, Winston May and Lawrence Adkins.  Written by Ben H. Artie Farmer, born 12/16/1861, died 11/7/1937.  She had 4 children, 2 still living.  She joined the Samaria ORB Church ca 1910.  Written by her daughter, Rilda Smallwood

Cynthia Farmer, born 3/9/1856 died 1/22/1925, was married to Floyd Turner in 1870.  They had 8 sons and 1 daughter.  She joined the ORB church ca 1873.  She was in the divide that came between us and the Hard Shells.  She stayed with the Church and was a faithful member until God called her home.  Written by B. H. Baker.

Callie Vanover McCoy, born 7/21/1886, died 8/26/1938, was the daughter of Allen and Susie Vanover.  She married Dee McCoy, 3/14/1907; they had 8 children, with 1 son and 3 daughters still living.  She was a member of the ORB Church.  This was her request to put on her tombstone: "Remember me as you pass by, as you are now so once was I' as I am now, you soon shall be, so prepare to follow me."  Her funeral was preached in August 1939 by J. C. Swindall, B. H. Baker, J.W.A. Stallard, W. R. Hale, Carson Dotson and Richmond Stanley.  Written by H. E. McCoy

Cinda Stidham, born 3/20/1904, died 2/6/1937, was the daughter of James and Ida Bolling.  She married Jim Stidham, 4/20/1921; they had 5 children, 4 still living, as were her parents and her husband.  She joined the Stephen's Chapel ORB Church 4/8/1934.  She died of Meningitis.  Written by her sister, Maggie Gardner.

James Edward (Ed) Baker, born 10/13/1882, died 1/21/1938, married Rosa Keel, 7/12/1904; they had 8 sons and 4 daughters, all still living.  He joined the ORB church and was baptized in 1915 by Elder Ira Mullins.  He began preaching in 1917 and served the Lebanon Church as moderator from 1928-1938.  On his death bed he said to his wife, "Mama, there is the little angels that I told Junior was coming after me.  Tell the boys that I am going on home and for them to come and go along with me."  Written by his bereaved companion, Rosa Keel Baker.  [The children of James Edward (Ed) Baker and Rosa Keel Baker include, Garfield Baker, Earl Baker, Grady Baker, Hardaway Baker, Walter Baker, Stewart Baker, Myrtle Mullins and  Effie Baker Farmer Molinary, all of the Clintwood, VA. area ]

Albert Cantrell, born /8/1860 and died 2/3/1838, was the son if Isaac Cantrell.  He married Sylvia Helton ca 1881; they had 8 sons and 2 daughters.  He joined the ORB church and was baptized 5/30/1837.  His dying words were:  "I am ready to go; there is nothing in my way.  Tell my children to meet me in heaven."  This obituary has no author listed.

Frona Sowards, born 5/30/1910, died 3/3/1938, was the daughter of Creed and Liza Ann Sowards.  She joined the ORB church 5/31/1933 and was baptized by Richard Stanley.  "This little sister was afflicted at the age of four years, leaving her a cripple for life." Written by Bertha Addington.

Phoebe Deel, born in 1845, did 12/23/1936, was the daughter of George and Sarah Fuller.  She married to Willoughby Deel in 1864; they had 2 sons and three daughters, 2 sons and 2 daughters preceded her in death.  She joined the ORB church in 1916.  She and her husband were ordained Deacon and deaconess in Jan 1917.  Written by L. T. Blankenship.

Tommy Alvin Elkins, born 4/29/1937, died 2/1938, was the only son of W.Creighton. and Mary Mullins Elkins.  He died of pneumonia.  His mother was a member of the ORB church; his father was not, nor was his uncle who wrote the obituary, T. Alvin Mullins.

Lizzie Blair, born 2/24/1872, died 7/6/1938, had one sister, Mollie (Mrs. John) Rasnick and at least one brother, Bill ??, who lived in Cincinnati.  She was the mother of 6 children.  She was a member of the ORB church.  One of her sons may have been named, Charles.  Written by her sister, Mrs. John R. Rasnick.

Maggie V. Owens, born 3/13/1861, died 2/23/1938, was the daughter of Jefferson and Margaret Presley.  She married W. C. Owens ca 1920; they had 12 children, 9 still living.  She joined the Russel Prater ORB church in 1901 and "...lived a true Christian life until her dream was fulfilled.  She dreamed she was in the room in which she died with one of her sisters in Christ, whom she loved dearly, to-wit: Catherine Kiser.  While asleep she seemed in fear and told mother she beheld something.  Mother put her arms around her and tried to comfort her and told her to fear not...but she looked and beheld a man in white rainment in a cloud.  She spoke to him and asked him what he wanted.  He answered, 'I am your Lord and Savior, Jusus Christ, and have come to require your soul, giving a date, which included a 6.  She thought it would be 6:00 the next morning, though we believed it was in her 56th year.  She woke daddy rejoicing in her sleep.  He asked her what was wrong.  Then she told him this sweet dream.  She then was perfectly calm and filled with joy for she had suffered long and prayed to die.  They slept no more during the night, thinking she would meet her Savior at 6:00 the following morning although her call didn't come until her 56th year."  Written by her daughter, Marjory Looney

Hattie Collier Potter, born 6/23/1902, died 3/13/1937.  She married R. B. Potter in 1922; they had 2 daughters and 4 sons, all living.  Her parents, her husband, and 1 sister were still living at the time of her death.  "Hattie suffered with ulcers of the stomach for about 3 years; then she underwent an operation at the Seco hospital from which she never recovered.  While in the hospital, she professed a hope in Christ and joined the Elizabeth Church of the ORB."  Written by her father, E. I. Collier.

Hattie Hogg, born 12/23/1882, died 7/29/1938, married George W. Hogg in 1899.  They had 7 children, all living at the time of her death, as well as her husband..  She joined the ORB church in 1918 and was baptized by Haynes Maynard.  Written by her daughter, Edna Baldwin.

Polly Jane Blankenship, born 12/24/1871, died 8/14/1932, was the daughter of Henry and Nancy Owens.  She Married Emory Deel ca 1885; they had 5 sons and 5 daughters; 5 children as well as her first husband preceded her in death.  She joined the ORB church in 1914 and was a member until her death.  Her second husband was L. T. Blankenship.  She died 7 hours after the event, from an injury received when thrown from the back of a mule.  Written by her son, Garland Deel.

Nancy Cantrell, born 12/25/1843, died 5/27/1838, was the daughter of Wilson and Rebecca Mullins.  She married John Cantrell, 6/17/1864; they had 11 children, 6 living.  She joined the ORB church 6/22/1865 and was a member for 73 years.  Written by J. H. Boggs.

Sarah Bartley, b 2/29/1848, died 9/29/1936, was married to Elihu Bartley.  They had 8 sons and 5 daughters, 7 still living.  She joined the Pine Grove ORB Church ca 1878.  Her husband preceded her in death.  Written by J. M. Gibson

Larkin Clevinger, born 12/22/1875 died 4/27/1938, was the son of John W. and Malvira Clevinger.  He joined the ORB church and was baptized 6/9/1918 by D. C. Church into the fellowship of Bull Creek Church.  He was ordained deacon, 5/10/1919.  He married Louisa Victoria ? Clevinger; they had 2 sons and 6 daughters, all still living, as was his wife.  Written by his son, John Clevinger.

Henry Niece, born 6/30/1857, died 12/8/1937, was married first to Vina Caudill, 8/3/1882.  They had 4 sons and 1 daughter; 2 sons preceded him in death, and his first wife, Vina Caudill, died 8/6/1901.  Her married Rebecca Madden 8/1902 and they had 3 children, 1 still living.  Written by his son, James Niece.

Mary Zilpha Boggs, born 12/25/1875, died 2/8/1934, was the daughter of James and Sidno Robinson.  She married Eli Boggs in 1896; they had 7 sons and 3 daughters, 4 sons and 3 daughters still living, as was her husband.  She joined the ORB church in August 1917 and was baptized by Ira Mullins.  Written by her daughter, Savannah Mullins.

Ambrose Wilson Hay, born 7/5/1865, died 6/22/1636, was married to Elizabeth ? Hay (1/9/1869-1/6/1937),  He never joined the church.  His wife joined the ORB church at Turner Church in 1920 and was a member until her death.  They had 11 children, 9 living in 1937.  Written by his son, Cecil Hay.

Helen Burchet Large, born 4/10/1869 in Lawrence Co., KY, died ??, married G. W. Large, 10/14/1886.  They had 6 sons and 4 daughters, 2 died in infancy, 7 still living, as was her husband.  She was a member of the ORB church since age 14.  Written by her husband, G. W. Large.

John C. Wright, born 1/2//1906, died 6/23/1938, was the son of James and Cora Wright.  He married Mayme Sturgill, 2/21/192?; they had 1 child, Gloria Wright, still living, as was his wife and his mother.  He joined the ORB church and was baptized 11/15/1936.  He had to be carried to the baptizing on a stretcher.  He had a sister named, Hazel, who helped care for him in his last illness.  Written by B. H. Baker.

Peter B. Adkins, born 6/16/1858, died 12/8/1937, married Josephine Breeding Adams in 1878.  They had 5 sons and 5 daughters, 2 sons and 3 daughters were still living; his wife preceded him in death.  He was a member of the Rockhouse Ky ORB church.  Two of his daughters were members of the church.  He had a son, Eary, who brought him to the church for his last Communion Service.  He had a daughter named, Eva Hill, who cared for him during his last illness.  Written by Grant Epling

Wiley Mullins, born 1874, died 1/29/1938, was a member of the ORB church.  His son enjoyed hearing him sing hymns.  He died of kidney trouble.  He had 2 sons and 2 daughters living at the time of his death, as was his wife.  One son was named Patton.  Patton was a member of the ORB church, as was his son, Luther, who wrote the obituary, which did not list any other details as to his wife's name, nor any other children's names.

Mollie Mullins, born 3/1864, died 3/1938, was married to Harvey Mullins in 1882.  They had 11 children, 7 living.  She joined the ORB church in 1894 and was a member until her death.  One son was named, Bennie.  Her daughters were church members; her sons were not.  Written by John M. Mullins.

Nathaniel Rose, born 10/18/63, died 12/18/1937, was married to Margaret Ann Rose, 4/11/1895.  They had 8 sons and 5 daughters, 6 sons and 2 daughters still living.  He never joined a specific church but believed in the ORB faith and attended ORB church meetings.  Written by E. J. Rose [Nathaniel Rose was the son of Swinfield Rose and Nancy Wallace.  Swinfield Rose was the son of Elder John E. Rose, son of Elias Rose.]

Hannah Bowling, born 10/25/1861, died 12/1/1935, married Dan Bowling, 12/12/1881.  They had 6 sons and 2 daughters, a son, Henry, age 6, preceded her in death, as did her husband who died in 1911.  She joined the ORB church in 1863 and took fellowship with Pine Grove Church at Lookout, Pike Co., Ky.  Her sons were named, Heen, Don, Dover, Mont and Boone; her daughters, Mary and Orph.  Written by her son, Boone Bowling.  

Lectie E. Kiser Rose, born 3/12/1902, died 7/24/1931 [following gall bladder surgery], was the daughter of Eugene and Sarah Kiser.  She married John C. Rose [the son of Elder Hiram N. Rose], 7/24/1920; they had five children [Virgie, Carson, Delbert, Hiram Jack and Ava Nell], all living, as were her parents and her husband.  She and her sister, Minnie R. Kiser Hylton both joined the ORB church and were baptized the same day by Elder Ira Mullins, in July 1930.  She apparently had another sister named, Bessie.  Her sister, Minnie R. Kiser died a year before Lectie, [also in child birth].  Written by Rev. B. H. Baker.  

Minnie R. Kiser Hilton, born 8/30/1904, died 12/29/1930 [following childbirth], was the daughter of Eugene and Sarah Kiser.  She married James R. Hilton in 1921; they had 5 children, all living, as were her parents and her husband.  She joined the ORB church and was baptized by Elder Ira Mullins in July 1930, the same day as her sister, Lectie.  She apparently had another sister named Bessie.  Written by Reb. B. H. Baker.

Elizabeth Hollyfield, born 9/1844, on Bold Camp Creek in Wise Co., VA., died 1935, was the daughter of David and Virginia Short Mullins.  She married Bartley Hollyfield, also of Bold Camp, in 1863.  She joined the ORB church in her youth and was a member until her death.  She was totally blind the last years of her life.  She was the mother of 5 children; 2 died in infancy, 2 still living.  Her son, Marlin A. Hollyfield died in Jan. 1916 at age 33.  Her daughter, Mrs Nancy A. Mullins, was living in 1938.  Her son, William Jefferson Hollyfield, age 74, was still living in 1938; he had been a member of the ORB church for many years.  Her husband, also a member of the ORB church, died in 1912, at age 72.  She lived with her son, Marlin, until his death, then lived most of the time with a granddaughter, Mrs. Arminta Hollyfield Potter.  Written, Daniel Bartley Hollyfield, her grandson whom she had reared, along with his two sisters, Arminta and ??, after their mother's death when Daniel Bartley Hollyfield was 8 years old.

Cordelia Amburgey, born 1862, died 1/31/1938, joined the ORB church in 1896, at the Rebecca Church on Beaver.  Apparently the Thornton Church was her home church.  Written by daughter, Carrie Amburgey.  [The obituary includes a long note written by Cordelia Amburgey 2 years before her death, in which she admonishes her children not to grieve for her and to meet her in heaven.  No other family details].

Julia Hogston Sexton, born 7/28/1877, died 3/13/1938, was the daughter of William and Virginia Bentley Hogston.  She married Dave Sexton who died in 1932; they had 11 children, 7 still living, all married.  Written by Polly C. Webb.

Ben Jack Adams, born 4/3/1856, died 6/21/1938, married Elizabeth Craft, known as "Aunt Lincoln," at an early age.  They had 8 sons and four daughters, 1 son died young; his wife preceded him in death.  He joined the ORB church at Thornton ca 1902 and was ordained to preach afterward.  He made his home with his daughter, Delcie who married Byron Kincer.  Written by James L. Wright.

Green Amburgey, born 5/16/1863, died 2/5/1938, was married to Rose Bowen.  They had one child, both Rose Bowen Amburgey and their child preceded him in death.  He married Pollyann Everidge, who was still living, as was his brother, Seymore Amburgey of Bath, KY.  He left the following inscription on the back of his songbook:  "God forgave my sins, March 23, 1932 and I joined the Mayking Baptist Church, April 17, 1932 and was baptised (sic), May 22, 1932."  Written by his brother, Wesley Amburgey

B. F. Smallwood, born 10/26/1854, died 2/20/1933, married Elizabeth Adams.  They had 9 children, 8 living.  He joined the ORB church 10/3/1901 and was a member until his death; he was an Elder.  Written by his son, Adam Smallwood.

John Hopkins, born in Ashe Co., NC, on 12/27/1854, died 11/8/1924, was the son of W. R. and Rosa Phillips Hopkins.  His parents moved to the Beaver section of Ky.  In 1872, he married Hannah Osborn.  He and his wife joined the Joppa Church in June 1873.  He entered the ministry in October 1873 and was ordained an Elder shortly thereafter.  Rosa P. Hopkins died 11/8/1924; he married Rebecca Turner, who passed away 1/25/1926.  On 5/5/1626, he married Ollie Osboren, who survived him along with sons, John, Melvin, Joseph and Solomon of Wise, Va. and daughters, Mrs. R. L. Baker of Keokee, Va, and Mrs. J. L. Newsome of Vergie, KY, 54 grandchildren, and 76 great grandchildren.  Written by G. Bennet Adams.
