DELINQUENT
TAX LISTS FOR WASHINGTON CO VA 1835, 1836, 1840, 1841,
AND 1842 from WCV
UNFILED COURT RECORDS by D. E.
Brown, WCV Hist. Soc., Abingdon
24 Nov 2011 Have you ever
wondered where so-and-so went
when he or she dropped off the Personal or Land Tax
Lists when studying
WCV? Could
the person have died... have
moved...? Even
more likely is the fact
that they probably did not pay their taxes for that
year. Unfortunately,
the delinquent lists do NOT
accompany the PPTLs or Land Tax Lists available at the
Archives of VA. I
recently (Nov 2011) visited the Historical
Society of WCV at Abingdon where several of these
delinquent (likely personal
property tax delinquencies) lists were located among the
volumes meticulously
compiled by D. E. Brown (who, I am told, had rescued the
documents from the
bell tower of the WCV courthouse). There
are a surprisingly high number of delinquents,
representing many of the more
esoteric inhabitants of the county who frequently do not
bear mention in many
of the county’s records.
Therefore,
these lists are especially useful to researchers. It is hoped that additional lists
are available which can be also
transcribed. The following are drawn from said volumes: A
