Brent Catholic Cemetery

Contributed by: Homer Musselman
This cemetery is located off Telegraph Road (Route #637) about a half mile from the Crucifix on Route #1. Follow a private road on the right of Telegraph Road for about a half mile to the cemetery. The cemetery is surrounded by an eight foot chain link fence. The following was copied from the placate in the Cemetery: "In 1750 a group of Jesuit missionaries came from Spain to bring Christ's gospel to the Indians in this country. At first they did not know exactly in what part of the country they had settled, however, it was in the Aquia region of Stafford County, Virginia, near Aquia Creek. Our Lady of Ajacan, the first Christian Temple in our northern land, Luis De Quiros, Priest; Baptista Mendez and Gabriel De Solis, Scholastics; 4 Feb 1751; Juan Baptista De Segura; Priest Christobal Rendondo, Scholastic; Pedro Linares, Gabriel Gomez, and Sancho Zebalics, Brothers, for their Christian teachings were treacherously slain by the natives, the last five on 9 Feb 1751, all of the Society of Jesus. They had labored nobly for the Greater Glory of God and died joyously as they had lived."

Later research published in The Spanish Jesuit Mission in Virginia, 1570-1572 states these early missionaries landed near Williamsburg on a tributary of the York River and not on Aquia Creek. The information is included in this book since the cemetery is located in Stafford County.
