1.  RICHARD1 FRITTER

Notes for RICHARD FRITTER:

The name 2 CONT was known in early Normandy. England, however, has been the home of the Fritt ers since at least 1290 so it can properly be said that the family is English.

Many Fritter families were living in or around London during the sixteenth, sevententh and eighteenth centuries. John was the first of that name to emigrate to the Colony of Virginia w here he took up residence in Stafford Co. prior to 1728.

Four English public records relating to men bearing the name John Fritter are thought to be relevent and are quoted:

In 1697 John Fritter married Elizabeth Lee in St. James Church, Dukes Place, London.

In 1712 John Fritter, son of Richard, deceased, became an apprentice to Charles MacCullock, Citizen and Haberdasher of London.

In 1721 John Fritter completed his apprenticeship. He is described as being the son of Richar d Fritter, late of Soho, London, bricklayer, deceased.

In 1712 John Fritter married Ann Stocks of St. Benet & Peter2 CONT London 4 Aug. 1717. He wa s from Christ2 CONT A  John Fritter is listed in the 1785 enumeration of the inhabitants of S tafford Co. and is the only person there listed bearing the Fritter name. The 1807 and 1810 Personal Property Tax List fo r

Stafford Co. shows that a John Fritter was granted an exemption from paying taxes for those years. Such exemptions were usually granted to ill persons or persons of great age. The compi ler is of the opinion that he was a son of John Fritter, the immigrant. A child of Richard Fritte r , bricklayer of London, England, the name of his wife not being known:

Notes for JOHN FRITTER:

Four English public records relating to men bearing the name John Fritter are thought to be

relevent and are quoted:

In 1721 John Fritter completed his apprenticeship. He is described as being the son of Richar d

Fritter, late of Soho, London, bricklayer, deceased.

In 1712 John Fritter married Ann Stocks of St. Benet & Peter2 CONT London 4 Aug. 1717. He wa s from Christ2 CONT Except for the names of their wives, one of these men could have been on e and the same person

as the John Flitter (whose wife was named Elinor) who patented land in Stafford Co., Va. in

1728. Of course, Elinor may have been John2 CONC t

there is no evidence that such is the case.

In the record office of Sussex there are wills and other documents of Fritters, some dating t o

1290. Before moving to London, these Fritters lived in the small towns of Wellington, Denton,

Arlington and others. There is a small town nearby named Fritterbanks.

On 26 Feb. 1728 John Flitter was issued a patent for 555 acres of land in Stafford Co., Va. O n 1

May 1759 Stafford County was divided to form Fauquier County and Flitter2 CONT of the new cou nty.

One can only speculate as to why the name 2 CONC tter.

A logical explanation may be that Lord Fairfax2 CONT understood John Fritter2 CONC n

his speech. Thus spoken, 2 CONT This confusion in spelling continued for at least 25 years a s evidenced by the entries in 2 CONC e

Register of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Va.2 CONT JOHN FRITTER. He was born in Engl and ca 1690 and married firstly, (in England)

Ann Stocks, 4 Aug. 1717. Secondly, he married Elinor Davis (or Davies) in Stafford Co., Va. , ca

1724. He died in Stafford Co. ca 1736 where his will was probated in that year.

5.  JOHN4 FRITTER (MOSES3, JOHN2, RICHARD1)36 was born September 18, 1752 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford, Virginia36,37,38, and died 181539.

Notes for JOHN FRITTER:

alt B date - Sep 1752

The four most likely sons of John Fritter were Ephraim, Barnett, Travers and Bartlett. The 18 50

Stafford Co. census taker recorded Barnett Fritter as Family Number 19, Ephraim Fritter as

Family Number 21, Travers Fritter as Family Number 56 and Bartlett Fritter as Family Number

136. The total number of families visited was 752. It is clear that these four men lived in c lose

proximity to each other which might indicate that there was a close relationship. The birthda tes of

the four could give some indication that they were brothers when one considers that Bartlet t was

born in 1789, Ephraim in 1790, Barnett in 1792 and Travers in 1797.  (DATES DON2 CONT Also, i t is a persuasive fact that three of the four, Ephraim, Barnett and Travers, served together

in the 45th. Regiment of the Virginia Militia during the War of 1812. Bartlett was too youn g to

have served.

Further, family tradition holds that Henry B. Fritter, a grandson of Bartlett Fritter, who ma rried

Lucie Enfield Bradshaw, a grandaughter of Barnett Fritter, were second cousins, thus adding

weight to the assumption that Bartlett and Barnett were brothers.

Considering the foregoing facts, presumptions, and traditions, the compiler has concluded tha t

Ephraim, Barnett, Bartlett and Travers Fritter were brothers and that their father was John F ritter

who was born in 1752 as stated in the Overwharton Parish Register.

Notes for EPHRAIM FRITTER:

i.EPHRAIM. He was born in 1790 as is indicated by the 1850 census of Stafford Co.,

where he is recorded as being 60 years of age and living alone in house numbered 21 in close

proximity to house numbered 19 occupied by his presumed brother, Barnett. He served in the Wa r

of 1812 in the 45th. Regiment of the Virginia Militia under the command of Col. Samuel H.

Peyton. His death is recorded in the Fritter/Fant/Bradshaw Family Bible, now in the possessio n of

the compiler. The Bible record is as follows:

2 CONT His will dated 31 July 1861 was admitted to probate in the Stafford court and does no t mention

any children. His brother, Barnett, was one of the witnesses to his will and its executor. Th e will

devised a life estate in his real property to Morgan Brooks, the husband of his grandaughter,

America, Elias Brooks and John English. He made a $100.00 bequest to Nancy Byram, the wife

of Daniel Byram. The remainder of his estate he gave to his brothers and sisters but failed t o name

them. The will proves that he had sisters, but unfortunately, their names are not known.

Notes for TRAVERS FRITTER:

iv.TRAVERS. He was born in 1787 as is indicated by the 1850 census record of Stafford

Co. where he is shown to have been 53 years of age. It is likely that he was married, as th e 1840

census of Stafford Co. lists a female age 40 to 50 living with him. It also stated that he wa s blind.

No children have been identified and it is believed that he was childless.

The Muster Rolls show that he served during the War of 1812 in Captain William H. Fitzhugh2 C ONT Company, 45th. Regiment of the Virginia Militia commanded by Col. Samuel H. Peyton. He is

listed in the 1840 Census of Pensioners as being age 43. It is probable that he lost his sigh t during

his service in the militia.

Notes for WILLIAM P. FRITTER:

In the 1850 census he was living with Gustavus B. Fritter and family making it probable tha t he is Gustavus' brother.

In the 1840 census Bartlett lists 2 sons age 10 to 15. Gustavus would have been 18 and Willia m would have been 15. While this isn't an exact fit we know Gustavus was Bartlett and Pricey' s son through marriage records.

There are 2 William FRITTER's born in1823-1825. I THINK these are his parents but I am not po sitive at this time.

The possibility exists but has not been shown at this point that John H. Fritter and John E . Fritter existed with similarly named spouses and children and similar birthdates, but curre nt evidence seems to point to them all as the same person. There are so many John Fritters, e specially in this time period that it becomes extremely confusing. If only they could have be en more imaginative!

The marriage record raises a question about Emma's parentage.  What Hollye posted was this:

    Subject: FRITTER - STONE marriage

I can add a little additional information about the FRITTER - STONE marriage in the

list of Stafford County marriages so helpfully transcribed by Hollye.

ALLEN GARRISON FRITTER  was born 5 July 1858 in Stafford County, Virginia1,

and died 8 May 1912 in Stafford County, Virginia. He married EMMA JANE

    STONE2 16 January 1882 in Stafford County, Virginia2.  She was born May 1860 in Virginia3 ,

and died Aft. 13 January 1920 in Stafford County, Virginia.

The marriage record says that Emma Jane was the daughter of George Stone.  I do not

know whether this is correct.  In the 1880 census, she is listed as daughter in the

household of Fielding Barton Stone. She is not listed in the household of Fielding and

Ann K. (Schooler) Stone in the 1860 census, though if she was really born in May

1860 she should have been.  The 1870 census of Stafford County, Virginia, shows F.

    B. Stone (41), a farmer with $2000 in real property and $250 in personal property.

Ann M. (39) is keeping house.  Morison V. (28) and Emma (9) live with them.  So if

she is the child of George Stone, he must have let her live in the Fielding Barton

    Stone household.

Stafford County records show that Allen G. Fritter was born on 5 July 1858 in that

county to James and Sarah Fritter. His father, a farmer living in Stafford County,

reported Allen's birth (p. 23, line 10). The 1900 census puts Allen's birth in July

    1857.

The 1900 census of Stafford County, Virginia, lists Allen G. Fritter (42) as a farmer

in the Rock Hill District. He was born in July 1857 and has been married for 17 years

to Emma J. (40, born in May 1860). She has had 6 children, all of them living:

Harvey N. (16, a farm laborer, born in September 1883), Herman A. (14, born in

March 1885, attending school), Mitchell G. (13, born in September 1886, in school),

Elwood T. (10, born in June 1889, in school), Ethel M. (7, born in July 1892), and

Vera E. (1, born in October 1898). They all are listed as born in Virginia to parents

    born in Virginia (page 9A, e.d. 90, household 167).

The 1910 census of Stafford County, Virginia, lists Alley G. Fritter (50) with his wife

Emma (49). They have been married for 28 years, the first marriage for each. "Alley"

is a farmer in the Rock Hill area. Emma has had 6 children, all of whom are living. At

home are daughter Ethel J. (15), son Herman (25), who is working as a clerk at

"Corby bread" and is listed as married for 1 year with no children, and daughter Vera

(11). They all report being born in Virginia (ED 107, p. 6B, household 103).

Robert Kerns, a FRITTER researcher, posted this information online: Allie Garrison

Fritter died on 8 May 1912 in Stafford, VA. Allie married Emma Jane Stone. She

    died after 1924.

The 1920 census of Stafford County, Virginia, lists Emma J. Fritter (56) as the

widowed head of her household in the Rock Hill District.  Her daughter Ethel (29) is

    single (e.d. 114, p. 6B, household 129, enumerated on 13 January 1920).
