My father Theodore died in 1955 at age 36 so my information is coming from my 84 yr old mother. SURNAMES: SMYTH
Marshall Smyth Wednesday, February 17, 1999
Hi, I'm Marshall Smyth, and I'm wondering if Smyth County is pronounced like Smith, or if it's pronounced like Smyth---rhyming more with might. Has there ever been a change in the pronunciation? Who is Smyth county named after? During the civil war, was it an independent county? I noticed it is approximately circular in shape. This is unusual. Would you be so kind as to tell me why it is shaped so? I know I'm a northerner, but I surely do have an appreciation for the genteel ways of Virginia. I lived in Norfolk for awhile, many years ago, and enjoyed it there very much. I may be the oldest son of the oldest son of the oldest son of the person Smyth County is named after. I'd like to check in on that. Thank you for your time. Marshall Hugh Smyth, Descended from men with the first names of Moses.

SURNAMES: MAYS * SCOTT
Robert H. (Bob) Mayse Saturday, January 30, 1999
SNIDER BURTON MAYS is cited in the 1860 Smyth County census as Snider B. Mays, a fifty-five year old carpenter in the town of Marion. NOTHING more is as yet evident about his activities in Smyth County. If present, Snider is unrecognizable in the VA censuses of 1850 & 1840, although his apparently estranged wife (ELIZABETH SCOTT) & at least two of his three known children (JOSEPH JACKSON & ELIZA JANE) resided during 1850 in adjacent Wythe County. Prior to 1860, the last known record of Snider developed in 1836, when he sold a house, two lots, & furniture in the community of Mt. Airy, in Wythe near the Smyth County line, to James W. Sheffey. Although none of the family is evident in the 1840 VA census, Snider is present in the 1830 Wythe County census. Prior to that, a court record indicates his 1825 presence to have been in Pittsylvania County, where it is believed that he was born & raised. Snider's wife Elizabeth & son 'Jackson' are present in the 1850 Wythe census . . . both by such time identified by a CHANGED surname spelling, MaysE. Jackson, his wife, & children left VA for TN, about 1859. The last VA record found for this Mays>MaysE family reflected the 1866 marriage in Wythe of Eliza Jane Mayse to Joseph M. Collins. My e-mail address of ihr@fbg.net awaits your input. Many thanks from Bob Mayse of Fredericksburg, TX.
