SURNAMES: BAKER
Mara Fisk Wednesday, September 23, 1998
There is a tradition in my family that my Baker ancestors came from either Smyth or Wythe Co. in VA and settled in Boone Co., AR in the early to mid 1800's. My ggggrandfather's name was Andrew Baker, don't have wife's or parents' names on him. Andrew had a farm located north of Harrison in Boone Co. at Bear Creek Springs. I know he had a brother named Felix S. Baker who received a land patent in Boone Co. in 1861. There was also a sister, Letitia, who married W. H. "Bill" Cecil in Harrison, Boone Co., AR. Andrew's son was Levi Francis Baker, no dates, who married Mary Ann Whitlock (dau. of Jasper J. and Sarah Whitlock) of Marion Co., AR in 1875. My grandfather, Felix Jasper Baker was born in 1888 in Boone Co. Unfortunately, both my maternal grandfather and grandmother are deceased and my Mom is 81 years old, so remembering isn't easy for her. If any of this looks familiar, I would love to correspond (would love to anyway). Not knowing precisely where the family came from in Virginia makes searching back there much more difficult. Look forward to hearing from anyone who thinks we might have a connection. Best regards, Mara Fisk, New Orleans, LA

I am researching my grandfather Harold (Hyter?sp.) CRABTREE b. 1857, Smyth Co. d. 1918 Mercer Co., WV. He married Mary Margaret MARTIN b. 1869 Russell Co., VA d. 1929. A Harold CRABTREE, 4yrs old was listed in the 1860 Census for Seven Mile Ford, Smyth Co. His father was listed as Charles S. CRABTREE. I am looking for some verification of a connection and other possible family members. Harold and Mary Margaret had 3 sons, Carl, Arba (my father) and Leonard CRABTREE. Mary's first husband was John Leander HARRIS. One of their daughters, Virginia Louvicie HARRIS, married George Washington CRABTREE. They lived on Brushy Mountain for a while, George Washington Crabtree died during the flu epidemic of 1918. He was a stone mason and worked in Bluefield area at the time of his death. I would appreciate any information on these two CRABTREE lines as well as the HARRIS and MARTIN families. I would also be interested in a list of Crabtrees that lived on Seven Mile Ford and of their history in this area. Thanks. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Denise AsburySun, 22 Mar 1998
Hello, I am looking for the name of Sherrod Preston James's parents. I have found the spelling of his name to come in many different forms. (Shearod, Sherwood, Sherod). The family is from Smyth County, I believe the Seven Mile Ford area. He was born September 17, 1835. I believe he might have had a older brother named David E. James and several younger brothers and sisters. In the 1850 Census records of Smyth Co., Sherrod was listed as Sherwood P. He is living with a James James and his wife Rebecca. In a family bible it has his parents as Josiah James and Rebecca Grubb but I cannot find those exact names for his parents on any documentation. I have found on a Virginia marriage CD, that a James James married a Rebecca Whisman in 1831. I am wondering if this could be Sherrod's parents instead of Josiah James and Rebecca Grubb. The person who wrote the information in the bible has past away and I don't know where she got her information. Sherrod P. James is my great, great, great, grandfather. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

SURNAMES: HUMPHREY * LYON *
Gary D. Kline Mon, 23 Feb 1998
My wife's gg-grandfather was Horatio Winsted HUMPHREY who, according to his grandaughter, was born on 17 Apr 1828 "near the big salt works" in VA. (Freddie Spradlin tells me this could be either Saline, Kanawha Co, WV or Saltville, Smythe Co. VA.) His father is said to be Elijah HUMPHREY. His six siblings were: Elizabeth, Amanda, Paulina, Francis, Maggie, and Edward. The name of their mother is unknown. Elijah appears as buying land in Pike Co. IL in 1835. Horatio went on the Gold Rush to Ca in 1849 and "returned" to Pike Co. to marry Margaret Ann LYON (b. 28 Nov 1833 in Hampshire Co. WV). there on 15 Dec 1853. They moved to KS, and he returned to IL to enlist in the Union Army. A William HUMPHREY appears on this web site as a Revolutionary Patriot; he might be a forebear of Elijah and Horatio. Hoping to hear from someone!
