Shenandoah County Continental Soldiers
The following soldiers, or their widows, were granted pensions in Shenandoah County

(not all of these were Revolutionary War soldiers, some were earlier and some were later)

Finlar, Frederick, under command of Colonel Abraham Bluford, wounded at battle of Guilford
Fravell, Dennis, 11th Virginia Regiment
Downsen, Henry, under command of Colonel Adam Stephen, wounded at Grant's defeat in 1758
Griffin, Martin, 12th Virginia Regiment, wounded at Guilford Courthouse in 1781
McGovern, James, 8th Virginia Regiment, killed in Seige of '96, Eleanor McGovern was his widow
Hoy, John, Sgt. Major, 8th Virginia Regiment, died Nov 3, 1776 at Sunberry in Georgia
Ferrell, Dennis O., 11th Virginia Regiment, wounded in the foot at the Battle of Brandywine, crippled
Grandstaff, Edward, wife Elizabeth Grandstaff
Tipton, William, wife Mary Tipton
McGee, George, wife Lydia McGee
Bezas, Randolph, wife Katherine Bezas
Finter, Frederick, wounded in the elbow at Gulford courthouse
Anderson, Robert, enlisted for one year Jan 24, 1776, in Pennsylvania, Capt. H. Robinson in Regiment commanded by Anthony Wayne, 4th Regiment, discharged in Chester County, Pennsylvania
Golladay, Joseph, enlisted for one year in 1776, under command of Capt. Jonathan Clarke in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Newell in the Virginia Line on the Continental Establishment, battle of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth
Turner, Elias, enlisted for 18 months, Jan 1778, company commanded by Capt. John Steed, 8th Regiment commanded by Col. Bowman, battle of Monmouth; joined Captain Ragens company, marched to seige of Yorktown, served 3 months and was discharged
Henry, Nathaniel, Lieutenant in 1775 in 1st New York Regiment commanded by Col Vanshoick; wife is Polly Henry, daughter Cornelia, sickly person. Was in St. John, Quebec at Sandy Point on Lake Champlain, wounded at Fort Edward, Mohawk River in April 1779
Tanner, Jacob, widow Dorothy Tanner
Effinger, Jon Ignatious, Sgt., widow Barbara Cook Effinger. Barbara died Aug 15, 1855. children: Elizabeth Koiner, Mary Bender, Margaret Fletcher, Barbara A Bair; son, William Effinger died before his mother and left children.
Rhodes, Michael, died 1819, widow Anna Rhodes, sons John, Daniel, David, Abraham, Michael, daughters Anna Hockman, wife of Peter Hockman, Mary Crabill, wife of John Crabill.
Roots, Michael, prisoner of the United States, died Nov 16, 1842; children John, George, Abraham, Jacob, Michael, Eve Windel, Elizabeth Roots, Barbara Copp, Catherine Guyer
Snelling, John, 8th Virginia Regiment, husband of Elizabeth, enlisted in Feb 1776. Elizabeth remarried in 1781 after her husband was deceased
Bissant, Randolph, wife Catharine, enlisted in 1779, never returned to his family
Coffman, George, Private in company of Captain All, drafted at Woodstock in 1781, marched from Shenandoah County, under command of Lt. George Rinker, passed by way of Front Royal, Fredericksburg and then to Yorktown, and there transferred to Captain All's company under command of General George Washington, present at capture of Cornwallis, detached to guard and assisted in conducting the prisoners to Winchester. Widow Christina married George Coffman on the 20th day, 1784. George died 1833.
Jack, Thomas, entered Army under Captain Long. Jacob Fry made oath that Thomas Jack is son of Andrew Jack
Murphy, Pat, a sick soldier. Richard Branham paid 5 pounds for keeping him for 5 weeks, Nov 1783
