On February 1, 1806, Green Berry Samuels, later distinguished as Congressman and jurist, was born at Red Banks; and there, doubtless, his father, Isaac Samuels, who had been a soldier in the Revolution, died on September 30, 1819, aged 57. It seems evident that the Samuels home was just on the southeast side of the river, opposite or almost opposite the Pittman-Ripley house. For at least a part of the time that William Ripley lived at Red Banks, J.M. Allen was owner of the farmstead on the opposite side of the river. It is probably that the Allen farm had formerly belonged to Samuels.
