By the river west of New Market, on the Shenandoah side of the Fairfax line, is the old Newman homestead, for many years the residence of Walter Newman. Just across the river and the Line, is Rockingham, is the Moffett place, where Rev. Anderson Moffett and a number of his descendants lie buried.

Between Smith Creek and the Massanutten Mountain, near the Lee Highway, is another old Newman homestead. Only the outlines of the foundation of the huge old house may now (1927) be seen. It stood hard by the old road that led across the Valley and through the Massanutten Gap, and was for a long time a well known lodging place for sojourners on the highway. Some members of this Newman family are buried on the old Kagey place farther up the creek.

This old home site is now (1927) a part of Zirkledale Stock Farm, owned by Mr. Lewis H. Zirkle.
