Hotel Spengler, downtown Strasburg, Virginia
Hotel Spengler

At the corner of Main and Massanutten Street, Strasburg, is a large brick house of unusual interest. It was built, tradition says, in or about 1807. At any rate, it has been a silent witness of stirring events through many years. It stands just at the point where the Valley Pike turns at a right angle towards Winchester. Here the armies of Blue and Gray passed and repassed from '61 to '65. Here the stage coaches of olden days came to a standstill at regular intervals, for it was one of the favorite inns along the way, and the old reputation is well maintained by Mrs. Laura Spengler, the present hostess (1927). For artistic designs and solid workmanship, the old stairway and other woodwork in this house can hardly be surpassed.
