Orkney Springs Boy Meets Death In North Branch Of Shenandoah River



Irvin Lynn Barb, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delford Barb, of near Orkney Springs was drowned in the North Branch of the   Shenandoah   River  about  a  mile  south  of  Mount Jackson,  just above the Toll Gate bridge,  at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Young  Barb  has  been  swimming  in the river with some companions  when  he  met  his  death.   He  attempted to swim  across the river and back,  and went  down near the middle of the stream on the return trip.   He sank in water 12 feet deep.

Calls for help reached Mount Jackson and a group of boys hurried to the scene to aid in recovering the body.   It was found and brought to the survace by Graham Stoneburner after it had been in the water approximately 45 minutes.

The body will arrive at the home of Mrs. B. W. Showalter Monday afternoon.

The body was hurried to  Harrisonburg Memorial Hospital with  the  hope  that  the  youth  might  be resuscitated by means of a pumotor (sic), but he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Besides his parents, he is survived by several brothers and sisters. Funeral arrangements had not been completed last night.
