To the Democrats

Shenandoah County, Va.

     We, the undersigned, members respectively of each of the wings of the Democratic party of Shenandoah County, Virginia, believing that the Democratic party of Virginia in order to assure the casting of the electoral vote of the state of Virginia for HANCOCK & ENGLISH and that for assuring the certain defeat of the Republican party, should be united on one electoral ticket. Each wing of the prty to choose five electors, the 11th elector to be chosen by the National Democratic committee of the United States;

     Request, that all good democrats regardless of State issues meet at a mass meeting to be held at the Court House in Woodstock, Saturday, July 31st 1880 at 2 o'clock, P.M. and sign a call directed to the State executive committees, requesting the striking off of 6 electors from each ticket, and they the said State executive committee to request the National Democratic committee of the United States to name the 11th elector, and on the placing of said electoral ticket in the field, we the representatives and voters of both parties pledge it our hearty and unanimous support.

     We further request that we have no public speaking at the Court House on that day, and that the County Treasurer and County Clerk be present and register the names of all voters who favor this action, in order that said proceedings with the names of the signers attached may be published as an expression of the sentiments of the people of Shenandoah County. And we urge our sister counties to take similar action and show to the world that the Democrats of Virginia are united on National issues.

     The members of both parties have agreed upon the following letter, which will be presented for the signature of the Democratic voters of Shenandoah County, at the mass meeting to be held at the Court House in Woodstock, July 31st, 1880, said letter to be addressed to both the State Executive Committee in Virginia.

     In pursuance to the above call, we, the Democratic voters of Shenandoah County Virginia, in mass meeting assembled in Woodstock, July 31st, 1880, respectfully request the placing of an electoral ticket in the field, to be composed of five electors from each wing of the Democratic party in Virginia, the eleventh elector to be selected by the National Democratic Committee of the United States, in order that the Democrats of Virginia may cast a solid vote for eleven electors pledged to cast their votes for HANCOCK & ENGLISH.

     And for the accomplishment of the same, we respectfully ask that you will take such action as will lead to the withdrawal of six electors from your electoral ticket, leaving five electors pledged to the support of HANCOCK & ENGLISH, and that after such action, you request the National Democratic Committee to appoint on elector, who, with the five electors selected by the other wing, or the Democratic party, shall compose the eleven electors for Virginia for whom we will cast our votes.
