Herschel Carson "Ted" Pangle Herschel Carson "Ted" Pangle, 87, of Strasburg, VA passed away on January 9th, 2007, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. Ted was born June 6, 1921 in Strasburg, VA and was one of thirteen children born to James Arthur and Zelda Pangle. He attended Strasburg High School and played football for the H.S. team. As a young man, he had various jobs including driving a milk truck, farming, and driving for the quarry. Being drawn to law enforcement, he became employed by the State of VA as a law enforcement officer on May 1st, 1947 and remained employed as an Investigator for the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for 36 years, retiring in 1984. He was an incredible farmer, owning a 200 acre farm in Frederick County, VA and most recently a plentiful garden in Strasburg, VA which he tended through 2008. He loved to cook, bake and can goods from his garden and always had plenty to share. He truly enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors all his life. He took pleasure in morning coffee visits with friends and attending auctions. He cherished time spent with family, especially at Thanksgiving. He was a member of Strasburg United Methodist Church where he remained active. He was a member of the Winchester/Frederick Co. Conservation Club and former member of the Ruritan Club. He married Martha Hockman and they had three children -- two sons Gary C. Pangle, and John W. Pangle, both still residing in Strasburg, VA; and one daughter, Norma Jane Hamman who preceded his death in March 2007. He married his second wife Joan Trenary and together they have one daughter, Sherry Pangle Yost, who resides in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Surviving him are a sister Lorraine Bell of Front Royal, VA and a brother Roy Pangle of Strasburg, VA; seven grandchildren: Scott Pangle, Lori Flemming, Stacey Pangle, Pam Grandstaff, Todd Pangle, Wade Ritenour and Kevin Hamman; eight great grandchildren, Clyde Pangle, Jason Pangle, Nicolas Fleming, Anthony Ritenour, Samantha Ritenour, Scott Hamman, Dylan Hamman and Jake Hamman; and one great-great grandchild Jayden Pangle. Pallbearers will be: Nathan Jenkins, Frank Greene, William Sorokin, Harris Moore, Donnie Sheetz and Donivan Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be: Scott Pangle, Todd Pangle, Wade Ritenour, Kevin Hamman, Clyde Pangle and Jason Pangle. The family received friends on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Stover Funeral Home in Strasburg. A church service will be held at Strasburg UMC on Tuesday 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Lebanon Church Cemetery. Immediately following the graveside service a lunch will be served at Strasburg UMC.
