Death of Mrs. Mattie Whitehead

A telegram, notifying the family of Mr. J. E. Hopkins of the serious illness of his daughter Mattie Alice Whitehead, was received Jan. 1st, and subsequent mail informed them of her death at that date at her husband's home near Lebanon, Tenn. Her mother Mrs. J. E. Hopkins had left this vicinity on Dec. 31st to attend her in her sickness, but failed to reach her before her demise, which was more sudden than her family apprehended. She after graduating from the teachers' Peabody Institute at Nashville, Tenn., was principal of a young ladies' school in Middleburg, Loudoun county. She also taught in several of the public schools of Shenandoah, and subsequently to her marriage, June 9, 1896, to Prof. J. C. Whitehead, taught with her husband in that State.

She became a member of the Methodist church of New Market, Va., under the pastorate of Rev. Thomas Briley, and died in the Christian faith, in the 31st year of her age, leaving three small children, aged respectively six, four, and two years, a devoted husband, loving parents and sisters who with a host of friends deplore the untimely loss of a noble woman.

The funeral services were held at her late home, and were conducted by a member of the faculty of the Columbia University, Kentucky. She was interred in the family burying ground of her husband's people at Greenwood, Tenn., by the side of her infant son who died in August, 1903.

Thus in the meridian of her life, far away from the loved ones of her Virginia home, she sleeps the late unbroken sleep. No one was more beloved or more deeply lamented by the neighbors and friends of her adopted home.
