From the Shenandoah Valley newspaper, Sept., 1876 SILVIOUS. -- Fell asleep in Jesus, near Rader Church, Rockingham County, VA. on the 1st day of September, 1876, Mrs. Catharine Silvious; aged about 106 years. The subject of this notice was born (it is supposed) in the year 1770 in the state of Pennsylvania. She was a daughter of Mr. John Wilhelm, dec'd of Pennsylvania. Born of Christian parents, she was in her infancy initiated into the family of God, through the ordinance of Holy Baptism; and at a more mature age, after having been regularly instructed in the doctrines and principles of our holy religion, she entered into full communion with the Evan. Luth. Church through the ancient, solemn Rite of Confirmation. In her youthful days she came to the state of Virginia and made her home with a family, by the name of Pence. She entered in to holy matrimony with Mr. Abram Brock, by whom she became the mother of three sons. After his death, she was married to Mr. John Fifer, by whom she had one daughter, and after his death, she was united in holy wedlock with Mr. Abram Silvious, by which marriage she became the mother of one son. During her long life, she was sick but very little, and she was a very active and industrious person. She supported herself by laboring with her own hands. She was actively working within seven days of her death. She was very active on her feet. She lived about 1 mile from the Church, but notwithstanding, she was a regular attendant there. Her place was seldom found vacant. About 12 days previous to her death, she assembled with the congregation in the Church to attend the divine services both Saturday and Sunday, walking to and from from her residence to the Church. Thus, as we have every reason to hope another mother in Israel, old and full of years, is gone, from the Church militant, to enjoy the glorious blessings of the Church triumphant. J.S.B. |
