The Death of Mrs. Maphis
Annie Elizabeth Maphis died at her home at Hawkinstown, Va., September 28, 1907. Having suffered a stroke of paralysis two years ago, she became an invalid and was in declining health. Six weeks previous to her death she sustained a fall from which she never recovered. During the last few weeks of her life she endured great suffering, and was only relieved when death peacefully and quietly claimed her--surrounded by her family--on the evening of September 28. Mrs. Maphis nee Miss Annie Elizabeth Cline, was born June 26, 1820, and was from infancy a baptized member of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran church. In 1842, she and her husband, to be, Mr. Geo. Maphis were confirmed on the same day in Zion church by Rev. Dr. Rude, and were married in 1843 by the same pastor. A married life of 64 years was given these Christian people, and from this union spring seven children, three of whom (sons) preceded her in death. Mr. and Mrs. Maphis were widely known as perhaps the oldest couple living in Shenandoah county. They transferred their membership to Mount Calvary Lutheran church, Mt. Jackson, Va., and for more than a quarter of a century they have been active workers. She was the last member of a large family, a sister of Rev. J. P. Cline, deceased, who was pastor of the Mt. Jackson pastorate for many years. She was a staunch Lutheran who loved her church and its pure teachings and was, until feebleness prevented, a regular attendant at public worship. The husband, who is in his eighty-ninth year, together with the family of one daughter and three sons have the prayers and sympathy of the congregation and many friends in these, their dark hours. We mourn her death, yet we give thanks for her long and fiathful life in the Mater's kingdom. In the absence of the pastor, Rev. W. J. D. Scherer, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran church, Woodstock, Va., read the beautiful burial service and her body was interred Sept. 30. M. Luther Canup |
