William Johnson Combs was born 05 Sep 1848, probably in Buchanan Co., Va., the son of Fielding Combs and Sarah Smith. On 27 Feb 1877 in Russell Co., Va., he married Ellen Catherine Williams, the daughter of Shadrick Williams and Nancy Leece. Ellen was born in Russell Co., Va. on 27 Mar 1848. William and Ellen had 8 children as follows: 1) Mary Jane Combs, b: 11 Aug 1878. 2) Shadrick Linkous Combs, b: 19 Apr 1880. 3) John Larkin Combs, b: 27 Aug 1882. 4) Samuel Loran Combs, b: 22 May 1884. 5) Sarah Ellen Combs, b: 08 Apr 1886. 6) Bettie Bethel Combs, b: 11 Feb 1888. 7) Cleopus Combs, b: 13 Sep 1891. 8) James Johnson Combs, b: 31 May 1894.
