Thomas Jefferson Whetsell (Burdine) was born 27 Oct 1849, the son of ? Burdine & Frances Whetsell. His father died before the 1850 census, and his mother remarried to Alfred M. Williams on 16 Jul 1855. Frances Whetsell was the daughter of Samuel & Susan Whetsell. Thomas' mother, Frances then died sometime prior to August 1860, as Alfred Williams remarried on 08 Aug 1860 to Margaret M. Spurgeon. In the 1860 census Thomas was living in the household of Stephen & Sarah Williams. Thomas was then apparently adopted by some Whetsells, probably relatives of his mother and raised as a Whetsell. He married in 1874 to Susan Ella Davis the daughter of Calhoun & Eliza Davis. Thomas & Susan had six children: 1) James A., b. 1875; 2) Floyd Calhoun, b. 08 Jan 1880; 3) Eliza Jane Katherine, b. 1883; 4) Wythe P., b. 1885; 5) Walter Thomas, b. 1887; and 6) Bessie Carter, b. 1893. Thomas died 06 Nov 1927 and Susan 17 Apr 1932. Both are buried in Carterton in Russell Co., Va. This photo was taken in 1926 between the two houses they owned in Carterton, Va.
