Joel Ramsey was born in Russell Co, Va. on 22 Feb 1833, the son of William Ramsey and Susannah Bush. On 10 Jan 1855 in Russell Co., he married Margaret Kiser, the daughter of John Kiser & Nancy Long. Margaret was born on 28 Dec 1828 in Russell Co. Joel & Margaret had the following children: Sylvester, Sebastian, Mary Jane, Nancy C., James O., Cornelius, Orie and Mariah Ramsey. Joel Ramsey died 25 Aug 1909.
