Elbert & Alice "Honaker" Dye

Elbert Dye was born about 1877 in Russell County, Virginia, the son of Henderson Dye and Cynthia "Honaker" Ray. Cynthia's first husband, Elias Ray, had been killed in action at the battle of Kernstown 23 Mar 1862. On 16 Feb 1898 Elbert married Alice Mary Honaker, the daughter of Lilburn Honaker and Nancy Jane Ray. Alice was born 06 Jun 1883 in Russell County. Elbert and Alice had 8 children: 1) Dellie born 1900, died of pnuemonia in 1918; 2) Lonnie born about 1902, died young; 3) Charlie born 1904, died 27 Apr 1924 while on a hunting trip near Finney, Va. He and two friends, one by the name of Ball and another, a son of Oscar Honaker, had decided to spend the night in an abandoned house that they had come upon. At the same time, lawmen were searching for Ferd Honaker, another son of Oscar Honaker, who had escaped after being sentenced to ten years in prison for robbery and was believed to have been invovled in the killing of a policeman in Cincinnati, Ohio. The lawmen had received information that Ferd Honaker may be staying the night in the abandonded house and made a raid on it in an attempt to apprehend who they believed to be Ferd Honaker. In the ensuing confusion, and with little light, the lawmen opened fire on the occupants killing Charlie Dye & the Ball man and wounding the Honaker man. Ferd Honaker was not in the building at the time of the raid.; 4) Myrtle born 1906, married first Albert Sawyers and second, Melvin Wood; 5) Leonard born 15 Apr 1909, married Nannie Ruth Fuller; 6) Ollie born 25 Feb 1911, married William Wayne Jones; 7) Jettie Thelma Dye born 08 Apr 1913, married Nathan Edward Honaker a son of Oscar Honaker; and 8) Gertie born 11 Jun 1917, married first Ferd E. Miller and second Roscoe Zimmerman. Elbert died 15 Aug 1947 and Alice 03 Feb 1964. Both are buried along with their sons Dellie and Charlie in Whitt Cemetery on Big A Mtn., near Honaker, Va.
