Edward Dolan Gray was born in Russell County on 22 Jun 1842, the son of Nelson Gray and Nancy Jessee. On 10 May 1861 he enlisted in Co. C, 37th Va. Inf. at Lebanon as a Corporal. He served throughout the Civil War and was captured at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on 12 May 1864. He was then sent to Fort Delaware as a prisoner of war and was released on his oath on 20 Jun 1865. On 23 Nov 1871 He married Elizabeth Jessee, the daughter of Archer and Christina Jessee. Edward and Elizabeth had eight children: Walter, Will, Maude, Ethel, Paul, Fred, Nelson and Kate.
