Charles Kelly was born abt. 1834 in Russell County, Virginia, s/o William Kelly & Rebecca Nash. About 1860 he married Martha Gilmer, d/o Samuel E. Gilmer & Anna Peery. On 05 Aug 1862 he enlisted as a private in Co. A, 16th VA Cavalry at Lebanon, VA. From Feb - Nov 1863 he wrote several letters home from various locations which have been preserved. He died probably in Aug or Sep, 1864 in the area of Winchester, VA and is buried in the Stonewall Cem. a part of Mt. Hebron Cem. at Winchester.
