Patrick Henry Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, to all to whom the presents shall come, greeting: Know ye that by virtue of part of a certificate in right of settlement given by the commissioners for adjusting the Titles to unpatented lands in the district of Washington & Montgomery & in consideration of the ancient composition of one pound sterling paid by John Thompson into the treasury of this Commonwealth there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto the said John Thompson a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred and ninety six acres by survey bearing date the nineteenth day of March one thousand seven hundred and eighty three lying & being in the County of Washington on the South side of Thompsons Creek the waters of Clinch River and is bounded as followeth to wit, Beginning at a Large white oak and sugar tree on the top of a stoney hill on the south side of said creek and running thence south fifty five degrees east one hundred and two poles to two ashes on the side of a steep hill south eighty two degrees east ninety nines poles crossing a spring branch to two poplars opposite the head of a hollow north fifty eight degrees east seventy four poles to a white oak on the side of a spur near a branch north seventy eight degrees east forty six poles to a hickory opposite the head of a hollow north forty seven degrees east thirty nine poles to a white oak on the side of a brushy hill north fifteen degrees west forty poles to a red bud and white oak saplings on the top of said hill north fifty one degrees west ninety poles to a white oak and beech on the north side of a steep stoney hill south sixty seven degrees west two hundred and fifty nine poles along side said hill to the Beginning with its appurtenances; to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its apputenances to the said John Thompson and his heirs forever. In witness whereof the said Patrick Henry Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, hath hereunto set his hand, and caused the lesser seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond, on the twenty second day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty five and of the Commonwealth the ninth.
