Frederick Fraley’s Son Chased by Indians

By Emory L. Hamilton

From the unpublished manuscript, Indian Atrocities Along the Clinch, Powell and Holston Rivers, page 132.

Colonel Arthur Campbell, wrote to Governor Patrick Henry, on June 7, 1785, saying:

Since my last (letter) the Indians chased a son of Mr. Friley’s, on Clinch, and ran him until within site of his father’s house. (Calendar Virginia State Papers, Vol. IV, page 23)

Frederick Fraley settled in upper Castlewood, in Russell Co., VA, in the year 1769, being an emigrant from Rowan Co., NC. The name is variantly spelled Fraley, Friley, in the records, and being a German by birth it is sometimes spelled Froelich. The descendants of Frederick Fraley today spell the name "Fraley".

At the time his son was chased by the Indians, he was living in Lower Castlewood, at Moore’s Fort, which property he had bought from Captain John Snoddy, about 1780, when Snoddy left the Clinch for settlement in Kentucky. Just which, of several sons of Mr. Fraley was chased is unknown. James, who was perhaps the oldest son was one of the most noted Indian Spys of the area, and one contemporary who served with him, says he was chosen, "because of his dexterous use of the rifle."
