Know all men by these presents that I Nancy COWAN of the county of Russell and state of Virginia for and in consideration of the natural love and affections which I have and bear for my daughter Nancy HOWARD of said county and also for the further consideration of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid by her, have given, granted, sold and confirmed, and by these presents do give, grant, sell and confirm unto her the said Nancy Howard one Negro boy named Samuel now about eight years old to the sole use and benefit of her the said Nancy Howard and her heirs forever. But I reserve to myself the use and possession of said slave during my life the same manner as if this conveyance had never been made.
Witness my hand and seal this 8th day of June 1827.

This deed of gift from Nancy Cowan to Nancy Howard was acknowledged on the 8th day of June 1827 in the clerk's office of Russell county before me by the said Nancy Cowan to be her act and deed and admitted to record.
