She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Davis "Billy" Caldwell as well as four brothers. She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and James Patrick, Connie Lovern, Barbara and Ronnie Shelton, all of Christiansburg, Vickie Caldwell and Milton Simpkins of Pilot, Bonnie and Neal Seamen of Christiansburg; two sons and daughter-in-law, William Jeffery Caldwell, Russell Wayne and Dana Caldwell, all of Radford; two sisters, Ellen Hartman of Pearisburg, Carol Thorn of Rich Creek; two brothers, Buck Quesenberry of Rich Creek, Ricky Quesenberry of Pembroke; eleven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, August 15, 2004 at 2:00 pm in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He attended Radford City Public School and Christiansburg Institute. He was a former employee of Volvo White Motor Corporation. Gunn, also preceded him in death. Surviving are a loving friend and companion, Peggy Porter of Pulaski; two nieces, Betty McFarland and Tina Fenske, both of Greenwood, Ind. Edna Lorilla Callahan, age 71 was lifted on the wings of angels to depart this life surrounded with love by her family as she departed for Heavens gate on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006. She no longer suffers from her illness and left with any pain resting peacefully. She was a dedicated life member of the First Baptist Church, Magazine Street, Pulaski, Va. Upon graduating from Christiansburg Institute, she moved to Richmond, Va. to pursue a modeling career for top clothing stores, and worked for Schmidt and Wilson Realitor. She loved ballroom dancing and entertaining. She later developed a passion for working and loving elderly people by becoming a nurse. She extended her services and career while performing private duty assignments. She worked in numerous nursing homes until retiring. In 1996, she moved to Texas (due to her illness) to reside with her daughter until her death. Edna (Toots) was born on May 30, 1934 in Pulaski, Va. Preceded in death by mother Edna Price Callahan Patterson, and father Lorenzo Callahan, and step father John Patterson, Jr.; sisters Malinda Slaughter, Cynthia Marchbanks, Glory Callahan; brothers Pernell Callahan, Charles Callahan, and Ray Hamilton; brother-in-law Richard Slaughter. She is survived by one daughter Debra C. (Hurbert) Harper; grandchildren Dominique (Cherlanda) Harper, and Domenica Harper and two great grand-children, Jeremy Washington and Demetrius Harper, all of Austin Texas; loving companion of fifty years Willie (Bubba) M. Johnson of Richmond, Va.; sisters Felecia (William) Matthews, Austin, Texas, Nancy Bell, Greensboro, N.C., Katherine Brown, Winston Salem, N.C.; sister-in-law Captoria Callahan of Pulaski; brother Edward (Carolyn) Callahan, Washington, D.C, Leon (Virginia) Callahan, Winston-Salem, N.C.; nieces Donna (Ralph) Riggs, Baltimore, Md. A Virginia Tech alumni, he was the president and owner of Fort Chiswell Construction from 1966 to 1995. He was a partner of the Draper Valley Golf Club. Dallas was a member of the Draper Valley Presbyterian Church. He was a gracious and loving husband and father who is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Hill Carico; five children, Thesa Spraker, Tijuana Odum, Duane Carico of Max Meadows, Dallas Carico of South Carolina and Cara Lyles of Maryland; nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, one great grandchild and two step-great-grandchildren. DRAPER Leo Garland Cecil, 75, went home to be with the Lord and Savior on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005 at his home in Draper. Born July 23, 1930 in Pulaski County he was the son of the late Eugene Glendy Cecil and Virginia Dexter Cecil. Leo was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved life and was loved by all that knew him. He retired from Burlington Industries with 38 years of service and followed his passion of collecting antiques for many years. Upon his retirement, Leo opened Leos Antiques in Draper and never met a stranger. We give him this final Thank You for all the love, hope and memories he gave us and others. Leo is survived by his wife of 52 wonderful years, Markeatter Houck Cecil and would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on Sept. 24th. Surviving children and grandchildren are one son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Patti Cecil of Lexington, KY; daughter, Karen Cecil of Dublin; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Ron Matthews of Pulaski; two beautiful granddaughters, Erin and Laura Cecil of Lexington, KY; brothers, Curtis Cecil of Fairhaven, Mass. and brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Pauline Cecil of Hiwassee. Also surviving are many special relatives, friends and a very loving cat Purdy. Leo attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church and Worship Center for over 50 years. He was a retired federal government employee, having been a quality control inspector and supervisor at Radford Arm Ammunition Plant from the mid-1940's until in retirement in the early 1970's. Jeep served his country during World War II as an amphibious truck (duck) driver, participating in the South Pacific campaigns and beach landings at Pelilu, Gaudalcanal and Okinawa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Linkous Chambers, and his son Michael Sidney Chambers' wife, Susie, as well as Oliver's parents, several sisters (Audrey Bain, Nancy Charlton, Hester Akers, Gladys Ennis, Polly Jones and Dottie Chambers) and three brothers, Otis, EB and Donald. He is survived by three sisters, Jane Barden, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Peggy Miller, Georgetown, Va. and Joan Hall, Jefferson, N.C., his nephew and care giver and wife, Jeff and Susan Bain, Pulaski, Va., and Betty's nephew and wife, Billy and Donna Wirt and daughter Kierra. as Chief of Police. Jack had over 35 years of law enforcement.
After retirement, Jack enjoyed so much serving the children of
Snowville, Va. (Pulaski County) where he drove a school bus for
several years. Jack and Betty June moved to Seven Lakes in 2001.

TAZEWELL Joe Grear Mose Christian, 83, of Tazewell, VA, died Wednesday, February 9, 2005 in a local hospital. He was born October 13, 1921 in Squire, West Virginia and was the son of the late James Arthur and Rose Belle (Bailey) Christian. He was a grandson of James Daniel and Mary Elizabeth (Harrison) Christian and Will Harvey and Nancy Jane (Hagerman) Bailey. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Virginia Madge (Sheppard) Christian and by two sisters, Hattie Johnson and Juanita Hansen. Mr. Christian graduated from Iaeger High School in 1939, played minor league baseball, and served six years in the Navy where he rose to the rank of Chief Bosuns Mate. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters on the USS Texas, the Cory, and the Hudson. He also served on the USS Calypso, an escort ship for President Roosevelts yacht. After the war, Mr. Christian attended Concord College then worked for Martin Marietta Corporation in Baltimore and Orlando. After retirement he lived in Orange Park, Florida and Rocky Gap, Virginia. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Candace and Robert Richards of San Diego, CA and Rose Ann and Walter Jenny of Edmond, OK; two granddaughters and spouse, Megan Richards of San Diego, CA and Meredith Richards and Michael Whittaker of San Diego, CA; a great grandson, Russell Whittaker of San Diego, CA; two nieces and spouses, Paige and Arthur Barthlow of Florida, and T.J. and Richard Higgenbotham of Florida; and several great-nieces and nephews. PULASKI Gerald Vance Clark, 77, of Pulaski, died on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at his home after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was born on Jan. 16, 1929 in Bland, Va. and graduated from Bland High School. He then served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Clark was predeceased by a wife, Doris Tissie Clark, his parents, Charles Marvin and Bonnie Phillippi Clark, three sisters, Inez Quillen, Geneva Bruce and Patsy Clark and by a brother, Donald Clark. Mr. Clark retired as laboratory manager at Pulaski Community Hospital after 35 years of service. He received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Board of the American Medical Technologists and was a member and past President of the Virginia State Society of American Medical Technologists. An avid Boy Scout as a youth, he became Scoutmaster of Troop 345 in Pulaski, earning Scoutings highest honor, the Silver Beaver Award for his years of dedicated service. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees, the Administrative Board, the Finance and Maintenance Committees, and in many other capacities. His public service included appointments to the Board of Directors at the Randolph House, the Town of Pulaski Board of Zoning Appeals, and the Board of the Free Clinic of Pulaski County. She was preceded in death by a sister, Emily Eversole Elliott and a brother, Charles William Eversole. She was a member of the Anderson Memorial Presbyterian Church and was for many years an employee of the former McCroy's Store in downtown Pulaski. Mrs. Clark is survived by her husband of 49 years, Charles Donald Clark of Pulaski; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Phillip Scarbery of Pulaski County; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Trina Clark of Dublin; a grandson, James Charles Scarbery; two step-grandchildren, Tina and Shawn Scarberry; a sister, Yvonne Phillippi of Wytheville; a nephew, David Phillippi; two nieces, Cindy Elliott and Barbara Witherspoon; and a great nephew, Richard Witherspoon. Paul Andrew Clark, 81 of Pulaski, a Hero of the Faith who was faithful to his Lord for 56 years and in his service as a Pastor for most of those years, went for his crowning Glory on May 19, 2006 at Duke Medical Center. He was surrounded by his wife and children as he was escorted into heaven by a host of heavenly angels. He was born in Bland County, Va. on Aug. 15, 1924 the son of the late Pearly Meek Clark and Della Myers Clark. He was a World War II Army Veteran. Rev. Clark was blessed to have Mary Aileen DeHart Clark as his wife for 58 years, they were given five daughters, Brenda Hiscott and husband Donald of Pinehurst, N.C., Dee Brubaker and husband Mike of Roanoke, Karen Burns and husband Jeff of Whitesburg, Ky., Paula Kellstrom and husband Rev. J. M of Philadelphia and Teresa Henley and husband Ron of Radford; two sons, Rev. D.M. Clark and wife Debbie of Blacksburg and Mark Clark of Pulaski; two sisters, Ola Morehead of Bland and Ila French of Dublin; one brother, Braddie Clark of Richmond; 14 grandchildren, Michelle Jordon, Chantel Mayhann, Dawn Moser, Paige Millis, Justin Brubaker, Seth Brubaker, Shannon Hogg, Jed Clark, Tiffany Anderson, Jason Clark, Jonathan Clark, Aaron Clark Collins, Jordan Clark and Deenae Henley, and 17 great-grandchildren. He was born in Autinville, Va., on March 10, 1926 and was the son of the late Floyd L. Coake and Nancy Hill Coake. Mr. Coake spent his whole life devoted to his family. He preached and pastored churches for 50 years. He was a member of the Bobwhite Blvd. Church of God, Pulaski. He was a retired employee of RAAP, Radford, with 40 years of service. Surviving are his wife Ella Mae Coake of Dublin; daughters and sons-in-Law Brenda Bouschard Hughes and Robert Hughts of Las Vegas, NV and Beverly and Robert Rowland of Atlanta, GA; and son Stacy Coake of Nashville, TN. PULASKI - Landon Jay Collins, age 83 of Pulaski, died Wednesday September 15, 2004 at Pulaski Community Hospital. Born April 19, 1921 in Bristol, TN, he was the son of the late Leana Mahady Collins and Jessie Wiley Collins. Jay was a veteran of W.W. II having served in the United States Army in the 512th Engineer Light Pontoon Company which assisted in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland Central Europe invasions where he received 4 Bronze Stars. He was scheduled to attend the 43rd reunion with the 512 this weekend in Frankfort, KY. He was an active member of the Memorial Baptist Church, and retired as an employee of Radford Army Ammunition Plant where he served in the Quality Control Department. He was a proud member of the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #239 A.F.&A.M., a member of the Pulaski Royal Arch Chapter, a member of the Scottish Rite Shriners as a 32nd degree Mason, a founding member of the Kazim Shrine Characters as the first kangaroo, a member of the Pulaski Elks Lodge #1067, a life member of the Hillsville Grover King V.F.W. Post 1115, a member of the American Legion Post #7, a member of the Eastern Star where he proudly served in most all areas including Past Patron and Delegate to many states representing the Eastern Star of Virginia. Jay moved to Pulaski in 1949 from Richmond, Va. and was employed with RAAP. Early retirement allowed him to began a business venture by organizing and operating the Downtown Exxon, which he managed with utmost care serving the citizens of Pulaski. He later built Jays Mobil Station on Bob White Blvd., which he again operated for many years. Unable to let himself be idle, he remained active in life by working part-time for the former Pulaski Motor Company, Hudson Automotive Group and then for the Duncan Automotive Group. He and his wife Fannie owned the Willow Apartments in Pulaski where they both found pleasure in keeping up a beautiful appearance. His was extremely proud to be an active part-time employee of Seagle Funeral Home, where he found pleasure in assisting and comforting his many friends of Pulaski County. Jays mother died at an early age and he was raised by his grandparents, Sam and Sue Ellen Mahady. In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by 4 foster sisters, 1 foster brother, 4 half sisters, and 2 half brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Fannie Cline Collins of Pulaski; a sister-in-law, Willa Mae Cline of Pulaski; a special niece, Judy McNutt Thompson of Knoxville, TN; a special nephew, Sam McNutt and his wife Alice of Lexington, S.C.; a nephew, Denver Cline of Anderson, S.C., a niece Connie Tate and her husband David of Clearwater, FL; and a nephew Alvin Collins of Richmond, Va. Also survived by many great nieces and great nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday September 18, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. David Lones officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens where the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge will conduct graveside rites. The Masons will serve as active pallbearers, and the Shriners, Elks, and American Legion members will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visiting will be anytime Friday after 3 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. The Order of the Eastern Star will conduct an evening memorial service at the funeral home at 8 p.m., and the public is invited. Flowers will be accepted, bur for those who wish, memorials may be made in the memory of Jay, to any Shriners Childrens Hospital, or to the Memorial Baptist Church New Building Fund. Friends are welcome to a celebration of Jays life in the fellowship hall of the Memorial Baptist Church immediately following the graveside committal. RADFORD - Alice Fowlkes Cook, 95, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2005 at her home in Radford. She was born on October 3, 1910 in Danville, the daughter of the late Henry Lee and Rosa Glass Fowlkes. The family moved to South Hill when Alice was 10. She was the oldest of five children. She attended Hamilton College in Lexington, KY and Smithdeal-Massey Business School in Richmond. She married the late W. Henry Cook on May 23, 1936 whom she worked alongside in his law practice until shortly before his death on July 16, 1974. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in South Hill until 1994 when she moved to Radford to be close to her family and became a member of the First Baptist Church in Radford. Her many hobbies include needlepoint, playing bridge and reading. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Lawrence Fowlkes, a sister, Rosalee Sharp, and a great-grandson, Joshua Dudding. Survivors include a son, Dr. William Cook of Radford; two granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nora Wise and Barbara Copley, both of Richmond. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 8, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Radford with Dr. Paul Lane officiating. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Oakwood Cemetery in South Hill with Rev. Kevin Rosenfeld officiating. CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS Carrie Campbell Cook, 95, of Corpus Christi, Texas passed away on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004. She was born on Aug. 15, 1909 to Lura Myrtle and George Waburn Campbell in Cleveland, Va. (one of 11 children). Carrie was married to Thurman T. Cook on June 4, 1927 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lebanon Methodist Parsonage in Lebanon, Va. She worked from her home as a beautician for a number of years, at Jefferson Mills for 15 years, and as a homemaker. She and Thurman were founding members for Memorial Baptist Church in Pulaski where they spent a great deal of their time in prayer and community service through the church. Carrie was a generous woman with her time and talents and crocheted many blankets and slippers for the nursing home in Pulaski. She also made blankets, caps, sweaters, and booties in pink and blue for the babies at Pulaski Hospital. She was an excellent cook and loved to can food from the gardens which she and Thurman planted every year. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thurman T. Cook, son Joseph Campbell Cook, her parents, and all of her brothers and sisters. Carrie is survived by her children Linda Hanson of Denver, Col., Bertie Talbert of Corpus Christi, Texas and John Esten (Mary Alice) Cook of Salem, Va. Grandchildren Marc and Eric Hanson, Jennifer Sherman, Wanda and Daryl Cook, Gary Cook, Tim Talbert and Betty Silvar. Great-grandchildren Krista Sherman, Melissa Robinson, Christopher and Stephen Cook, Jenny and Johnathan McLaughlin, and Cindy and Kim Cook. Visitation will be 6 8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 22 at Stevens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23 at Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. J. Born June 30, 1948 in Pulaski, she is the daughter of James Albert Chaffin of Pulaski and the late Elizabeth Schrader Chaffin. PULASKI Simon Kenton (Pete) Covey, 74, of 714 Newbern Road, Pulaski stepped into the presence of the Lord on Oct. 5, 2004. He will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched through the many happy years of his life on this earth. He was born in Max Creek on Oct. 6, 1929 and he was the son of the late Burley R. Covey and Ila Cox Covey. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Evalene Covey and Ruth Lunsford and by a brother, Voyce David Covey and by a granddaughter, Christy Sue Landreth Pampley. He was a faithful employee of Jefferson Mills for 43 years and he was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Pulaski and he was a well known face in the Pulaski community. His wife and daughters will greatly miss his presence in their lives. Surviving are: his wife, Darlene Via Covey, Pulaski; daughters, Cynthia Covey Carter and husband Robert J. Mrs. Cox worked in her post retirement years with Dr. James Hylton. Mrs. Cox had a green thumb and was an avid gardner and she appreciated a well-mown lawn. She spent many happy hours cleaning and grooming the grounds around her home of 52 years. Mrs. Cox and her husband Jeff enjoyed fishing and entertaining friends. She was a member of the Newbern Methodist Church and was the Treasurer and Communion Steward. Mrs. Cox was a faithful worker at the Newbern Fall Festival and devoted her fall season to the event. The family will receive friends Thursday Dec. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Home of Pulaski. Funeral services will take place Friday, Dec. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Newbern Methodist Church. Joan attended public school in Gloucester, Va. and later finished high school in Pulaski, Va. Joan and Robert (Bobby) Cox were married on Oct. 16, 1982 in Kingsport, Tenn. While traveling with Bobby on May 9, 2006 in Columbus, Ohio the angels came to take Joan home. Joan is survived by her husband Robert (Bobby) of the home. Three children, daughter Ruby Lemon of Kingsport, son Robert (Robbie) Cox of Kingsport and daughter Rebekah Marshall of Chattanooga, Tenn. Her birth mother, Joan Garner of New Haven, Ct., two sisters, Dorothy Johnson, Pulaski and Catherine Jones of Pulaski. Two brothers Douglas Garner of New Haven, Ct., and Charles Garner, Metro Area, D.C. Nine grandchildren, and a host of friends and relatives. The family will receive friends at Shiloh Baptist Church, East Sevier Ave., Kingsport, Tenn. on May 15 from 12 noon until 1 p.m. with the funeral immediately following. Thelma Repass Crowell, 101, of Pulaski died Wednesday, July 2, 2003 in the Pulaski Health Care Center. She was born in Wythe County on April 3, 1902 and was the daughter of the late Orval R. Repass and Cecile Felty Repass. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Ohmer O. Crowell. She drove a horse and buggy to Pulaski High School during the First World War. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski since 1923 where she was active in the choir, altar guild and teaching and leading music for Sunday School. She was an active member in Trinitys Women of the ELCA circle meetings until recently. She was a member of the Pulaski Womans Club, the Music Club, the Garden Club and she also belonged to the Draper Homemakers Club. Surviving are: her sons and daughters-in-law, Ohmer Crowell, Jr. and Pat Crowell, Columbus, Ohio, Douglas and Melodean Crowell, Pulaski; daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Carlton Tester, Lynchburg; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. Al served in the Navy during World War II and was a lifetime member of the Pulaski VFW Post 1184 and was an Honor guard. He was and ironworker for 45 years and a member of the Roanoke Union 697. Surviving are his loving wife, Helen Stout Cruff, Dublin; grandson, Brian L. Cruff, Jersey City, N.J.; step-daughter, Gwen S.
